Zoom really did end its longer free one-to-one meetings—but the change took effect on May 2, 2022, not in May 2026. Before the change, a free Basic user’s one-to-one meeting could last up to 30 hours; afterward, it was generally capped at 40 minutes. Zoom’s Basic plan still generally has that 40-minute limit today.
What changed—and when
Zoom announced in April 2022 that free Basic users would lose the longer time allowance for one-to-one meetings. The old allowance was sometimes described as unlimited, but it was technically capped at 30 hours per meeting. The new cap was 40 minutes, bringing one-to-one meetings into line with the limit already applied to most free group meetings. Contemporary coverage reported Zoom’s confirmation of the change.
- May 2, 2022: The change took effect for free and free credit-card-verified accounts.
- July 15, 2022: Zoom extended the uniform rule to Basic users on paid accounts.
Zoom’s historical support notice documents those dates. The headline describes a genuine policy change, but it is historical news, not a newly announced 2026 restriction.

Zoom’s current support documentation says almost all meetings scheduled and hosted by Basic users are limited to 40 minutes. Its Basic plan page lists meetings of up to 40 minutes and up to 100 participants. The limit applies to one-to-one calls as well as meetings with more people in ordinary cases.

The key factor is generally the host’s license, not whether a particular participant has a free Zoom account or whether there are only two people on the call. A free user joining a meeting hosted under a paid licensed account is not automatically subject to the free-host limit. Conversely, a company email address or access to a paid organization does not by itself prove that the person hosting has a paid license; Basic users within paid organizations can still be subject to the Basic duration limit.
Zoom’s current time-limit documentation says licensed paid users can host meetings lasting up to 30 hours. That is a maximum, not an unlimited meeting. Special circumstances—including meetings started without the host, meetings where only one person remains, and some Zoom Rooms or trial arrangements—may be treated differently from a standard hosted call, so check Zoom’s support guidance if your setup is unusual.

What happens at 40 minutes?
When the applicable limit is reached, Zoom ends the meeting. A host on Basic can start another session and invite participants to rejoin, but that is a workaround, not a way to remove the limit. It may interrupt a conversation, require guests to use a new link or reconnect, and create an awkward break.

For casual calls that reliably finish within 40 minutes, staying on Basic may be entirely workable. For therapy, coaching, tutoring, interviews, consultations, or other sessions expected to run 45, 50, or 60 minutes, a forced interruption can be a poor fit. Before a session, confirm the host’s actual license and ask an account administrator whether a paid license is assigned if the account is company-managed.

Options for calls that need more time
- Keep using Zoom Basic: Best if calls fit within 40 minutes or an occasional reconnection is acceptable. The trade-off is that every meeting hosted by a Basic user remains subject to the applicable cap.
- Use a paid Zoom host: Zoom’s paid licensed plans permit meetings of up to 30 hours. This can make sense when uninterrupted calls, existing Zoom workflows, administration, or other paid-plan features matter. Check Zoom’s current pricing page for the price and plan terms available in your country; billing, taxes, promotions, and regional offers can change.
- Consider a service you already have: Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Jitsi Meet, Webex, or another provider may fit your needs. Do not assume an alternative’s free duration, participant cap, recording options, or account requirements are permanent; check its current terms before moving a professional or recurring session.
Compare more than meeting length. Consider whether guests need accounts, whether they can join in a browser, participant limits, screen sharing, recording and transcript settings, waiting rooms and access controls, telephone dial-in, and the privacy or compliance requirements of your work. For confidential or regulated sessions, verify the provider and account configuration are appropriate; a longer time limit alone does not make a service suitable.
Paying for Zoom is not automatically the best value. If you make only occasional short calls, the free plan may be enough. If an interruption would undermine a paid session, compare the cost of a paid Zoom license with an alternative you already subscribe to—and weigh guest friction and required privacy controls alongside price.
