Zoom reportedly signed a lease for 19,085 square feet at Bellevue’s 25-story Symetra Center, according to a January 3, 2025 report based on a Broderick Group real-estate report and Bellevue permit records cited by the Puget Sound Business Journal. The deal put Zoom in the Seattle region’s dense technology corridor, but it was described as a satellite office—not a headquarters move from San Jose.
What Zoom leased in Bellevue
The reported tenant is Zoom Video Communications, and the reported premises measure 19,085 square feet at Symetra Center in Bellevue, Washington. The building is a 25-story office tower.
The public account came through commercial-real-estate reporting and permit records rather than a detailed Zoom announcement. The January 3, 2025 article said Zoom had not provided additional details at publication. The available report does not establish the lease term, rent, tenant-improvement allowance, floors or suite, move-in date, construction scope or planned staffing.

Satellite office, not a headquarters relocation
Bellevue was presented as a Seattle-region satellite office. Zoom’s corporate headquarters remained in San Jose, California, and nothing in the available reporting indicates a headquarters relocation or consolidation.
That distinction matters for employees, investors and local real-estate observers. A satellite lease can support recruiting, customer meetings, collaboration or regional operations without signaling that a company is moving its principal corporate base.
What “Microsoft’s backyard” means
The phrase describes Bellevue’s position in the Eastside technology corridor, not an office next door to Microsoft. Bellevue sits across Lake Washington from Seattle, while Microsoft’s headquarters is in nearby Redmond. The source describes Microsoft as “just down the road,” but does not provide a verified mileage or travel-time figure.

That concentration gives Zoom access to an experienced labor market while placing it near employers competing for many of the same technical and business professionals.
What was known about hiring and office use
Four Seattle positions were listed on LinkedIn when the January 2025 article was published. That was a time-sensitive snapshot, not a hiring target or headcount estimate.

A Seattle-tagged job is not necessarily a Bellevue-based job. It may be assigned to another local office, available remotely in Washington or structured as hybrid work. The report did not identify the Bellevue team’s function, employee count or intended occupancy.

Access to specialized talent
Bellevue offers proximity to software, cloud, artificial-intelligence, infrastructure, product and enterprise-sales talent. Establishing a local office can let Zoom recruit people who do not want to relocate to San Jose.
Customer and partner proximity
The Puget Sound region contains large technology and enterprise buyers. A physical presence can make customer meetings, recruiting events and partner relationships easier even when most work remains hybrid.
A flexible regional footprint
A satellite office can provide meeting and collaboration capacity without the cost and organizational implications of a headquarters move. It can also preserve flexibility if hiring or office attendance changes.

Zoom’s two competitive battles
Product competition
Zoom competes with Microsoft Teams and Google’s collaboration products. Microsoft can bundle Teams with Microsoft 365, while Google can integrate Meet with Gmail, Calendar and Drive. Zoom therefore has to persuade organizations that its meeting, phone, room and workplace tools deliver enough value beyond an existing productivity-suite contract.
Labor-market competition
The same geography that offers Zoom a deep talent pool also exposes it to Microsoft, Amazon, Google and other employers. The January 2025 report also mentioned regional activity by Snowflake, ByteDance, Pokémon and OpenAI. Those companies were part of the corporate neighborhood, but the report does not establish that each competed for exactly the same roles or office users.
The Microsoft personnel connection
Michelle Chang, a longtime Microsoft leader, joined Zoom as chief financial officer in October before the Bellevue lease report. Her move gave the expansion an additional Microsoft connection, but the available reporting does not link her appointment to the lease decision or show that she directed it.

By early 2025, Zoom was positioning itself beyond videoconferencing. The company had launched AI Companion 2.0 and described itself as an “AI-first work platform for human connection.” That broader portfolio increases the potential relevance of Bellevue talent in enterprise software, collaboration, artificial intelligence and cloud services.
The lease alone does not show that the Bellevue office developed AI Companion, housed an AI team or served any particular product group.

The coverage also said Zoom had begun asking employees to work from the office two days per week during the prior year. That company-wide context does not establish a Bellevue-specific attendance rule or prove how heavily the leased space was used.
What the 2025 report still does not answer
- Whether Zoom ever opened the Bellevue office on schedule.
- Whether the company still occupies the 19,085-square-foot premises as of August 18, 2026.
- How many employees are assigned to Bellevue or the wider Seattle area.
- Which teams use the space and whether its role is engineering, sales, customer support, recruiting or shared workplace capacity.
- The lease’s term, rent, concessions, tenant improvements and renewal provisions.
- Whether the footprint expanded, contracted or was subleased.
Without a newer company statement, current permit or tenant record, or another dated source, the responsible description remains that Zoom reportedly leased the space in 2025. It should not be described as an active or growing Bellevue operation in 2026 without confirmation.
What the Bellevue move could mean for Zoom
The transaction was a meaningful regional-expansion signal because it placed Zoom in one of the most concentrated technology labor markets in the United States and near major collaboration competitors. It also carried clear risks: Bellevue office costs and compensation are high, recruiting competition is intense, and a large lease can be inefficient if employees remain mostly remote.
Four contemporaneous job listings cannot demonstrate a large engineering center or a fully staffed 19,085-square-foot office. Nor does the lease prove that Zoom was responding to Microsoft’s return-to-office policies, that Chang caused the expansion or that Bellevue became the base for Zoom’s AI work.
Bottom line
Zoom’s reported Bellevue lease was specific and substantial enough to signal a stronger Seattle-region presence: 19,085 square feet at Symetra Center, near the Microsoft-Redmond technology corridor. It was not a headquarters relocation, and the available evidence does not establish the office’s opening, staffing, function or continued occupancy by August 18, 2026. The business significance is therefore best understood as potential access to talent and customers—not proof of a disclosed large-scale hiring push.
