The best GIF maker for Android depends on what you are starting with. ImgPlay is the most clearly documented all-purpose creator here: it converts videos or multiple photos, edits existing GIFs, captures with the camera, and exports GIF or video. GIPHY is a better fit when you want camera decoration and the option to publish to a GIF platform. A keyboard such as Tenor serves a different job—finding and sending an existing reaction GIF rather than creating one from your own clip.
The other names below are useful candidates from 2026 app roundups, but their exact Android package, publisher, maintenance status, and feature set should be confirmed in Google Play before installation. No hands-on device test supports a ranking of output quality or speed.

What “GIF maker” means on Android
Search results use “GIF maker” for two separate categories:

- Search-and-sharing tools provide a searchable library and a keyboard or share sheet. They are convenient for replying with a reaction, but they may not accept your own video as source material.
Decide which category you need before comparing feature counts. A small converter can be the right choice for a one-off clip, while a larger editor earns its place when you repeatedly add text, crop frames, or control playback.

The candidate names in the lower eight rows come from independent lists, not from a current, independently reproduced ten-app test. Unstore’s list was published May 13, 2026, and Wyzowl’s roundup was last updated January 26, 2026: Unstore’s Android roundup and Wyzowl’s GIF-app roundup. Treat those references as starting points, not proof that every listing still exists or behaves as described.
Detailed picks and their trade-offs
1. ImgPlay: the broadest documented creator workflow
ImgPlay’s current Google Play description covers the largest range of inputs in this shortlist. You can start with a video in your gallery, select multiple photos, edit a GIF already in the gallery, capture with the camera, or import material from another app. Editing controls listed by the publisher include filters, frame cropping, captions, playback speed, and playback direction. The app can save the result as a GIF or as a video, with low, medium, and high resolution choices. See the ImgPlay Google Play listing.
That combination makes ImgPlay the sensible first installation for a reader who has not yet settled on a source type. It also gives you an escape route: if a messaging app handles video more reliably than GIF, export a video instead of forcing a GIF file.
Google Play currently labels the listing as containing ads and in-app purchases and shows more than one million downloads. Store labels and counts change, so read the live listing at the time you install. A 2019 developer reply on the same listing said Android and iOS versions were not the same and called the Android app a “past model.” That is historical evidence, not a current statement about parity or development; do not use it to infer today’s feature gap.
2. GIPHY: decorate a capture and share it to a platform
GIPHY’s official mobile instructions document a workflow from the camera or camera roll. The editor can add text, filters, stickers, trim, and crop, then upload a creation to a GIPHY account. GIPHY identifies mobile apps for both Android and iOS on its mobile apps page. The detailed Android steps and limitations are in GIPHY Support’s “How to Create on Mobile” guide.
There is an important platform qualification: the support page marks normal, reverse, and ping-pong loop modes as iOS-only. Do not assume that a tutorial showing those controls applies to Android. If you need those playback modes on an Android phone, confirm that the current Android build actually exposes them before planning a workflow around them.
GIPHY is strongest when your output belongs on a searchable GIF platform or when you want quick visual decoration. It is less clearly a private, local-only editor because the documented flow includes uploading to an account as an option. Review the upload step and account settings if the footage is personal or confidential.

3. Gif Me! Camera: a camera-first candidate
Gif Me! Camera appears in the 2026 Android-app shortlist as a camera-oriented GIF maker. The available evidence does not establish its current package name, publisher, Android compatibility, export resolutions, watermark policy, or price. Search Google Play for the exact title, inspect the publisher identity, and confirm that the listing accepts the source you intend to use before installing.
Choose this candidate only after answering three practical questions in the live listing: can it import an existing video or only capture new motion; can it export a standard GIF to storage; and does it require an account or upload? If your priority is a known gallery-video workflow rather than camera capture, ImgPlay has clearer documented support.
4. Ezgif: a browser tool when you do not want another app
Ezgif is named as a web-based option that can be used in an Android mobile browser. That distinction matters: a browser workflow avoids installing a package, but your media must be selected through the browser and processed according to the site’s current limits. Check the live page for file-size limits, supported formats, retention and deletion terms, and whether an upload is acceptable for your footage.
A browser editor can be convenient on a one-off job, especially when you are using a phone with limited storage or cannot identify a trustworthy native package. It is a poor fit for sensitive recordings if sending the source to a web service conflicts with your privacy requirements. The roundup evidence does not establish a current Android-specific app listing or a particular set of editing controls.
5. Tumblr: social posting rather than a guaranteed standalone editor
Tumblr appears in a 2026 roundup of Android GIF-related tools. The evidence supplied here does not show that the current Android app exports a standalone GIF with the same controls as a dedicated editor. Treat it as a social-platform option: verify whether the screen you need creates, converts, or merely posts animated media.
If the goal is a file you can save locally and attach anywhere, test the export path before editing a long clip. If the goal is to publish an animated post to the platform, confirm account, visibility, and media-size rules in the current app.
6. GIF Toaster: a conversion candidate to verify carefully
GIF Toaster is listed among Android GIF-app candidates, but no primary Android listing details were established for this article. Before choosing it, check the exact publisher and package, whether video and multiple photos are accepted, the maximum clip length, available resolution, and whether a watermark or ad appears on export.
Rank #3
A conversion-focused tool can be preferable to a feature-heavy editor when you simply need a short clip turned into a GIF. Conversely, if you need captions, stickers, speed changes, or frame-by-frame trimming, do not infer those controls from the name; confirm them in the current listing and first-run interface.

7. GIF Studio: consider it when frame control is the priority
GIF Studio is named in the independent shortlist as a frame-level editing candidate. The sources do not verify a current package, publisher, or exact control set. Look specifically for frame deletion or reordering, per-frame timing, cropping, text, and a way to preview the loop before export.
Frame editing can solve problems that a simple video converter cannot: removing a single blurred frame, shortening a pause, or changing the rhythm of an animation. It can also make a workflow slower. If you only need a reaction clip from a video, start with the simplest verified converter instead of assuming that more controls will improve the result.
8. Tenor GIF Keyboard: search and send, not a personal-video maker
Tenor is the clearest example of why the phrase “GIF maker” is ambiguous. The 2026 roundup identifies Tenor GIF Keyboard as a search-and-sharing tool rather than an app that makes a GIF from scratch. It is therefore useful when you want to find a reaction GIF while typing, not when you want to convert your own camera recording.
Keyboard apps can request access that deserves scrutiny. Read the Android permission screen, check which messaging apps are supported, and confirm whether you can use search without creating an account. If your requirement is to make and save a GIF from a private video, choose a documented creator instead.

A 2026 roundup names an app described as GIF Maker by Kayak Studio. Generic titles are a special identification risk: multiple unrelated apps can use “GIF Maker,” and a search result can change publisher or package. Match the publisher exactly, read the recent reviews and “updated” date, and confirm that the listing is an Android app rather than an advertisement for a web service.
Before importing personal media, check the permissions and whether processing occurs locally. Confirm the actual source options—video, photos, camera, or existing GIF—and the export format. The available evidence does not support assigning this app a particular feature set or price.

10. GIF Maker by Pixster Studio: another candidate requiring an identity check
GIF Maker by Pixster Studio is also named in the 2026 shortlist. Use the publisher name as the disambiguator, not the generic title alone. Verify the package, compatibility with your Android version, update history, ads, in-app purchases, and any limits on clip length or resolution.
Open the editor with a short, non-sensitive sample first. Confirm that the exported file opens in your gallery and can be attached in the destination app. If it silently uploads media, adds a watermark, or saves only a proprietary project, it may not meet the practical definition of a GIF maker for your workflow.
How to choose by the source you have
You have a video in the gallery
Start with a creator that explicitly accepts gallery video. ImgPlay documents that input and provides trim, crop, speed, direction, captions, filters, and GIF/video export. Select a short segment, remove dead time at both ends, preview the loop, and choose the lowest resolution that remains legible for your destination. Smaller output is easier to send and less likely to hit an attachment limit.
You have several still photos
Use an app that explicitly supports multiple-photo import. ImgPlay lists that capability. Put the photos in the intended order, set or inspect each frame’s timing, and preview the transition before exporting. A static slideshow with no visible change is technically an animation file but will not read as a useful GIF.
You want to animate a camera capture
GIPHY documents camera input, while ImgPlay lists camera capture as an input. Decide whether the result should remain a local file or be uploaded to a platform. In GIPHY’s workflow, account upload is an available step; skip it when local handling is your requirement.
You already have a GIF
ImgPlay’s listing says it can edit GIFs from the gallery. Look for frame cropping, trimming, captions, filters, speed, and direction controls. Re-exporting can reduce quality or alter timing, so keep the original and compare the new file before deleting anything.

Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Step-by-step: make a GIF from a video on Android
- Check the source. Trim the original video in your gallery if it contains private sections or long pauses. Keep the original file as a backup.
- Open a verified creator. In ImgPlay, choose the video/gallery option described in its current listing. In another app, confirm that the import control names video rather than only photos or camera capture.
- Set the in and out points. Drag the trim handles to the action you want. Shorter clips generally produce smaller files and clearer loops.
- Adjust the frame. Crop out empty areas, rotate if needed, and inspect frame-level controls if the app provides them.
- Add only necessary decoration. Captions, filters, and stickers can improve context but also cover image detail and increase processing steps.
- Preview playback. Check speed and direction. If the app offers loop modes, confirm that the control is available on Android; GIPHY’s support documentation identifies normal, reverse, and ping-pong modes as iOS-only.
- Choose output. Select GIF when you need animation compatibility, or video when the destination handles video better. In ImgPlay, the listing describes low, medium, and high resolution choices.
- Open the exported file. Test it in your gallery and in the app where you plan to share it. Look for a watermark, unexpected crop, missing caption, or a file that is too large.
GIPHY’s documented mobile workflow and Android caveat
GIPHY’s support instructions describe selecting the camera or camera roll, then using text, filters, stickers, trim, and crop before optionally uploading the creation to a GIPHY account. If you select a static image, GIPHY Support warns: “If you’ve selected a static image from your camera roll, just remember that GIFs must be animated, so make sure to add some movement during the editing process!”
That warning is practical: a single still image does not become meaningful motion merely because it is saved with a GIF extension. Add movement, combine frames, or begin with a video or camera capture. Keep the iOS-only loop-mode note in mind when following tutorials made for another platform.
Costs, ads, uploads, and privacy checks
Do not assume that “free” means unrestricted. Ads, in-app purchases, watermarks, export caps, and resolution limits can change with an update or by region. ImgPlay’s current Play listing labels ads and in-app purchases; the other candidate apps require live-listing checks rather than assumptions from a roundup.
- Read the current store listing. Confirm the publisher, package, Android compatibility, update date, ads, and purchase disclosures.
- Inspect permissions. A camera editor may need camera and media access; a keyboard may request permissions that are broader than a file converter.
- Decide where processing occurs. A browser or platform-upload workflow can send media off the device. Avoid uploading confidential recordings unless the service’s terms and privacy controls meet your needs.
- Test export before a long project. Use a short, non-sensitive clip to reveal watermarks, login requirements, resolution caps, or proprietary project formats.
- Keep originals. Re-encoding can change quality and timing. Save the source video or photos separately.
Common problems and fixes
The result is too large to send
Trim more aggressively, reduce resolution, remove unnecessary frames, or export video if the destination prefers it. ImgPlay lists low, medium, and high resolution choices; select the smallest level that preserves readable text.
The GIF looks frozen
Confirm that you imported motion rather than one still image. Add movement when using a static camera-roll image, as GIPHY’s support guidance explains. Also check that frame timing is not excessively long.
The app cannot find the video
Verify media permission, move the file into a standard gallery folder, and check whether the app supports your video format. If the listing only promises photos or camera capture, choose a creator that explicitly lists gallery-video import.
The export has a watermark or unexpected ad
Read the live listing and export screen before committing to a project. A paid upgrade may remove branding, but do not infer its price or availability without checking the current Android offer.
A tutorial shows controls you cannot find
Check the platform and version. GIPHY specifically documents some loop modes as iOS-only, and an old ImgPlay developer reply described Android/iOS differences in 2019. Historical or iOS instructions are not proof that the same controls exist on your Android device.
You installed the wrong generic app
Uninstall it, revoke permissions if necessary, and search again using the exact publisher and package shown in the intended listing. “GIF Maker” is not a unique identity.
A practical decision rule
- Need to convert a gallery video or several photos? Start with ImgPlay because those inputs and editing controls are explicitly documented.
- Need camera decoration and optional platform publishing? Consider GIPHY, while checking Android-specific controls and the upload step.
- Need a browser-only, one-off conversion? Evaluate Ezgif’s current limits and privacy terms before uploading.
- Need to find and send a reaction? Use a search/share keyboard such as Tenor, not a creator.
- Considering any generic-name candidate? Verify publisher, package, permissions, update history, export behavior, and purchase terms first.
These rules avoid the most common mismatch: choosing a sharing keyboard for a creation task, or choosing a platform uploader when the requirement is a private local file.
