You generally cannot make a required minimum distribution (RMD) permanently tax-free, but three strategies can change when the income is recognized or keep a qualifying amount out of gross income: delay an RMD from your current employer plan while you continue working, send an IRA distribution directly to charity as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), or evaluate a qualifying longevity annuity contract (QLAC). Each has strict eligibility rules. A delay is usually a timing decision, a QCD exchanges personal cash for a charitable gift, and a QLAC trades liquidity and flexibility for insurance and special RMD treatment.
What can actually delay or reduce tax on an RMD?
The right choice depends on whether you are still employed, already give to charity, or need to insure income later in retirement. None of these methods lets you roll a current-year RMD into another retirement account or erase taxable income simply by moving money between account types.

| Strategy | Who can use it | Current tax effect | Main administration | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Still-working employer-plan delay | Still-working participant in a current employer plan, generally less than 5% owner | Postpones the plan distribution and its income inclusion | Confirm plan rules and retirement date | Separate IRAs still have RMDs; first-year delay can bunch two RMDs |
| QCD | IRA owner age 70½ or older giving to an eligible charity | Qualifying amount is excluded from gross income while counting toward the RMD | Direct trustee-to-charity transfer and records | No personal cash; account-source and charity rules apply |
| Qualifying QLAC | Owner buying a contract that meets QLAC requirements | Special regulatory RMD treatment for the qualifying contract | Contract selection and compliance review | Liquidity, fees, insurer strength and beneficiary terms require careful review |
Can I delay an RMD if I am still working?
Usually, yes—but only for the retirement plan of your current employer and only if the plan permits it. The exception generally applies when you are still employed, are not a 5% owner of the sponsoring business, and participate in a workplace plan such as a 401(k) or profit-sharing plan.
Use this eligibility checklist
- You are still working for the employer sponsoring the plan.
- You own less than 5% of that business.
- The plan document allows the still-working delay.
- You are delaying only that current employer plan’s RMD.
The exception does not postpone RMDs from a separate traditional IRA, SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA. Ask the plan administrator to confirm the plan’s definition of retirement and the date it will treat as your separation from service.

Why the first-year deadline matters
Your first RMD can generally be postponed until April 1 of the year after the applicable beginning year. The next year’s RMD is still due by December 31 of that same year. If you wait, two distributions can therefore land in one tax year. That may help cash flow or provide more planning time, but it is a timing choice—not permanent tax elimination—and the bunching can increase taxable income in the catch-up year.
How does a QCD satisfy an RMD without adding the amount to income?
A QCD is a transfer made directly by an IRA trustee to an organization eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. You must be at least 70½ when the transfer is made. The qualifying amount is excluded from gross income and counts toward your RMD; the IRS states that “A qualified charitable distribution will count towards your required minimum distribution.”

When a QCD is most useful
This approach fits an IRA owner who already intends to give to charity or who normally takes the standard deduction. Instead of receiving cash, including it in income and then donating, you direct the IRA trustee to send the money to the charity. The tax benefit is the exclusion of the qualifying amount from gross income; the trade-off is that you do not retain that cash for personal spending.

2026 limits and separate spouses
The Congressional Research Service reports a maximum QCD of $111,000 per person in 2026. A spouse with a separate IRA can generally make a separate QCD up to the same limit. CRS also reports a $55,000 one-time limit in 2026 for a split-interest entity.
How to execute and document it
- Confirm that the receiving organization is eligible for tax-deductible charitable contributions.
- Tell the IRA trustee to make the payment directly to that organization. A check paid to you and later donated may not receive QCD treatment.
- Keep the trustee’s distribution statement and the charity’s contemporaneous acknowledgment.
- Report the IRA distribution and the qualifying charitable amount correctly when filing your tax return.
QCDs generally come from traditional IRAs. Ongoing employer SEP and SIMPLE IRAs and defined-contribution plans such as 401(k)s or 403(b)s are not ordinary QCD sources, so a plan distribution cannot simply be relabeled as a QCD.
Is a QLAC worth considering for RMD planning?
A qualifying QLAC can receive special treatment in the RMD calculation under the rule in e-CFR §1.401(a)(9)-5(b)(4), which applies to an IRA. It is a technical retirement-income strategy, not a generic recommendation to buy an annuity.

What to examine before buying
- Whether the exact contract satisfies every QLAC requirement.
- The insurer’s financial strength and the contract’s fees.
- When income begins and how that date fits your spending plan.
- Beneficiary provisions and any survivor or refund features.
- Inflation protection, if offered, and how payments respond to rising costs.
- Liquidity restrictions and the irreversible nature of annuity economics.
- How the purchase changes the rest of your retirement portfolio.
The regulation establishes the RMD treatment for a qualifying contract; it does not mean every longevity annuity qualifies or that one is suitable for your household. Have a tax and retirement-income professional verify the contract before purchase.
Can I roll an RMD into a Roth IRA or another account?
No. Required distributions for a particular year are not eligible for rollover treatment. A traditional-IRA-to-Roth conversion is generally included in gross income in the conversion year, so it cannot turn that year’s RMD into tax-free income. You may convert an eligible traditional-IRA balance after satisfying the RMD, but the converted amount remains taxable for that year.
A Roth IRA owner has no lifetime RMD requirement, yet converting an RMD-eligible traditional-IRA balance still creates taxable income for the amount converted. Likewise, taking more than the minimum does not create a credit that can satisfy a future year’s RMD.

How should I choose among the three strategies?
Choose the workplace-plan delay when timing is your priority
Use it when you are still employed, meet the ownership test, and the plan permits postponement. First list every IRA separately so that delaying the employer plan does not cause you to overlook an IRA RMD.

Use the direct transfer when you can give from an IRA, are at least 70½, and do not need the distributed cash. Arrange the trustee-to-charity payment early enough for the transaction to be completed in the intended calendar year.
Investigate a QLAC only for a long-term income objective
Consider it when later-life income insurance and the contract’s RMD treatment justify giving up liquidity and accepting fees, insurer exposure and fixed contract terms. Compare the QLAC with the rest of your guaranteed and investment income rather than treating it as a stand-alone tax workaround.

What mistakes can undo the intended tax result?
- Assuming the still-working exception covers a separate traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA.
- Waiting until April 1 and overlooking the second RMD due by December 31.
- Having the QCD check payable to yourself instead of sending it trustee-to-trustee.
- Using an employer-plan distribution as though it were an ordinary QCD.
- Converting or rolling the year’s RMD and expecting the amount to be tax-free.
- Buying an annuity without confirming that the specific contract is a qualifying QLAC.
- Taking extra money from an account and assuming it reduces next year’s required distribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does delaying my first RMD always lower my total tax bill?
No. The delay changes the year of inclusion. If you take the postponed first distribution by April 1 and the next one by December 31, two RMDs may be taxable in the same year, so the result depends on your income in both years.
Can my spouse and I each use the 2026 QCD limit?
Generally, yes, when each spouse owns a separate IRA and independently meets the QCD rules. The reported 2026 maximum is $111,000 per person, rather than a single joint household cap.

Does every longevity annuity receive QLAC RMD treatment?
No. The contract must satisfy the applicable QLAC requirements. Have the insurer and a qualified tax professional confirm compliance before relying on the special calculation rule.
