There is no single website builder that is cheaper and better than Wix for everyone. The right replacement depends on what you are building and how you define cheaper: a lower monthly bill, a lower renewal price, fewer transaction fees, better design control, stronger ecommerce, or an easier path to move later.
For most readers, WordPress.com is the best broad Wix alternative for content and long-term flexibility. Squarespace is the better choice for polished design with little effort, Hostinger Website Builder has the lowest headline price among full-service builders when you accept a long prepayment, Shopify is best for serious ecommerce, and Carrd is dramatically cheaper for a one-page site. Agencies should look at Duda, while designers who want precise visual control should consider Webflow or Framer.
Wix remains a strong all-purpose builder. Its US annual reference prices are approximately $17 per month for Light, $29 for Core, $39 for Business, and $159 for Business Elite. Monthly prices, taxes, promotions, and availability vary by country and billing term. The biggest reason to leave Wix is often not price but portability: a complete Wix site cannot simply be exported and hosted on another provider.
Quick answer: which Wix alternative should you choose?
| Choose this | If you need | Public US pricing reference | Main advantage over Wix | Main warning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com | A blog, publication, SEO-focused business site, or flexible content platform | $4 per month billed annually, or $2.75 per month billed every three years | Better content workflows, paid plugin access, and a clearer route toward self-hosted WordPress | More setup and maintenance decisions than Wix |
| Squarespace | A visually polished portfolio, service business, or creative brand | No free plan; 14-day trial; confirm the live US checkout price | Curated templates and cohesive design with fewer decisions | Less freeform and commerce fees vary by plan |
| Hostinger Website Builder | The lowest-cost bundled builder for a small business | $2.99 per month on a 48-month term; renews at $10.99 per month | Low introductory cost with hosting, domain, email, and AI tools bundled | You pay $143.52 upfront for four years |
| Shopify | A product-based business with meaningful ecommerce operations | $29 per month annually, or $39 monthly, on Basic | Much stronger inventory, checkout, fulfillment, and sales-channel tools | Apps and payment fees can make it expensive |
| Webflow | Advanced visual design, marketing sites, CMS projects, or agency work | Free Starter; Basic $15 per month annually; Premium $25 annually | Greater layout, interaction, CMS, and component control | Site and workspace plans are separate |
| Framer | A modern portfolio, landing page, startup, or design-led marketing site | Free; Basic $10 per month; Pro $30 per month | Fast, responsive, design-first workflow | Editor seats, localization, AI credits, and add-ons need review |
| Square Online | A free store or a retailer already using Square POS | Free; Plus $29 per month; Premium $79 per month | Online and in-person sales, inventory, and customer data in one ecosystem | Payment-processing fees apply and design flexibility is narrower |
| Carrd | A one-page site, landing page, link page, or simple portfolio | Pro Lite $9 per year; Standard $19; Plus $49 | Exceptionally cheap and easy | Not a full replacement for a blog, catalog, or complex store |
| Duda | Freelance, agency, white-label, or multi-site client work | Basic $19 per month annually; Agency $52 annually | Client permissions, multi-site management, and white-label tools | Poor value for one personal website |
| GoDaddy Website Builder | A fast, basic local-business launch | From $9.99 per month with an annual term | Quick setup and convenient domain, marketing, and payment bundling | Less design and content depth than leading alternatives |
Prices are US-dollar public reference prices checked around August 10, 2026. Promotions, taxes, country, billing term, renewal rates, included sites, email, add-ons, and payment fees can change. A monthly equivalent is not the same as a monthly payment.

What makes an alternative cheaper or better than Wix?
Before comparing logos, decide which problem you are trying to solve. People usually look for a Wix alternative because one or more of these has become important:
- Lower long-term cost: the renewal price, domain, email, apps, and payment fees matter more than the first promotional rate.
- Better design: Squarespace, Framer, and Webflow may produce a more controlled or modern visual result.
- Better publishing: WordPress.com is a stronger fit for blogs, documentation, directories, and large content libraries.
- Better ecommerce: Shopify is built around store operations, while Square Online is especially useful for physical retailers using Square.
- More design control: Webflow gives experienced designers more precise control over responsive layouts and interactions.
- Agency features: Duda is designed for client permissions, white-label delivery, and multiple websites.
- Less lock-in: WordPress and some other platforms provide more useful exports or a clearer path to another host.
- A genuinely free option: Square Online has a free selling plan, although payment-processing fees still apply.
- A narrower, cheaper tool: Carrd costs far less than Wix when all you need is one page.
These are different types of improvement. Shopify may be better operationally for a store but needlessly expensive for a consultant with five informational pages. Carrd may be better financially for a launch page but unsuitable for a 100-page site. The rankings below therefore mean best for a particular job, not universally superior.
How to compare the real cost
A fair comparison should include both the first year and the year after any promotion expires:
First-year cost = subscription + domain + email + required apps + add-ons + payment fees
Renewal-year cost = renewal subscription + domain + email + apps + add-ons + payment fees
Also record the amount charged today. A $2.99 monthly equivalent that requires $143.52 upfront is a different cash-flow decision from a $4 monthly subscription. Check these items before paying:

The 10 best Wix alternatives in 2026
1. WordPress.com: best overall for content and long-term flexibility
Best for: blogs, publishers, content-heavy business sites, documentation, directories, memberships, and businesses that may eventually want more control.
WordPress.com paid plans start at $2.75 per month billed every three years, or $4 per month billed annually. Its free plan does not expire, but it uses a WordPress.com subdomain and does not include plugin installation or an ad-free visitor experience. Paid plans include plugin installation, a first-year domain, unlimited pages and users, SSL, CDN hosting, malware protection, DDoS protection, brute-force protection, managed updates, and support. See the official WordPress.com pricing page.
The key distinction is between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com is a hosted, managed service. WordPress.org is open-source software that you install on separate hosting and maintain yourself, including hosting, security, updates, themes, plugins, and backups. The difference is explained by WordPress.org and WordPress.com.
Why it may be better than Wix: WordPress has a more mature publishing model, more content-oriented workflows, and paid plugin access beginning on the entry paid WordPress.com plan. It also offers a more practical path from managed hosting to self-hosted WordPress.org if your needs grow.
Important portability limitation: WordPress.com is more portable than Wix, but its standard export is not a complete visual clone. The XML/WXR export can include posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, links, and references to media. It does not automatically include the original theme design, customizations, plugins, or the actual media files. A full migration requires a migration plugin or complete backup process. The WordPress.com export documentation explains the limitation.
Choose it if: your site will become a substantial content asset. Avoid it if: you want the simplest possible five-page brochure site and do not want to make decisions about themes, plugins, or content structure.
2. Squarespace: best for polished design with minimal effort
Best for: photographers, consultants, restaurants, creative studios, portfolios, and service businesses where presentation matters.
Squarespace has no permanent free plan, but offers a 14-day trial without a credit card. Hosting is included, and annual plans include a free custom domain for one year. Its current plan family is Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced. Because the public pricing page changes by region, billing cycle, promotion, and account state, confirm the live US price at Squarespace checkout rather than relying on an old comparison table.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Squarespace is often a better design choice than Wix for a beginner who wants a cohesive result without making hundreds of layout decisions. Its templates are more curated, and the system is less freeform. That restriction is also the trade-off: Wix generally gives you more freedom to place and modify elements, while Squarespace more strongly guides the visual system.
Commerce costs require special attention. The current comparison shows a 2% online-store transaction fee on Basic and 0% on higher tiers. Digital content and membership transaction fees are shown as 7%, 5%, 1%, and 0% across the plan levels. Card-processing rates vary by country and plan. The commerce pricing page should be checked for your market.
Choose it if: you want a professional-looking brand site quickly. Avoid it if: you need highly unusual layouts, a large plugin ecosystem, or the lowest possible store fees on a low-tier plan.
3. Hostinger Website Builder: best low-cost all-in-one option
Best for: budget-conscious beginners, local businesses, simple portfolios, and small stores.

Hostinger advertises its Premium Website Builder at $2.99 per month on a 48-month term. The total upfront charge is $143.52, and the advertised renewal rate is $10.99 per month. Its Business Website Builder is advertised at $3.79 per month on a 48-month term, totaling $181.92 upfront, with renewal at $16.99 per month. These figures are listed on Hostinger’s website-builder page.
Premium includes hosting, a first-year domain, drag-and-drop editing, more than 300 templates, AI tools, SEO and marketing tools, mobile editing, and email allowances. Business adds ecommerce features, up to 1,000 products, more websites, more than 100 payment methods, live analytics, Printful integration, and no Hostinger transaction fee. Confirm current limits at the Hostinger ecommerce page.
Hostinger is not permanently free. It offers a free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, according to its trial documentation.
The financial catch: $2.99 is not an ordinary month-to-month commitment. You must prepay four years, and the renewal price is much higher. It can be a good value if you are confident you will keep the site for four years, but it is not the cheapest short-term or low-cash-commitment option.
Choose it if: you want hosting, domain, email, AI, and a builder in one low-cost package. Avoid it if: you need a deep design ecosystem, advanced publishing, or the flexibility of self-hosted WordPress.
4. Shopify: best for serious ecommerce
Best for: product businesses, growing catalogs, inventory, shipping, fulfillment, subscriptions, marketplaces, and multichannel selling.
Shopify Basic costs $29 per month billed annually or $39 per month billed monthly in the US. Grow is listed at $79 annually or $105 monthly, and Advanced at $299 annually or $399 monthly. The Shopify pricing page lists the current rates and features.
Basic includes a full online store, unlimited products, hosting, a custom domain, SSL, inventory management, social and marketplace selling, abandoned-checkout recovery, discounts, gift cards, marketing automations, and Shopify checkout. That makes it much stronger than a general-purpose builder when running the store is the central business activity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not compare only the subscription. On Shopify Basic in the US, the displayed Shopify Payments online card rate is 2.9% + $0.30. If you use an external payment provider, Shopify lists a 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic, in addition to the provider’s own charges. The third-party transaction-fee documentation explains this distinction.
Shopify has a specific Wix migration guide covering manual copying, CSV imports, migration apps, experts, and a first-party Store Migration app in early access. The early-access app has limitations, including a maximum of three product options and no support for location-based prices.
Choose it if: orders, inventory, fulfillment, and checkout are more important than unrestricted page design. Avoid it if: you only need a brochure site; the subscription and app ecosystem may cost more than necessary.
5. Webflow: best for advanced visual control
Best for: designers, agencies, custom marketing sites, sophisticated interactions, and CMS-driven projects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWebflow’s free Starter site includes a Webflow.io domain, two static pages, 1 GB of bandwidth, 50 form submissions, limited CMS access, and Webflow AI. The Basic site plan is $15 per month billed yearly and includes a custom domain, up to 300 static pages, 10 GB bandwidth, unlimited form submissions, and password protection. Premium is $25 per month billed yearly and adds CMS capacity, code components, site search, file uploads, and related features. See Webflow pricing.
Webflow offers more precise control over layout, breakpoints, interactions, animations, reusable components, and design systems than most drag-and-drop builders. That makes it a better fit for a designer who wants to control the implementation rather than simply choose a template.
Billing is easy to underestimate: Webflow site plans and workspace plans are separate. Each site using a custom domain needs its own site plan. A team or agency may therefore pay both for the workspace and for each published site. The site-plan documentation explains the separation.
Webflow changed its plan structure in May 2026, including a Premium consolidation, new pricing, a Team plan, and AI credits. Existing-account transition dates vary. Also, Webflow’s User Accounts functionality was disabled on all sites on January 29, 2026. Do not choose it for a new native gated-membership site based on older reviews. See the 2026 pricing notice and User Accounts documentation.

Choose it if: design control and a professional production workflow justify the learning curve. Avoid it if: you want the easiest first hour or need built-in membership accounts.
6. Framer: best for modern landing pages and portfolios
Best for: portfolios, startup sites, product launches, landing pages, and design-forward marketing websites.
Framer’s public plans are Free, Basic at $10 per month, Pro at $30 per month, and Enterprise at custom pricing. Basic includes a custom domain, two CMS collections, 50 GB bandwidth, up to 30 pages, and up to 1,000 CMS items. Pro includes 10 CMS collections, 100 GB bandwidth, redirects, staging, branching, up to 150 pages, and up to 2,500 CMS items. Check the current Framer pricing page.
Framer’s strength is speed from design concept to responsive, polished site. It is a particularly attractive Wix alternative for a designer or startup that wants modern layouts and interactions without adopting Webflow’s more technical workflow.
Read the plan details carefully. Framer introduced a new billing system on May 27, 2026, separating full-editor and content-editor seats; viewers are free. In June 2026 it also introduced AI credits and simplified plans. Additional editors, localization, advanced hosting, conversion features, and AI usage can affect the real cost. The billing explanation, subscription and charge guide, and AI-credit announcement are better references than older reviews.
Choose it if: your site is relatively small and visual quality is the priority. Avoid it if: you need a large publication, a mature store operation, or many collaborators without extra seat costs.
7. Square Online: best free store and retail integration
Best for: restaurants, salons, local retailers, physical sellers, and businesses already using Square Point of Sale.
Square Online’s US plans are Free at $0 per month, Plus at $29 per month or $348 annually, and Premium at $79 per month or $948 annually. The displayed online payment-processing rate is 2.9% + $0.30 on Free and Plus, and 2.6% + $0.30 on Premium. See Square’s plan page.

There is no monthly subscription charge, but Square takes payment-processing fees when you make a sale. Online and in-person sales, inventory, customer data, and orders can be managed through the Square ecosystem.
Square Online is therefore a better financial and operational choice than Wix for a small retailer that already uses Square. It is not necessarily better for a creative studio that wants unusual editorial layouts or a content-heavy blog.
Square acquired Weebly. Official Weebly support says the legacy builder is not currently scheduled for discontinuation, but recommends Square Online for new sites and the latest features and support. Treat Square Online and legacy Weebly as related but not identical products; see the official support update.
Choose it if: you want a real free store or need online and physical sales together. Avoid it if: design flexibility and publishing depth matter more than POS integration.
8. Carrd: best one-page Wix alternative
Best for: landing pages, link pages, event pages, waitlists, resumes, simple portfolios, and one-page business sites.
Carrd Pro costs $9 per year for Pro Lite, $19 per year for Pro Standard, and $49 per year for Pro Plus. Pro Lite supports up to three sites and removes Carrd branding. Standard adds custom domains, forms, widgets, embeds, analytics, and meta tags. Plus supports up to 25 sites, custom domains, SSL, advanced settings, custom forms, and source downloads. See Carrd’s plan documentation.
For a one-page site, Carrd can be dramatically cheaper than Wix and faster to learn. Pro Standard is often the useful business tier because it adds a custom domain, forms, analytics, and embeds without a meaningful annual subscription.
Carrd is not a full Wix replacement. It is the wrong tool for a large blog, complex navigation, product catalog, advanced memberships, or sophisticated ecommerce. Its advantage is that it does not try to be everything.

- 【Adjustable & Ergonomic】:This laptop stand can be adjusted to a comfortable height and angle according to your actual needs, letting you fix posture and reduce your neck fatigue, back pain and eye strain. Very comfortable for working in home, office and outdoor.
- 【Sturdy & Protective】 :Made of sturdy metal, it can support up to 17.6 lbs (8kg) weight on top; With 2 rubber mats on the hook and anti-skid silicone pads on top & bottom, it can secure your laptop in place and maximum protect your device from scratches and sliding. - 【Heat Dissipation】 :The top of the laptop stand is designed with multiple ventilation holes. The open design offers greater ventilation and more airflow to cool your laptop during operation other than it just lays flat on the table.
- 【Portable & Foldable】:The foldable design allows you to easily slip it in your backpack. Ideal for people who travel for business a lot.
- 【Broad Compatibility】:Our desktop book stand is compatible with all laptops from 10-15.6 inches, such as MacBook Air/ Pro, Google Pixelbook, Dell XPS, HP, ASUS, Lenovo ThinkPad, Acer, Chromebook and Microsoft Surface, etc.Be your ideal companion in Home, Office & Outdoor.
Choose it if: one page genuinely meets your needs. Avoid it if: you expect your site to become a large content or commerce platform.
9. Duda: best for agencies and freelancers
Best for: agencies, freelancers, white-label client work, and professionals managing multiple websites.
Duda lists Basic at $19 per month billed annually or $25 monthly, Team at $29 annually or $39 monthly, Agency at $52 annually or $69 monthly, and White Label at $149 annually or $199 monthly. Basic and Team include one site; Agency and White Label include four. Additional sites are listed at $19 per month or $171 per year on Basic, and $17 per month or $168 per year on Team, Agency, and White Label. See Duda’s pricing page.
Duda separates platform capabilities from site subscriptions and provides client management, permissions, white-labeling, custom widgets, APIs, code access, and multi-site workflows. It offers a 14-day trial without a credit card. Duda says its sites are hosted on AWS and CloudFront and advertises unlimited storage and bandwidth with a 99.5% uptime target; that is a company target, not independent uptime measurement.
Duda can be more efficient than Wix when you repeatedly build and hand off client sites. It is usually financially irrational for one personal website, and ecommerce or booking capabilities may require additional purchases.
Choose it if: you bill clients for repeatable website production. Avoid it if: you are building only one site and do not need agency controls.
10. GoDaddy Website Builder: best for a fast local-business launch
Best for: local businesses, domain customers, and owners who want a basic website online quickly.
GoDaddy advertises Website Builder from $9.99 per month with an annual term, with a stated annual-term saving. The product focuses on fast setup, templates, marketing tools, and online payments. Check the current GoDaddy pricing page for renewal pricing, domain charges, email, taxes, and payment fees before checkout.

Choose it if: speed and convenience outweigh customization. Avoid it if: your site is a long-term content asset or your brand needs a distinctive design system.
Which alternatives are actually cheaper than Wix?
The answer changes by website type. The following comparisons use public US reference prices and exclude taxes, optional apps, email upgrades, and payment-processing fees unless noted.
Recommended Free Tools
Scenario 1: a simple brochure site
| Platform | Reference cost | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Carrd | $9 to $49 per year | Best value if one page is enough; do not compare it feature-for-feature with Wix. |
| WordPress.com Personal | $48 per year annually, or $99 upfront for three years | Hosted plan with paid plugin access, but more content and setup choices. |
| GoDaddy Website Builder | About $119.88 for the first annual term at $9.99 per month | Verify renewal, domain, email, and payment costs. |
| Framer Basic | $120 per year at $10 per month | Strong design workflow for a relatively small site. |
| Hostinger Premium | $143.52 upfront for 48 months | Low monthly equivalent, but a long prepayment and $10.99 monthly renewal. |
| Wix Light | Approximately $204 per year at $17 per month annually | Reference benchmark; country, tax, and term can change the checkout price. |
For a genuinely simple site, Carrd is the clearest cost winner. For a conventional multi-page site, WordPress.com, Framer, Hostinger, and GoDaddy can undercut Wix depending on the features you need and how you value prepayment.
Scenario 2: a small service business
Once you add a custom domain, email, contact forms, analytics, booking, payment acceptance, multiple users, and marketing tools, the headline subscription becomes less useful. WordPress.com may be the strongest long-term content choice, Squarespace the easiest polished option, and Hostinger the lowest bundled price. A booking system or email platform may cost extra on any of them.
Wix can remain competitive here because Core and Business include more business-oriented capabilities than Light. Before moving solely to save money, list every Wix feature you use: forms, bookings, automations, email campaigns, chat, payments, memberships, apps, and integrations. Replacing several of those separately may erase the subscription saving.
Scenario 3: a small ecommerce store
| Platform | Subscription reference | Best economic fit | Cost to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Online | Free, Plus $29 monthly, Premium $79 monthly | Lowest fixed cost, especially for Square POS users | Payment processing: displayed rates are 2.9% + $0.30 on Free and Plus, 2.6% + $0.30 on Premium |
| Hostinger Business | $3.79 monthly on a 48-month term; $181.92 upfront | Low-cost small catalog and bundled hosting | 48-month prepayment and renewal at $16.99 monthly |
| Shopify Basic | $29 monthly annually, $39 monthly | Growing store operations and multichannel selling | 2.9% + $0.30 online card rate shown for Shopify Payments; external gateways can add a 2% Basic-plan transaction fee |
| Squarespace | Confirm live plan price | Design-led store with relatively modest operational complexity | Basic currently shows a 2% online-store transaction fee; higher tiers show 0%, while digital-content fees vary by plan |
| Wix | Core approximately $29 monthly annually; Business approximately $39 | Small store combined with a general business site | Payment, app, and plan-specific fees must be checked at checkout |
At low sales volume, Square Online’s free plan can minimize fixed cost. At higher volume, compare payment rates and operational features rather than simply choosing the lowest subscription. Shopify may cost more monthly but save time and reduce operational friction for a serious merchant.

Scenario 4: an agency building multiple sites
For agencies, calculate the cost per client site, not the cost of one personal plan. Duda is built for this model, with white-labeling, client permissions, APIs, custom widgets, and multi-site management. Webflow can be powerful for design-led agencies, but its workspace and site plans are separate. Wix Studio, managed WordPress, and Squarespace’s professional offerings may also fit, but their pricing and workflow should be compared to the number of sites, seats, and handoffs involved.
Duda’s Basic plan starts at $19 per month annually but includes one site; Agency starts at $52 annually and includes four sites. That distinction makes Duda look expensive for one site and potentially economical for repeat client production. Always include additional-site fees and the time saved by client-management features.

WordPress.com is the strongest general recommendation for a content-heavy SEO program because its publishing model and plugin access can grow with the site. Webflow suits custom marketing sites and structured CMS projects. Squarespace is a sensible choice for a smaller service or portfolio site where the owner wants core SEO controls without plugin management. Framer, Carrd, and GoDaddy can work well for smaller sites, but their narrower content models matter as the site grows.
Do not treat labels such as SEO-friendly or AI-search ready as ranking guarantees. Verify URL control, redirects, structured data, sitemap behavior, and migration support for the specific plan.
Which alternative is best for ecommerce?
- Shopify: best for serious product commerce, inventory, shipping, fulfillment, subscriptions, marketplaces, and multichannel selling.
- Square Online: best for local retail, restaurants, and businesses already using Square POS and inventory.
- Hostinger: best for a low-cost store with a modest catalog and limited operational complexity.
- Squarespace: best for a design-led store with a relatively small catalog and strong brand presentation.
- WordPress.com: best when extensibility, content, and plugins matter, although the reader must understand the hosted WordPress.com model and the chosen commerce setup.
- Wix: still a strong all-round choice for smaller stores and service businesses that want ecommerce alongside flexible pages.
Compare product variants, digital products, subscriptions, taxes, shipping, inventory, POS, abandoned-cart recovery, customer accounts, payment gateways, marketplace connections, and transaction fees. A cheap store plan that requires several paid apps can cost more than a higher subscription with those workflows built in.
Portability: the most important difference for Wix users
What moving a website really involves
Moving a domain is not the same as moving a website. A complete migration may involve:
- Domain registration and DNS
- Page copy and page structure
- Blog posts, authors, categories, and tags
- Original images, downloads, and other files
- Products, variants, inventory, customers, and orders
- Forms, submissions, bookings, and leads
- Analytics, pixels, email marketing, and integrations
- Page slugs, metadata, structured data, and redirects
- Design, responsive layouts, custom code, and platform widgets
Wix confirms that its sites use proprietary SaaS architecture and must run on Wix servers. You can move content manually or use platform-specific exports, but the complete design and functionality generally need to be rebuilt. Read Wix’s export and external-hosting explanation.
You can transfer a Wix site to another Wix account, but that is an account transfer rather than an export to a different platform. Wix also allows a domain to be transferred to another registrar, subject to conditions including an ICANN 60-day lock after some recent registration, transfer, or contact-information changes. See the site-transfer guide and domain-transfer guide.
Portability by platform
| Portability level | Platforms | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Higher | Self-hosted WordPress.org; WordPress.com with qualifications; Carrd Pro Plus | More useful content or source exports, but designs, themes, plugins, and hosted services may still need rebuilding. |
| Medium | Shopify, Squarespace, Webflow | Some products, content, assets, or code can move, but themes, CMS behavior, apps, and hosted features do not transfer identically. |
| Lower | Wix and most proprietary SaaS builders | The domain can usually move separately, but the hosted design, widgets, and backend functionality remain platform-dependent. |
Even a platform with good exports does not guarantee a one-click replacement. Structured data is easier to move than visual design; page copy is easier to move than forms, customer accounts, orders, or app functionality.
Wix migration checklist
- Inventory the current site: record every page URL, blog URL, product URL, form, integration, tracking script, and recurring subscription.
- Export what the destination supports: use Wix exports where available, and manually copy content that cannot be exported.
- Download original media: retain full-resolution images, logos, PDFs, product photos, and other files in an organized backup.
- Export store data: separately preserve products, variants, customers, orders, tax settings, shipping rules, and discounts where the relevant destination supports them.
- Choose the destination before canceling Wix: keep the existing site live while building and checking the replacement.
- Recreate URLs: use the same slugs where practical and create a redirect map for every changed URL.
- Rebuild functionality: replace forms, bookings, memberships, automations, analytics, chat, and payment integrations.
- Check SEO settings: verify title tags, meta descriptions, canonicals, sitemap, indexing controls, image alt text, and structured data.
- Test mobile and forms: submit every form, test checkout, check confirmation emails, and review the site on phones and tablets.
- Point the domain only after verification: update DNS or transfer the domain when the replacement is ready, remembering that a domain transfer may be subject to a 60-day lock.
- Monitor after launch: watch Search Console, analytics, redirects, checkout, leads, and 404 errors for several weeks.
- Cancel at the right time: do not cancel Wix until the new site, domain, email, and critical records are confirmed to work.
How to choose in 60 seconds
- Choose WordPress.com if your site is primarily a long-term content asset and you want more flexibility than Wix.
- Choose Squarespace if the visual result matters most and you want a guided, cohesive design system.
- Choose Hostinger if your priority is the lowest bundled price and you are comfortable prepaying 48 months.
- Choose Shopify if products, orders, inventory, fulfillment, and checkout are the center of the business.
- Choose Webflow if you are a designer or agency that needs precise control and accepts a steeper learning curve.
- Choose Framer if you need a modern portfolio, startup site, or landing page and can work within its page, CMS, seat, and add-on limits.
- Choose Square Online if you want a free store or already run in-person sales through Square.
- Choose Carrd if one page is enough and cost is the dominant concern.
- Choose Duda if you build and manage websites for clients.
- Choose GoDaddy if speed and convenience matter more than advanced design or publishing.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Have I compared the same billing term across platforms?
- What will I pay today, and what will I pay at renewal?
- Is the free domain temporary?
- Do I need separate email hosting?
- How many sites, users, editors, products, pages, and CMS items are included?
- Will I pay payment-processing or platform transaction fees?
- Which apps are required for booking, memberships, shipping, analytics, or email?
- Can I export my content, media, products, customers, and orders?
- Can I recreate my current URLs and redirects?
- What will happen to my domain, email, forms, and data if I cancel?
- Does the platform support the SEO controls and integrations I actually use?
- Am I choosing a full website builder when a cheaper narrow tool such as Carrd would do?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wix cheaper than its alternatives?
Sometimes, but there is no universal answer. Wix annual reference pricing is approximately $17 per month for Light, $29 for Core, and $39 for Business in the US. WordPress.com, Carrd, Framer, Hostinger, Square Online, and GoDaddy can have lower headline prices, but you must compare billing terms, renewal rates, email, domains, apps, and payment fees. Hostinger’s $2.99 monthly equivalent requires a 48-month prepayment, while Square Online’s free plan still charges payment-processing fees.

Usually not completely. Wix sites depend on Wix’s proprietary hosted architecture and cannot simply be exported and hosted elsewhere. You can move or recreate content, media, products, and domains to varying degrees, but the original design, Wix widgets, forms, apps, and backend functionality generally need to be rebuilt. Moving a site to another Wix account is different from exporting it to another provider.
Should I choose WordPress.com or WordPress.org?
Choose WordPress.com if you want managed hosting, support, SSL, CDN hosting, and managed updates. Choose WordPress.org if you want the open-source software on hosting you select and are prepared to manage security, backups, updates, themes, plugins, and hosting yourself. They are related but not the same product.
What is the cheapest Wix alternative for ecommerce?
Square Online has a $0 monthly plan and is particularly attractive for local retailers and businesses using Square POS, but payment-processing fees apply. Hostinger Business has a low bundled price for a small store, while Shopify Basic is usually the stronger operational choice for a growing store. Compare payment rates, transaction fees, apps, shipping, inventory, and fulfillment rather than subscription price alone.
Is Carrd a complete Wix replacement?
No. Carrd is a narrow, inexpensive alternative for one-page sites, landing pages, link pages, events, and simple portfolios. It is not designed to replace Wix for large blogs, complex navigation, product catalogs, memberships, or sophisticated ecommerce.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich Wix alternative is best for avoiding platform lock-in?
Self-hosted WordPress.org generally offers the most control because you manage the hosting and software. WordPress.com provides useful content exports but its standard export does not include the complete design, plugins, or actual media files. Carrd Pro Plus supports source downloads. Shopify, Squarespace, and Webflow offer varying exports, but hosted themes, apps, CMS behavior, and integrations may still need rebuilding.
The Bottom Line
For most people leaving Wix, start with WordPress.com, Squarespace, or Hostinger based on the reason you are leaving. WordPress.com is the strongest broad choice for content and future flexibility; Squarespace is the best design-led replacement; and Hostinger is the lowest-cost bundled option when a four-year prepayment and higher renewal rate are acceptable. Choose Shopify for a serious store, Square Online for free or POS-connected selling, Webflow or Framer for design control, Duda for client work, Carrd for one page, and GoDaddy for a fast basic local-business site.
Before switching, compare the renewal-year cost and make a migration inventory. The cheapest subscription is not necessarily the cheapest website to operate, and a domain transfer is not the same as a portable website.
