6 Cheapest Payment Gateways: The Best Way To Save in 2026

There is no universally cheapest payment gateway in 2026. The lowest-cost choice depends on where you sell, your monthly volume, average transaction size, card mix, and whether you need POS software, invoicing, subscriptions, ACH, fraud tools, or hardware.

For many growing U.S. merchants, Helcim is the strongest overall cost candidate because it combines interchange-plus pricing with no monthly account fee. Square and SumUp are often better for low-volume, in-person sales; Stax can become cheaper at higher volume; Stripe is the flexible online choice; and PayPal can be worth the cost when customers expect PayPal, Venmo, or Pay Later.

Those recommendations are based on published U.S. pricing available in 2026. Rates, eligibility, product fees, and contract terms can change, so calculate your effective cost before switching.

Quick comparison

Provider Best for Published pricing signal Pricing model Main limitation
Helcim Growing businesses processing online and in person Interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ in person; interchange + 0.50% + 25¢ online/keyed for $0–$50,000 monthly card volume Interchange-plus Actual cost varies with card mix, volume, and transaction channel
Square Low-volume in-person sellers 2.6% + 15¢ in person; 3.3% + 30¢ online on the cited calculator Blended pricing Flat-rate fees can become expensive as volume rises
Stripe Online businesses, SaaS, and developers 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic online cards Blended pricing, with custom options Not usually the lowest raw card rate at scale
Stax Higher-volume merchants Starts at $99 per month, plus interchange and 8¢ card-present or 15¢ card-not-present Subscription Monthly fee and agreement terms may not suit low or unpredictable volume
PayPal Businesses whose customers use digital wallets Product- and payment-method-specific pricing Blended and product-specific No single universal PayPal rate
SumUp Simple mobile and in-person payments 2.6% + 10¢ on its U.S. POS pricing page Blended pricing Less suitable for complex online or recurring-payment needs

“Payment gateway” is commonly used as shorthand for these services, but the products are not identical. A gateway transmits payment information and authorization requests. A processor routes transactions, handles settlement, and funds the merchant. A merchant account receives card proceeds. Square, Stripe, PayPal, and similar aggregators generally bundle several of these functions, while traditional merchant-account arrangements may offer more negotiable pricing alongside underwriting, contracts, minimums, or statement fees.

#1 Best Overall
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

What makes a payment gateway cheap?

The advertised percentage is only one part of the cost. Compare providers using:

  • Published rate: The advertised percentage and fixed transaction fee.
  • Effective rate: All payment-related fees divided by gross processed volume.
  • Total annual cost: Processing, subscriptions, hardware, ACH, chargebacks, refunds, currency conversion, payout fees, and add-ons.
  • Contribution margin: A provider with a higher processing rate may still be economically better if its checkout, authorization, failed-payment recovery, or software reduces other costs or increases completed sales. Do not assume those benefits without measuring them.

Three pricing models appear repeatedly:

  • Blended pricing combines network costs and the provider’s markup into one rate, such as a percentage plus a fixed fee.
  • Interchange-plus pricing passes through the card network and issuing bank’s underlying interchange cost and adds the processor’s markup.
  • Subscription pricing charges a monthly platform fee while passing through interchange and adding a fixed transaction fee.

Interchange-plus is not automatically cheapest. It becomes more attractive when volume, average ticket, card mix, and channel justify it. Likewise, a subscription model only wins when the savings on transaction markups exceed the monthly charge.

1. Helcim: the strongest low-cost overall candidate

Best for: Small and midsize U.S. businesses that want transparent pricing for online and in-person payments without a monthly account fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to Helcim’s pricing page, the service lists no account monthly fees, minimums, software fees, statement fees, leases, contracts, termination fees, or cancellation fees. For U.S. and Canadian merchants, it publishes interchange-plus pricing. At $0–$50,000 in monthly credit-card volume, the listed markup is:

  • In person: interchange + 0.40% + 8¢.
  • Keyed and online: interchange + 0.50% + 25¢.

The markup falls at higher volume tiers. Helcim also lists ACH at 0.5% + 25¢, capped at $6, with an additional 0.05% on amounts above $25,000. Its pricing information lists no retained fee for chargebacks resolved in the merchant’s favor and a $15 fee when the merchant loses. Recurring payments add 0.4% per transaction, and Helcim says it does not charge an added fee for refunds. Review the U.S. fee disclosures for current terms.

Helcim can be inexpensive because you pay the underlying interchange rather than one opaque blended rate. It is especially worth modeling when your business has meaningful volume, larger average tickets, or a card mix that compares favorably with a flat-rate provider.

Where it can lose: The 25¢ online fixed fee is relatively unfavorable for very small transactions. Your actual interchange varies by card type, including rewards, commercial, premium, debit, and international cards. Helcim is not definitively cheapest without specifying your geography, channel, volume, average ticket, and payment mix.

2. Square: often the best low-volume in-person value

Best for: Retailers, restaurants, salons, service providers, market sellers, and other businesses that want a ready-made POS without a monthly fee on the free plan.

Rank #2
Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Square Free has no monthly subscription cost; you pay processing fees when you accept payments. The cited Square calculator displays 2.6% + 15¢ for in-person card-present payments and 3.3% + 30¢ for online card payments. Square also offers paid plans, and each payment mode—online, invoice, manual entry, or in person—can have different pricing.

Square’s advantages are simplicity, integrated POS tools, straightforward onboarding, and modest upfront complexity. The 15¢ fixed fee can work well for ordinary small-ticket in-person transactions, particularly when avoiding a monthly software subscription matters more than obtaining interchange-plus rates.

Where it stops being cheap: Higher volume can make the flat percentage costly. Online processing is priced differently from in-person acceptance, and paid POS plans add monthly costs. Square’s cited support information also lists ACH bank transfers through its API at 1%, with a $1 minimum and $5 cap; confirm the applicable product and current terms in Square’s fee information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Square when you want a simple in-person operating system, not merely the lowest possible processing rate.

3. Stripe: the flexible online choice

Best for: Ecommerce, SaaS, developers, marketplaces, subscription businesses, and companies that need customized checkout or international payment methods.

Stripe’s standard U.S. pricing lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic online card transaction, with no setup or monthly fee on standard pricing. Stripe lists additional charges of 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards, and 1% when currency conversion is required. ACH Direct Debit is listed at 0.8%, capped at $5.

Stripe also lists a $15 card-dispute fee, returned for won disputes under its stated terms. Standard pricing can be upgraded to custom pricing, volume discounts, or interchange-plus for eligible larger or specialized businesses. Stripe Terminal’s listed domestic in-person price is separate: 2.7% + 5¢.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stripe can reduce total operating cost when its Checkout, Payment Links, Billing, Invoicing, fraud controls, payment methods, and developer tools replace multiple products. That does not make its standard online card rate the cheapest. The 30¢ fixed fee is particularly important for low-value sales, while international, manually entered, billing, instant-payout, and other products can add costs.

Rank #3
SumUp Solo Credit Card Payment Card Reader with Charging Station. Full Touch-Screen Interface with Free SIM Card and Mobile Data (SumUp Solo)
  • An intuitive interface to easily accept payments and manage your sales.
  • Strong, reliable Wi-Fi connection. Free SIM card and mobile data so you can process payments anywhere.
  • Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
  • A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.
  • Support when you need it. Get in touch with our US-based support through phone, email and chat.

Choose Stripe when integration and payment-method breadth matter most. Choose another provider if your only goal is the lowest domestic card-processing rate and you do not need Stripe’s platform capabilities.

4. Stax: potentially cheapest at higher volume

Best for: Established merchants whose processing volume is high and consistent enough to justify a monthly subscription.

Stax advertises subscription pricing starting at $99 per month. Its listed annual-volume tiers are $99 per month up to $150,000 per year, $139 per month for $150,000–$250,000, and $199+ per month above $250,000. Stax states that it applies 0% markup to direct-cost interchange and lists fixed fees of 8¢ for card-present and 15¢ for card-not-present transactions. ACH is listed at 1%, capped at $10.

The subscription may beat a blended provider because you avoid a processor percentage markup. Stax also lists recurring billing, account updater, payment links, hosted payment pages, invoicing, ACH, and next-business-day funding among its features.

A break-even illustration

Consider a simplified card-present model:

  • Square: 2.6% + 15¢.
  • Stax: interchange + 8¢ + a $99 monthly subscription.
  • At 200 transactions per month, the subscription plus Stax’s fixed fees is about $115 before interchange.
  • The percentage component avoided versus Square is approximately 2.6% of volume.

This produces a directional break-even point of roughly $3,300 per month before differences in interchange, card mix, software, hardware, minimums, and contract terms. It is not a universal threshold: Stax passes interchange through, while Square’s blended rate includes it.

Also distinguish “no cancellation fee” from “no contract.” Stax’s pricing page includes no-cancellation-fee language while also referring to long-term contracts. Read the agreement before signing.

5. PayPal: valuable when wallet acceptance affects checkout

Best for: Ecommerce businesses whose customers expect PayPal, Venmo, Pay Later, or other wallet and alternative-payment options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PayPal’s U.S. fee page separates prices by product and payment method rather than presenting one universal rate. Its checkout products can support PayPal, Venmo, Pay Later, major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other methods. PayPal’s checkout information states that the referenced product has no monthly or setup fees, while custom rates and interchange-plus pricing may be available to established businesses processing substantial volume.

Rank #4
SumUp Plus Card Reader, Bluetooth - NFC RFID Credit Card Reader for Smartphone
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate
  • No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
  • Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
  • Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions
  • Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction

PayPal can be economically sensible when wallet recognition or Pay Later availability helps customers complete purchases. But do not treat it as interchangeable with an ordinary card processor or rank it using an old universal rate. Card, wallet, Pay Later, international, currency-conversion, dispute, and risk-related fees can differ. PayPal also states that it may increase percentage components after notice in certain higher-risk circumstances, including unusually high complaints, reversals, chargebacks, or claims.

Choose PayPal when access to PayPal-dependent demand is strategically important. It is not automatically the cheapest method for ordinary domestic card payments.

6. SumUp: a simple low-cost in-person alternative

Best for: Pop-ups, market vendors, mobile professionals, independent service providers, and very small businesses that mainly take payments in person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SumUp’s U.S. POS pricing page displays 2.6% + 10¢. The lower fixed fee can make SumUp attractive for small-ticket in-person transactions compared with Square’s cited 15¢ fixed fee. Its simple mobile POS positioning may also reduce software complexity.

Hardware, however, still belongs in the calculation. SumUp may be less suitable if you need sophisticated online checkout, recurring billing, marketplace payments, extensive API customization, or complex omnichannel inventory. Before choosing it for a growing business, compare the cost of adding any separate online or subscription solution.

Best choice by business profile

If your business is… Start by comparing… Why
Under roughly $5,000–$10,000 per month and mostly in person Square and SumUp No recurring account fee and simple hardware can outweigh small rate differences.
Online with low or unpredictable volume Stripe and Helcim Stripe offers flexible integration without a standard monthly processing fee; Helcim deserves a cost comparison if interchange-plus fits.
Growing with meaningful monthly volume Helcim Interchange-plus pricing and no account monthly fee may reduce the markup as volume grows.
High and consistent volume Stax and a negotiated Helcim or custom quote A subscription or negotiated markup may beat flat-rate pricing, but only after modeling your card mix.
ACH- or invoice-heavy Compare ACH caps and fixed fees separately Card rates are not the relevant benchmark, and ACH has different authorization, return, and settlement risks.
Customers specifically want PayPal or Venmo PayPal alongside a card processor Wallet availability may matter more than the lowest card-processing rate.

These are rules of thumb, not guarantees. The right answer changes with average ticket, transaction count, card mix, refunds, disputes, and software requirements.

Calculate your real annual cost

For each provider, estimate:

Annual cost = percentage fees
+ fixed transaction fees
+ monthly fees
+ hardware and software fees
+ ACH fees
+ international and currency fees
+ dispute and chargeback costs
+ payout fees
- fee waivers or caps

Then calculate:

Effective rate = annual payment-related cost ÷ annual processed volume

Enter these variables:

  • Monthly card volume and ACH volume.
  • Number of transactions and average order value.
  • In-person, online, keyed, recurring, and invoice percentages.
  • Domestic, international, debit, rewards, and commercial-card proportions.
  • Refund and chargeback rates.
  • Monthly software, hardware, and instant-payout costs.
  • Whether you need recurring billing, fraud tools, invoicing, or payment links.

Why average ticket matters

Using the published example rates above, a $20 transaction costs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2.6% + 15¢ = 67¢.
  • 2.9% + 30¢ = 88¢.

On a $200 transaction, the same arithmetic produces:

Best Value
Square Handheld - Portable POS - Credit Card Machine to Accept Payments for Restaurants, Retail, Beauty, and Professional Services
  • With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
  • Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
  • Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
  • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
  • 2.6% + 15¢ = $5.35.
  • 2.9% + 30¢ = $6.10.

These are arithmetic illustrations, not additional provider quotes. On small purchases, the fixed fee dominates. On larger purchases, the percentage difference matters more. A provider with a lower percentage but higher fixed fee may therefore be the wrong choice for your average sale.

Fees and risks to check before switching

Chargebacks

Compare the initial dispute fee, whether it is refunded when you win, whether disputed funds are withheld, and how evidence and representment work. Stripe lists a $15 dispute fee and says it is returned for won disputes under its standard terms. Helcim lists $0 for cases resolved in the merchant’s favor and $15 if lost. These policies should not be generalized to every provider.

Refunds

Check whether the original percentage and fixed fees are returned, whether a separate refund fee applies, and whether ACH refunds follow different rules. Stripe states that its original processing fees are not returned for most standard-payment refunds. Helcim says it does not charge an added refund fee. Those are different claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Holds and reserves

Fast onboarding does not guarantee uninterrupted funding. Aggregators may conduct continuing risk reviews. Sudden volume increases, unusually large tickets, high refund rates, or high chargebacks can trigger reviews or reserves. Describe your business accurately during signup and ask about reserve practices if you sell high-ticket goods, operate seasonally, or have an unusual risk profile.

Hardware

Include the reader or terminal price, replacement and protection plans, cellular connectivity, receipt printer, cash drawer, and whether the hardware is proprietary or portable to another processor.

International transactions

Do not compare domestic rates with international rates. Check cross-border surcharges, currency-conversion costs, settlement currencies, local payment methods, country availability, refunds, and disputes. Stripe and PayPal may justify higher headline costs when international payment coverage is essential, but calculate those charges separately.

Debit and ACH

Debit routing and PIN-debit treatment can materially change costs. Helcim states that U.S. common PIN-debit transactions use its interchange-plus model and may produce effective rates below 1%, but that is not a guarantee for every debit transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACH is often cheaper than cards, but it carries return and rejection risk, authorization requirements, potentially slower settlement, and different refund and dispute rules. Caps can also change the effective rate on larger payments.

Contracts and surcharging

“No cancellation fee” does not necessarily mean “no contract.” Review the agreement, minimums, equipment terms, funding provisions, and cancellation language. Surcharging can be restricted by card-network rules, state law, card type, and business model. Do not treat it as a universal savings strategy; verify current compliance requirements before implementing it.

Bottom line

Choose Helcim if you want interchange-plus pricing without an account monthly fee and can benefit from a more detailed cost calculation. Choose Square for simple, low-volume in-person acceptance with an integrated POS. Choose Stripe when online integration, subscriptions, and payment-method breadth matter most. Choose Stax when consistent volume is high enough for the subscription to offset percentage markups. Choose PayPal when PayPal, Venmo, or Pay Later customers are important. Choose SumUp for simple mobile or in-person acceptance with a low fixed fee.

The best way to save is not to choose the lowest advertised rate. Put your own volume, average ticket, channel mix, card mix, ACH usage, refunds, disputes, hardware, and software costs into the annual-cost formula, then compare effective rates and operational trade-offs.
