Zoom and Mitel’s partnership is a way for existing Mitel customers to add Zoom collaboration and AI while keeping Mitel telephony in place—not an automatic replacement for a Mitel phone system. The companies announced the partnership on September 18, 2024, and announced a global rollout on February 27, 2025. Its practical value depends on whether a customer’s Mitel platform, devices, integrations, region and licensing are supported.

What Zoom and Mitel announced

The partnership combines Zoom Workplace and Zoom AI Companion with Mitel communications platforms. Mitel customers can use Zoom collaboration capabilities alongside existing Mitel telephony and devices, with the option to move selected users or sites toward Zoom Phone over time. Zoom was designated Mitel’s exclusive UCaaS offering within its broader unified-communications portfolio.

The initial announcement targeted availability in the first half of 2025; the companies announced a global rollout on February 27, 2025. “Globally available” describes the rollout announcement, not a guarantee that every product, feature or configuration is available in every country. Buyers should confirm current availability and terms with Zoom, Mitel or an authorized partner. Zoom’s partnership announcement · Rollout announcement

How the hybrid approach works

Here, “hybrid” refers to a mix of communications systems and deployment models, not simply employees working both at home and in an office. A deployment may retain Mitel’s on-premises, hosted or private-cloud telephony and physical endpoints while adding Zoom’s cloud collaboration applications. Some users or sites may later move to Zoom Phone.

Mitel’s Common Communication Framework is the integration mechanism the companies describe. Publicly stated capabilities include bi-directional presence, escalation from a Mitel call to a Zoom video meeting, integration with Mitel devices and centralized user provisioning and administration. Zoom describes migration by team or site, but that is an intended model—not a guarantee that every Mitel configuration can be moved without disruption.

  • Telephony: Mitel PBX environments, devices and existing voice workflows can remain part of the deployment.
  • Collaboration: Zoom Workplace provides capabilities such as Meetings, Team Chat, Whiteboard, Docs and desktop and mobile experiences.
  • Cloud phone: Zoom Phone may be an option for users or locations moving toward cloud telephony.
  • Integration and administration: The framework is intended to connect functions such as presence and call-to-video escalation and simplify provisioning.

Conceptual view, not a certified topology: Mitel telephony and devices → Common Communication Framework → Zoom Workplace, Zoom AI Companion and, for selected deployments, Zoom Phone.

The public descriptions do not establish that every Mitel feature, third-party integration, device, contact-center workflow or deployment model works identically. Treat compatibility as a configuration-specific question. Zoom’s Mitel integration page

What Zoom AI Companion may add

Zoom describes AI Companion features across eligible Zoom services, including meeting and chat summaries, action items, drafting and meeting preparation. For Zoom Phone, described capabilities include call summaries, voicemail prioritization and extracting tasks from voicemail. These tools may reduce manual follow-up, but their availability and scope depend on the relevant service, plan, region, industry and administrator settings. Zoom AI Companion overview

Do not assume AI Companion automatically interprets every Mitel call, recording, customer record or connected business application. The public product descriptions do not establish universal access to Mitel telephony data or third-party systems.

AI summaries and transcripts also create governance work. Before enabling them, determine who can access outputs, how long they are retained, where data is processed, what controls administrators have, and whether recordings or transcriptions require notice or consent under applicable privacy, labor and sector rules. Verify current contractual and technical terms with the vendors. AI output should be reviewed rather than treated as a guaranteed record of what happened.

What the partnership does—and does not—mean

The offer is best understood as coexistence with a migration path:

  1. Coexistence: Keep Mitel voice while adding Zoom collaboration.
  2. Selective migration: Move chosen departments, users or sites to Zoom Phone if their needs and configurations fit.
  3. Broader cloud transition: Reduce on-premises dependency gradually, subject to technical and operational requirements.
  4. Full replacement: Evaluate separately. The partnership announcement does not prove that every Mitel system, integration or specialized function can be retired.

Nor does the partnership itself guarantee one price, one support contract, regulatory compliance, contact-center feature parity or uninterrupted service during a WAN or cloud outage. A hybrid design can preserve local infrastructure, but resilience still depends on how routing, backup connectivity, power, emergency calling and failover are configured and tested.

Who should consider it?

The strongest potential fit is an organization that already runs Mitel and wants modern meetings, chat, mobile collaboration or Zoom AI capabilities without replacing telephony all at once. That can be especially relevant when a business has substantial Mitel device or PBX investment, specialized integrations, a need for physical endpoints, or a reason to migrate by site or user group.

Mitel has positioned its hybrid communications offering around security, control and regulated or vertical use cases. These are vendor-described priorities, not proof that the solution automatically meets a particular organization’s compliance obligations. The partnership announcement cited research that 91% of enterprises prioritize a hybrid approach and 82% of leaders planned more flexible working styles over the following two years; treat those as figures cited by the vendors, not as universal or independently established market facts.

It may be a weaker fit for a small organization with no Mitel estate, a buyer seeking a simple cloud-only service, or a company already standardized on Microsoft 365 and Teams. Contact-center-first buyers should evaluate contact-center products separately: the partnership’s central proposition is unified communications and collaboration, not guaranteed parity for advanced routing, workforce management, quality management or omnichannel engagement.

Alternatives to compare

  • Microsoft Teams and Teams Phone: A natural comparison for organizations centered on Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Exchange and related workflows. Assess the cost and complexity of Teams Phone, operator connectivity or Direct Routing, and required integrations. Zoom also offers a Teams integration and Zoom Phone Direct Routing path, so coexistence can be assessed separately. Zoom and Microsoft Teams integration
  • Cisco Webex: Worth evaluating where Cisco networking, telephony, meeting-room devices, security or contact-center systems are already central to operations.
  • RingCentral: A cloud-first UCaaS option for buyers who do not need to preserve a Mitel PBX estate.
  • Mitel-centered deployment: Keeping Mitel as the main platform may be simpler if the priority is existing telephony and workflows rather than introducing a new collaboration suite.

Compare systems against the actual estate, requirements and support model; no option is best for every enterprise. Avoid assuming that a list price tells the whole story: include calling, licensing, devices, migration, partner services and ongoing support.

Buyer checklist: validate before signing

Request written, deployment-specific answers—not just a general compatibility statement.

  1. Platforms and versions: Which Mitel PBX families, software releases, firmware, endpoints and on-premises or cloud models are supported?
  2. Call behavior: How do inbound and outbound PSTN calls, extension dialing, transfers, hold, hunt groups and auto attendants work? What about fax, paging, analog and specialized endpoints?
  3. Emergency calling and resilience: Test office, remote and nomadic users, desk phones and softphones, including WAN or cloud failure states. Confirm local survivability, failover behavior and regional requirements.
  4. Presence and escalation: Is presence bi-directional for the exact user types in scope? Can every supported user escalate a call to video, and what happens with external callers or guests?
  5. Identity and administration: Confirm SSO, directory synchronization, the provisioning source of truth, role-based access, audit logs and joiner/mover/leaver workflows.
  6. Custom integrations: Validate CRM, healthcare, financial-services, call-recording, contact-center, paging and building-management integrations in a proof of concept. A general partnership claim does not show that a customization will carry over unchanged.
  7. AI controls: Confirm eligible plans, regional availability, languages, administrator controls, recording and transcription settings, retention, data residency and contractual treatment of customer content. Check consent and notice requirements.
  8. Total cost: Obtain a complete quote covering Zoom Workplace, Zoom Phone if needed, Mitel platform and support, calling, devices, implementation, managed services, migration and termination fees. Public materials do not provide a universal Zoom–Mitel bundle price; Zoom’s integration page directs buyers to sales.
  9. Support responsibility: Establish which vendor or partner owns triage and resolution for cross-platform incidents, and agree escalation paths, service commitments and geographic coverage.

A practical evaluation sequence is to inventory Mitel platforms and dependencies, select a representative pilot group, validate identity and provisioning, test presence and escalation, and exercise phones, mobile clients, PSTN, emergency calling and outage procedures. Then test AI policy and retention, price the full deployment, and expand in phases with explicit rollback criteria.
