Students can get professional developer software free or at a reduced price through programs such as the GitHub Student Developer Pack and JetBrains’ student licenses. The key is to compare the actual terms: some offers last only a few months, others require annual revalidation, and educational licenses may prohibit paid work. The 20 examples below reflect offers shown on official pages as of September 30, 2026; check each live offer before applying because partner terms and availability can change.

Start with the GitHub Student Developer Pack

The Pack is a collection of partner offers, not one software license with a single set of rules. GitHub says applicants must be at least 13 and enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting course. Applicants can provide a school-issued email address and/or official proof of current enrollment with a date. GitHub student validation lasts two years, after which revalidation is needed.

GitHub’s listing includes coding tools, testing and observability services, learning resources, and development platforms. These 14 entries are examples visible on its official offer page, not a permanent or exhaustive roster:

Tool Best for Offer shown on GitHub’s listing
GitKraken Student Plan Git client and repository workflows Free for six months, then up to 80% off the Pro price while the user remains a student.
BrowserStack Browser and mobile testing Free Automate Mobile Plan for one parallel and one user for one year.
New Relic Application monitoring and observability Free access while the user is a student. The offer card states a “$300/month value”; that is the listing’s valuation, not a verified saving.
Scrimba Interactive coding courses One month of free access to Pro courses, projects, and coding challenges.
Bootstrap Studio Visual web-page design Free license while the user is a student.
LocalStack Local AWS service emulation Free license for its AWS emulator in a ready-to-use cloud environment.
CodeScene Code analysis Free Student account for analyzing private GitHub repositories.
Requestly API and network request workflows Professional plan free for one year.
Polypane Responsive website testing Free access to the individual plan for one year.
Tower Git client Free Tower Pro license while the user is a student.
Codecov Code coverage reporting Free access for public and private repositories.
Arduino Cloud Connected-device projects Six months of Arduino Cloud, plus discounts on selected hardware.
Adafruit IO+ Internet of Things projects One year of Adafruit IO+, plus discounts on selected hardware.
GitHub Desktop Graphical Git workflows Free and open source for everyone; this is not a student-only discount.

GitKraken and GitLens are separate listings, so check which product and plan an offer applies to before redeeming. GitHub says partner terms are set by the partners, can change, and may include additional age or redemption requirements. Offers may not be redeemable more than once or stackable with other promotions.

Get a direct student license from JetBrains

JetBrains’ Student Pack gives verified students access to its IDEs for non-commercial educational purposes, including academic research. Verification options listed by JetBrains include a university email address, an ISIC/ITIC card, or a GitHub Student Developer Pack account. A student job, apprenticeship, internship, or other company work should not be assumed to qualify as educational use.

JetBrains says students and academic staff can use its tools free after verification. Its buying page lists a 40% graduation discount for eligible former student license holders. JetBrains Support’s FAQ, updated January 7, 2026, says the discount can be used for two years after the student license expires. Check the current terms when the license ends.

How to choose and claim an offer

  1. Confirm eligibility. Check the program’s definition of student, institution requirements, age limits, and accepted proof. An .edu address alone does not guarantee approval.
  2. Compare the benefit with your actual need. Distinguish a genuinely free plan from a limited trial, a percentage discount, a time-limited subscription, or credits that may have usage limits.
  3. Read the license and renewal rules. Note when the offer expires, whether it renews, what happens after graduation, and whether commercial work is allowed.
  4. Apply through the official program or vendor page. For Pack items, start with the GitHub Student Developer Pack listing and follow the partner’s redemption steps; for JetBrains, use its education licensing route.
  5. Record the end date and terms. Put revalidation or expiration dates on your calendar, and save the offer details so you can avoid unexpected charges or losing access mid-project.

What to check before relying on a student discount

  • Geographic availability: Offers may not be available in every country, and the listing does not establish worldwide access for each item.
  • Separate partner terms: The Pack is a gateway to offers, not a guarantee that every partner will approve every applicant.
  • Duration and renewal: A benefit described as free for six months or one year is not necessarily renewable. “While a student” still depends on continued verification and the vendor’s rules.
  • Use restrictions: JetBrains’ educational license is non-commercial. Check other products’ licenses before using them for paid client or employer work.
  • Existing promotions or trials: GitHub notes some partner offers cannot be combined with another promotion; do not assume an offer will stack with an account’s current trial.

Choose the route that fits your situation

For a broad mix of development, testing, monitoring, and learning offers, begin with GitHub’s Pack and inspect each partner’s redemption conditions. For JetBrains IDEs, apply directly through its student program and keep educational-use restrictions in mind. If you need a tool only briefly, compare the free period with the time required to finish your project; if you expect to keep using it after graduation, factor in the published renewal or graduate pricing rather than relying on a student rate indefinitely.
