Short answer: The offer was legitimate, but “four free phones” never meant four unconditional gifts. The January 28, 2026 promotion required four new lines, a qualifying plan and eligible devices. It may also have expired or changed: one associated Total Wireless promotion listed an April 15, 2026 end date. The four-line price and the free-phone offer were not necessarily available together on every plan.
Before switching, verify the live offer, eligible phones and complete checkout total. The deal is best understood as a discounted multi-line service bundle—not four phones with no ongoing cost or restrictions.
What the original Total Wireless offer promised
Android Central reported on January 28, 2026 that Total Wireless customers could qualify for up to four free smartphones by activating four new lines on the carrier’s Base 5G Unlimited plan. The article cited a starting single-line price of $40 and described four lines at $25 per line, or about $100 per month before applicable taxes and fees. It listed phones such as the Moto G Stylus (2025) and Samsung Galaxy A36 5G, and said no trade-in or credit check was required.
Those were the reported mechanics of that specific promotion. They should not be treated as current universal terms. The article did not establish whether every line required a port-in, whether there was a minimum paid-service period, how unlocking worked, or whether the promotion was limited to one account or one transaction.

Catch No. 1: The January deal may be over
The promotion was time-sensitive. An official Total Wireless result associated with the free Galaxy A36 5G offer stated that it ended April 15, 2026, or while supplies lasted. As of the plan information checked on August 18, 2026, Total Wireless had a different plan lineup. The site still features a free 5G phones category, but its promotional pages contain mixed, dated offer language.
That means a banner, search result or article can describe a real deal that is no longer available. Confirm the offer directly in the phone catalog and checkout cart before transferring numbers or buying service.
Catch No. 2: Four $25 lines and four free phones were not necessarily one package
The National Advertising Division found in February 2025 that Total Wireless advertising could misleadingly suggest that customers received both four lines at $25 each and four free 5G phones regardless of the plan selected. The NAD decision is important because it separates two claims that headlines can compress into one bargain.
In practical terms, the phone benefit may require one plan tier while the advertised four-line price may apply to another. Never assume that the cheapest four-line plan also qualifies for every free device. The cart must show the device discount and the qualifying plan together.
What Total Wireless plans cost now
The following prices were shown on Total Wireless’s plan page on August 18, 2026. They include Auto Pay and may not include taxes, surcharges or other checkout charges.

Total Wireless identifies these as Auto Pay prices. The advertised $5 Auto Pay reduction is an account-level discount, not $5 off every line. Taxes and fees may apply, and the final amount depends on location and ordering path.

These totals are service costs only. Add any SIM, activation, device, tax or surcharge amounts displayed at checkout. Then compare that total with the cost of keeping your existing service and buying phones separately.
Which phones qualify?
The historical article named the Moto G Stylus (2025), Galaxy A36 5G, Moto G Power (2025) and Galaxy A16 5G among possible qualifying devices. These are budget or midrange phones, not current iPhones or Galaxy S-series flagships. Their value depends on whether they provide enough storage, camera quality, performance and software support for each person using them.

Do not assume those models remain eligible in September 2026. Promotions can be device-specific, inventory can run out, and Total Wireless can change or discontinue offers. The live phone page and cart should show the exact model, promotional price and eligibility before payment.
What “free” means here
A free phone promotion generally waives the advertised device price when the customer completes the required activation and service purchase. It does not mean that the service is free, that taxes disappear, or that the phone can immediately be used on another carrier.

The applicable offer terms should say whether the price is reduced at checkout or provided through credits, and what happens if service is changed or canceled.

- New-customer status: Is the offer restricted to new Total Wireless accounts?
- New lines: Must all four lines be newly activated rather than upgrades to existing lines?
- Porting: Are numbers required to move from another carrier, or do new numbers qualify?
- Plan tier: Does the exact plan in the cart qualify for each selected phone?
- Account limits: Is there a one-per-account or one-per-household limit?
- Verification: Is identity or eligibility verification required?
- Auto Pay: Does the displayed price depend on enrolling in Auto Pay?
- Extra charges: Are SIM, activation, taxes or surcharges added at checkout?
- Inventory: Are all four chosen phones actually in stock and attached to the promotion?
- Locking: When, and under what conditions, can each phone be unlocked?
- Service duration: Is there a minimum period required to retain the promotional benefit?
- Returns: What is the return window, and what happens to the service or promotion if a device is returned?
Is the service really unlimited?
The current plans are labeled unlimited for on-device data, but that does not mean unlimited full-speed hotspot use or identical performance to Verizon postpaid. Starter includes 10GB of hotspot data at 5 Mbps. MAX plans include unlimited hotspot at 5 Mbps, while ALL ACCESS lists unlimited hotspot at 10 Mbps.
Total Wireless also warns that customers may experience reduced speeds compared with postpaid customers during congestion. Coverage depends on location, device compatibility and network conditions. Total Wireless uses Verizon’s network, but that is not a guarantee of identical coverage, priority or performance. Check your ZIP code and ask whether the network works reliably at home, work and along your regular routes.

International calling and international roaming are different benefits. The current descriptions list calling to at least 85 countries on Starter and more than 200 on higher tiers. Starter lists roaming in Canada and Mexico, while MAX and ALL ACCESS advertise roaming in more than 140 countries, subject to plan conditions.

If your household already owns compatible, unlocked phones, compare the promotion with Total MAX 5G BYO. The August 18 plan page listed four BYO lines at $105 per month with Auto Pay. That is not necessarily the cheapest option in every household, but it avoids accepting phones you may not want and makes it easier to compare service costs directly.

The free-phone offer is more compelling when all four people need replacements, the models meet their needs, and the household expects to stay on the qualifying plan. Assigning a high retail value to an unwanted budget phone can make the deal appear better than it is.
What if you change plans or cancel?
Total Wireless advertises service without contracts or early-termination penalties, but that does not eliminate promotional conditions. Changing plans can affect discounts, bundled benefits or eligibility, and customers moved from retired plans may not be able to return to them.

The phone-specific consequence—such as losing an unpaid promotional benefit, affecting unlocking eligibility or forfeiting a discount—must be checked in the exact offer terms. Do not rely on the general no-contract promise to assume that every promotional phone has no separate restriction.
Who should consider it?
It may fit you if:
- You genuinely need four lines and four replacement phones.
- You are comfortable with budget or midrange hardware.
- The qualifying plan works for your hotspot, roaming and streaming needs.
- Total Wireless’s Verizon-network coverage is suitable in your area.
- You can meet new-line, port-in and verification requirements.
- You expect to remain long enough for the service cost to justify the phones.
It may be a poor fit if:
- You already have four recent, unlocked phones.
- You want flagship cameras, gaming performance or premium displays.
- You are an existing Total Wireless customer seeking ordinary upgrades.
- You need extensive international roaming or faster hotspot performance.
- You are switching only briefly to obtain phones.
- The offer disappears from the cart or the final cost is higher than alternatives.
How to verify the deal at checkout
- Open the current Total Wireless deals page and select the phone offer.
- Confirm the promotion’s expiration date, qualifying plans and new-line requirements.
- Add all four lines and eligible phones in the same purchase flow if required.
- Check that each device shows the advertised $0 or promotional price.
- Review Auto Pay requirements, taxes, fees, SIM or activation charges and the recurring monthly total.
- Open the unlocking policy and the terms and conditions before paying.
- Save screenshots or a copy of the offer terms and final cart.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Total Wireless really did advertise four free phones, but the January 2026 offer was conditional, time-limited and easy to confuse with a separate four-line pricing promotion. Treat it as worthwhile only if the live cart confirms all four phones, the qualifying plan and the complete after-tax cost—and only if you would be happy with the phones and service without the headline.
