Wyze announced a $110 million funding raise on July 30, 2021, saying it would invest in artificial intelligence for its cameras while expanding products and improving customer service, shipping and internal processes. Five years later, Wyze has added natural-language video search and AI alert features—but its advanced AI is part of a paid, cloud-dependent service strategy, and a 2024 incident exposed some customers’ camera thumbnails to other users. The result is a real AI expansion, with costs and trust risks that matter as much as the feature list.
What Wyze announced in 2021—and what it did not disclose
GeekWire reported on July 30, 2021, that Kirkland, Washington-based Wyze Labs had raised $110 million. At the time, the company offered more than 30 products, including cameras, robot vacuums, thermostats, lamps, sprinklers and smartwatches. Wyze said it planned to put more money into camera AI, improve products and launch new ones, and strengthen customer service, shipping and internal operations. GeekWire’s report is the source for the amount and stated plans.
The announcement did not identify the investors or a lead investor, state a valuation, specify whether the financing was equity, debt or a combination, or disclose how much would go to AI versus operations. It also did not give revenue, dilution, runway or measurable product milestones. The $110 million figure is therefore a reported raise, not enough information to calculate what the investment meant for existing owners or how efficiently it was spent.
Wyze said its cameras already supported person, vehicle, package and pet detection, and that it was developing additional AI capabilities. The strategic logic was straightforward: inexpensive hardware can attract buyers, but detection and search features can make cameras more useful—and ongoing cloud processing and storage can support recurring service revenue.

From on-device detection to cloud-connected AI features
AI in a camera can run on the device, in the cloud, or through a combination of both. On-device, or edge, processing can reduce the need to send video elsewhere and may respond quickly, but it is constrained by the camera’s computing resources. Cloud processing offers more flexibility, but depends on internet access, account security and the provider’s continuing infrastructure. It also creates ongoing costs for computing and storage. Wyze’s later features should not all be assumed to work locally: the location of processing can differ by feature, and the available product descriptions do not establish that every current AI function runs on the camera.
Wyze had an earlier example of edge AI. In 2019, it partnered with Xnor.ai to bring person detection to certain cameras through a firmware update; the companies described the system as running on-device. That was a specific implementation, not evidence that all Wyze AI features use the same approach. The partnership announcement provides the details.

- August 28, 2024: Wyze announced AI Video Search, which lets users search recorded footage with text descriptions. Examples include finding people, animals, vehicles, packages, colors and objects, or a more specific scene such as a delivery person carrying red roses. Wyze says the feature uses an internally developed Vision Language Model trained for Wyze camera use cases. Its claims about model speed are Wyze’s, not independently verified performance results. Wyze’s announcement describes the feature.
- March 26, 2025: Wyze announced an AI Notifications Filter, also called the NBD (“no big deal”) filter. It ranks events from one to five and is intended to quiet routine or low-priority alerts while surfacing events Wyze considers more important, such as glass breaking or an unknown person lingering near a door. The company’s examples and explanation are in its feature announcement.
These features address different problems. A basic notification says that motion occurred; object detection may identify a person; a descriptive alert aims to add context about what the camera believes is happening. Search can help locate a relevant moment in a recording without scrubbing through clips. Notification ranking tries to reduce alert fatigue. None turns a camera’s interpretation into verified fact. Poor lighting, distance, camera angle, obstruction, compression or model error can lead to incomplete or incorrect descriptions. Filtering also involves a trade-off: fewer nuisance notifications may mean a user misses an event the system assigned low priority.
AI is also part of Wyze’s subscription business
Wyze’s current U.S. plan pages place its most advanced camera AI behind recurring fees. Prices below are those listed on Wyze’s official pages as of August 18, 2026; prices and features can change.

Pro is compatible with most Wyze cameras but excludes Wyze Cam v1, Wyze Video Doorbell v1, and Wyze Cam Outdoor v1 and v2. Check the precise model and service terms before subscribing. Wyze says Pro can be subscribed to outside the United States, but emergency dispatch is geographically restricted; it should not be treated as equivalent to a professionally installed alarm service without reviewing the applicable terms and response process.

The annual Cam Plus price also illustrates why the ongoing cost deserves attention. Wyze’s January 30, 2026 support notice said the U.S. annual price would rise from $19.99 to $29.99 for renewals on or after March 2, 2026; the monthly price remained $2.99. What subscriptions add up to
The table below shows the subscription portion only, using the listed annual rates and assuming those rates remain unchanged. It excludes camera purchases, tax, any optional add-ons and future price changes. Cam Plus is priced per camera; Cam Unlimited and Pro cover unlimited cameras, so those plans’ subscription totals do not rise with camera count.

This is not a prediction of future bills: it is a simple comparison at the listed annual prices. In this example, Cam Unlimited’s flat rate becomes cheaper than paying annual Cam Plus for more than three cameras; Pro costs more because it includes the advanced AI tier and other services. A buyer who only wants basic viewing may not need either unlimited plan. Wyze says cameras can provide live streaming and local recording with a microSD card without a subscription, while advanced detections and cloud services require a plan; see its camera setup and feature information. Local recording does not make a camera cloud-independent if other functions still rely on Wyze’s account or services.

For a real ownership comparison, add the cost of the cameras and any storage cards, then decide which paid features are genuinely valuable. A low purchase price can be offset over several years by a plan, particularly when fees are charged per camera. Conversely, a household with several cameras may find an unlimited plan more predictable than stacking per-camera subscriptions.

In February 2024, Wyze acknowledged that approximately 13,000 users received thumbnails from cameras that were not their own. CBS News reported that 1,504 users tapped those thumbnails; some could view enlarged images or event videos belonging to other customers. According to the company’s explanation, an outage and a third-party caching library contributed to incorrect device- and user-ID mapping. This was not reported as a deliberate hack, and the reporting does not establish that every customer’s live feed was exposed. But it was a serious privacy incident involving images from customers’ homes. CBS News’ account details the reported exposure.

That history matters when evaluating cloud-connected AI. Searching footage and generating descriptions can be convenient, but customers are trusting the service with sensitive video, account access and event data. Before buying, consider account security and sharing controls, how cloud retention works, the incident history, and whether the features you want require remote services. AI capability and security maturity are separate questions.

Who may find Wyze worthwhile—and who should pause
Wyze may suit budget-conscious buyers who want a low-cost entry point, already use its app or devices, and are comfortable with an account-based service and optional subscription. A single-camera owner who values cloud detections might find Cam Plus sufficient; multi-camera households can compare the flat-rate Unlimited option; people who specifically want natural-language search and descriptive alerts need to examine Pro and confirm camera compatibility.
Pause if your main requirement is local-only video, no recurring fees, professionally monitored security, or a provider with a different privacy and support profile. Wyze’s emergency-dispatch feature should not be assumed to provide the same service, availability or response guarantees as a traditional alarm provider. Also check model support before purchasing a plan: older devices may not qualify for the newest features.
For any connected camera, budget for the full service period rather than judging it by hardware price alone. Wyze’s inexpensive devices can be used for some basic functions without a plan, but its more ambitious AI features are part of a subscription platform. Its 2021 funding announcement signaled that direction; it did not reveal the investment terms or prove, by itself, that AI would create a durable business. The features delivered since then show meaningful progress, while recurring costs, cloud dependence and the 2024 privacy failure remain central to the value calculation.
