ChatGPT cannot tell you whether someone is honest, solvent, or likely to pay. It can, however, help you organize a client’s brief, emails, contract, and messages into three useful categories: observable evidence, unresolved questions, and practical safeguards.
Use the prompts below as screening tools—not as a substitute for reading the agreement, checking platform rules, or making your own decision.
Before you paste client information into ChatGPT
Remove information that is not necessary for the analysis. Redact names, addresses, phone numbers, bank details, account numbers, passwords, private customer data, and confidential trade information. You can replace them with labels such as [CLIENT], [PROJECT], or [PAYMENT AMOUNT].

If you are using ChatGPT on the web or desktop and do not want the conversation in your normal chat history, start a new chat and select the Temporary button in the top-right corner. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or use memory for personalization, and are not used to improve OpenAI’s models, although OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Actions connected to GPTs can send information to third parties under their own privacy policies.
You can upload documents such as PDFs, DOCX files, spreadsheets, CSVs, presentations, and text files. Each uploaded file has a 512 MB hard limit, while text and document files are capped at 2 million tokens per file. For most freelance screening, pasting the relevant sections is easier and reduces unnecessary disclosure.
For a repeatable workflow, create a project from New project in the sidebar. Open the three-dot menu, choose Project settings, and add instructions such as: “Separate facts from inferences, quote the source text, identify missing information, and never label a person as dishonest without evidence.” Project instructions apply inside that project and override global Custom Instructions. You can also find global instructions at Settings > Personalization on web and desktop, or Settings > Customize ChatGPT on iOS and Android.
1. Audit the project scope
Scope problems are often more financially damaging than an obviously bad offer. A client may describe one deliverable in an initial message and later assume that research, strategy, extra formats, meetings, or unlimited revisions are included.
Paste the brief and relevant messages into a new chat with this prompt:

Act as a freelance project-intake analyst.
Review the client’s brief and messages below. Identify:
1. The promised deliverable.
2. The requested deliverable.
3. Any vague, conflicting, or missing requirements.
4. Any language that could permit unlimited revisions, extra work, rush work, or additional deliverables without additional pay.
5. The decisions the client must make before work begins.
For every concern, quote or reference the exact wording that triggered it. Label each item:
- FACT: directly stated in the material
- INFERENCE: a reasonable interpretation
- UNKNOWN: information that is missing
Do not call the client “bad.” Instead, describe the project risk and write five clarifying questions I should ask before sending a proposal.
Client material:
[PASTE MATERIAL]The output should help you convert vague concerns into contract language. For example, “make it better” might lead to a defined deliverable, two revision rounds, one decision-maker, and an hourly rate for work outside the brief.
2. Check payment and contract terms
A client can be pleasant and still present unacceptable payment risk. Look for missing deposits, unclear invoice dates, approval conditions, payment terms tied to someone else paying first, and ownership transferring before you receive payment.
Use this prompt with the payment section or full agreement:

Act as a contract-risk checklist assistant for an independent freelancer. Do not give legal advice or decide whether this contract is enforceable.
Review the payment terms and agreement below. Extract:
- Total fee or rate
- Deposit or upfront payment
- Invoice dates
- Payment deadline
- Late-payment terms
- Approval conditions
- Cancellation and termination terms
- Refund language
- Ownership or transfer-of-rights conditions
- Responsibility for expenses
- Any clause that could require unpaid work
For each item, state:
1. What the document actually says.
2. What practical risk it creates for the freelancer.
3. What wording is missing or ambiguous.
4. A neutral question or revision request to send the client.
Flag payment terms that depend on vague approval, client payment from someone else, or an undefined event. Do not infer bad intent.
Agreement:
[PASTE AGREEMENT]Review the answers against the actual agreement. ChatGPT can miss definitions, exceptions, governing-law provisions, or language elsewhere in the document. It can also produce confident but incorrect interpretations. For a high-value contract, unusual liability clause, intellectual-property transfer, or dispute, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
If you work through a platform, check that platform’s specific payment rules. For example, Upwork identifies an unverified payment method as a risk because payment cannot be processed until the client completes billing-method verification.

3. Test communication and boundaries
The first few messages often reveal whether a project has a workable process. The useful question is not “Does this person seem unpleasant?” It is “What behavior could affect my time, income, or ability to finish the work?”
Analyze the client’s messages as evidence of working style, not personality.
Create a table with these columns:
- Exact message or behavior
- Observable fact
- Possible project impact
- Alternative benign explanation
- Boundary or process question to ask
- Risk level: low, medium, or high
Look specifically for:
- Pressure to start before the agreement is signed
- Pressure to work without a deposit or written scope
- Repeated urgency without a defined deadline
- Requests to communicate or receive payment outside a platform
- Disrespectful or threatening language
- Failure to answer direct questions
- Excessive after-hours or weekend expectations
- “Small” additions that are not in the brief
Do not diagnose the client or make a final accept/reject decision.
Messages:
[PASTE MESSAGES]Pay attention to the “alternative benign explanation” column. A short message may simply mean the client is busy. A request for a quick start may reflect a genuine deadline. The key test is what happens after you state a reasonable boundary: does the client clarify, agree, negotiate professionally, or continue pressuring you?
Platform restrictions matter here. Upwork says pressure to communicate outside Upwork before a contract begins is a red flag and violates its terms. That warning applies to Upwork activity; it is not a universal rule for every freelance relationship.
4. Audit expectations, revisions, and decision-makers
Many unprofitable projects fail because the client and freelancer are buying different things. A client may believe they are buying a finished business outcome, while the freelancer is offering a specific deliverable. Multiple stakeholders can make the problem worse when each person requests changes.
Review this client intake material for expectation mismatch.
Answer:
1. What does the client appear to believe they are buying?
2. What would I actually be responsible for delivering?
3. How many review or revision rounds are defined?
4. Who gives final approval?
5. Are there multiple stakeholders with potentially conflicting authority?
6. Are success criteria measurable?
7. Is the timeline realistic based only on the information provided?
8. What assumptions must be confirmed in writing?
Separate:
- Explicit requirements
- Implied expectations
- Unsupported assumptions
Then draft:
- A concise scope-confirmation email
- A revision-limit clause
- A change-request sentence stating that additional work requires a revised fee or timeline
Do not invent facts about the client.
Material:
[PASTE MATERIAL]Turn the result into a written confirmation before beginning. A practical version might state the deliverable, file format, deadline, number of revision rounds, feedback deadline, client responsibilities, and hourly or fixed fee for changes outside the scope.

A revision request is not automatically a warning sign. It becomes a scope problem when the number or purpose of revisions is undefined, feedback comes from conflicting stakeholders, or additional work is requested without changing the fee or timeline.

Use this final prompt after you have reviewed the brief, payment terms, and messages. It is designed to prevent one alarming sentence—or one positive impression—from dominating your decision.
Act as a cautious client-screening reviewer.
Using only the material provided, produce:
A. Positive signals
B. Concrete risk signals
C. Missing information
D. Questions that would resolve the uncertainty
E. Recommended safeguards if I proceed
F. A provisional decision: proceed, proceed only after clarification, or decline
Use a 0–2 scale for each category:
- Scope clarity
- Payment certainty
- Communication quality
- Decision-making structure
- Timeline realism
- Respect for boundaries
- Fit with my services
For every score, cite the exact evidence or state “insufficient evidence.” Do not treat a low budget, unusual industry, short message, or negotiation by itself as proof of a bad client. Do not predict whether the client will pay or behave badly. Explain what information would change the recommendation.Do not treat the total score as a scientific prediction. A low score means you need clarification or safeguards, not that the client is unethical. A high score does not eliminate the need for a signed agreement and clear payment terms.

| Boundaries are rejected | Pause the project or decline it. Do not let pressure force you into unpaid work or terms you cannot afford. |
Keep your own records: the approved proposal, contract, invoices, payment confirmations, change requests, and final sign-off. Good documentation protects your cash flow even when the client relationship is perfectly legitimate.

Can ChatGPT tell me whether a client is a scammer?
No. ChatGPT can organize supplied evidence and identify missing information, but it cannot reliably verify a private person’s solvency, payment history, identity, or intentions. Use it for risk triage, then verify important facts yourself.
Should I reject a client because ChatGPT gives them a high risk score?
Not automatically. Check the evidence behind each score. A low budget, negotiation, vague early-stage brief, or short message is not proof of bad intent. Ask clarifying questions and judge the client’s response to reasonable safeguards.
Is it safe to upload a client contract to ChatGPT?
Remove unnecessary personal and confidential information first. You can use a Temporary Chat to keep the conversation out of normal history, but review ChatGPT’s current privacy terms and avoid sharing information you are not authorized to disclose.
What is the strongest protection against a difficult client?
A written agreement with a specific scope, fee, deposit or milestones, payment deadline, revision limit, approval process, cancellation terms, and change-order procedure. The client’s willingness to accept reasonable terms is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee of payment.
