Shopify is usually better when selling products is the core business. It is built around inventory, checkout, orders, payments, sales channels, retail, reporting, and integrations. Wix is usually better when the website comes first—for example, a service business, portfolio, restaurant, creator, consultant, or local company with a modest product range.

Neither platform is automatically cheaper, easier, or better for SEO. The right choice depends on your catalog, sales volume, payment provider, physical locations, international ambitions, required apps, and the amount of content your website needs.

Wix vs Shopify at a glance

For the shortest answer: choose Wix for a website-led business and Shopify for a commerce-led business. The rest of this comparison explains when that rule breaks down.

The core difference: website builder versus ecommerce platform

Wix is website-first

Wix is a general-purpose website builder with ecommerce capabilities. Its drag-and-drop editor is designed around pages, sections, images, content, forms, bookings, blogs, events, and branding—not just products and orders. Wix promotes more than 900 customizable templates and combines store functions with marketing, CRM-style tools, SEO controls, loyalty, and content features.

That makes Wix attractive when a customer needs to understand the business before buying. A consultant might need service pages, case studies, appointment booking, and a few digital products. A restaurant may need menus, location information, reservations, and online ordering. A creator may need a portfolio, blog, email capture, memberships, and merchandise.

Wix also allows users to build and test a store for free, although accepting payments requires upgrading to a Premium or business plan. See Wix’s current ecommerce plan and feature page for availability and regional pricing.

Shopify is ecommerce-first

Shopify starts with the store operation: products, variants, checkout, payments, orders, inventory, shipping, customers, analytics, and sales channels. It does provide themes, pages, blogs, domains, and content tools, but the platform’s logic is oriented around selling and managing products.

This distinction matters more as the business grows. Shopify is often easier to operate when a team must repeatedly process orders, synchronize inventory, manage several channels, handle returns, work across locations, or connect specialist tools. Shopify describes its platform as being specialized in ecommerce and retail; its Wix comparison outlines its commerce, app, retail, and international positioning.

Pricing: compare total cost, not just the advertised plan

Pricing snapshot: the Shopify figures below are US prices supplied for August 18, 2026. Yearly-billing equivalents are shown separately from monthly billing. Prices, promotions, payment rates, and feature availability can vary by country and may change, so confirm the live pricing page before purchasing.

Shopify plan Billed monthly Equivalent when billed yearly Typical fit
Basic $39/month $29/month Solo entrepreneurs and smaller product-first stores
Grow $105/month $79/month Small teams and growing operations
Advanced $399/month $299/month International or operationally complex businesses
Plus From $2,300/month No standard annual equivalent displayed Complex and enterprise-level businesses
POS Pro +$89/month per location — Advanced physical-retail workflows

These figures come from Shopify’s US pricing page. Shopify’s public Wix-related ecommerce page confirms Core, Business, and Business Elite tiers, but does not provide one stable universal Wix price in the supplied material. Wix pricing varies by geography, billing term, promotion, and product edition. Do not compare a Wix website-only plan with a Shopify plan that supports payments and selling.

Your real annual cost is closer to:

Annual platform cost
+ payment-processing fees
+ platform transaction fees
+ paid apps
+ premium theme or template costs
+ email and SMS marketing
+ shipping software
+ tax software
+ POS hardware and subscriptions
+ migration or developer costs

A lower subscription price can become more expensive if you need several paid apps. Conversely, Shopify’s higher subscription cost may replace separate inventory, channel, reporting, fulfillment, or POS tools.

Payments and transaction fees

Shopify’s displayed US online card rates start at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. The same pricing page lists an additional third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus when a third-party payment provider is used.

These are separate charges. A payment processor’s card fee is not the same as Shopify’s platform surcharge. Rates can vary by country, card type, currency, plan, payment setup, and international transaction. Shopify Payments is not available everywhere, and wallet or PayPal rates may differ from standard card rates.

Wix also separates its platform subscription from payment processing. Wix Payments availability, third-party gateways, rates, and any country-specific fees depend on the merchant’s location and configuration. Confirm the details for your country rather than relying on a universal “no transaction fee” claim.

Estimate fees using your own numbers:

Estimated processing cost =
(number of orders × fixed fee)
+ (gross payment volume × percentage fee)
+ platform surcharge
+ currency-conversion or international fees

Run the calculation for a low-volume store with a low average order value, a moderate domestic store, and a high-volume or international store. A plan with a lower percentage rate is not automatically cheaper if its subscription is substantially higher.

Ease of use and design

Wix is generally easier for visually building a broad website. You can arrange ordinary pages, landing pages, galleries, editorial sections, and branded content with considerable freedom. That flexibility is useful, but it can also produce inconsistent layouts if the site lacks a design system.

Shopify is more structured. Products, collections, orders, inventory, shipping, and sales channels follow a clearer commerce model. That may feel less flexible when designing a content-heavy site, but it creates a repeatable operating system as the catalog and team expand.

The useful distinction is not “Wix is easy and Shopify is hard.” It is:

  • Wix is often easier for designing the website.
  • Shopify is often easier for running a serious product business.

Wix offers drag-and-drop editing and visual product-page customization. Shopify uses a more structured theme architecture, but developers can customize themes with Liquid, apps, APIs, or headless implementations. Shopify also says merchants can change themes without starting over.

Ecommerce capabilities

Products and catalogs

Wix’s current ecommerce page advertises up to 50,000 products on Core, Business, and Business Elite tiers. Shopify lists unlimited products across its standard plans. A product-count limit alone does not establish operational equivalence: variants, bulk editing, custom fields, bundles, subscriptions, B2B pricing, reviews, gift cards, imports, exports, and fulfillment workflows may matter more than the headline number.

Before choosing, list every required catalog function and mark whether it is native, available through a paid add-on, or requires custom development.

Inventory and fulfillment

Shopify is the stronger default for multi-channel inventory, multiple locations, barcode-based workflows, warehouse integrations, purchase orders, low-stock management, returns, exchanges, and specialized fulfillment. Its displayed Basic comparison includes 10 inventory locations, while higher plans or additional tools provide more advanced capabilities.

Wix advertises inventory synchronization across sales channels and inventory-management tools. However, verify exact limits for warehouses, locations, bundles, kits, overselling protection, and marketplace synchronization before committing to a complex operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checkout and orders

Shopify lists checkout, abandoned-checkout recovery, fraud analysis, discounts, gift cards, and local payment methods among its features, with some capabilities dependent on Shopify Payments or higher plans. It is usually the better fit when checkout rules, order processing, returns, and channel management are central daily tasks.

Shopify markets a claim that its checkout converts 15% better. That is a Shopify-reported marketing claim, not an independent industry benchmark, so it should not be treated as proof that every Shopify store will outperform every Wix store.

Compare the specific checkout requirements: guest checkout, express payments, buy-now-pay-later options, taxes, shipping calculations, fraud controls, abandoned-cart recovery, and the ability to customize the checkout at your required plan level.

Marketing, content, and SEO

Wix is a natural fit for content-led acquisition. Its ecommerce page advertises page-level SEO controls, URL-slug and meta-tag editing, AI-assisted SEO tag generation, bulk optimization, Google Search Console integration, analytics, email marketing, CRM functions, coupons, and loyalty tools.

Shopify provides strong ecommerce SEO foundations: product and collection architecture, sitemaps, redirects, robots controls, blog support, structured integrations, and a large ecosystem of SEO, schema, review, merchandising, and analytics apps. Shopify’s SEO documentation covers crawling, site structure, keywords, sitemaps, redirects, and related controls.

Neither platform automatically ranks better. Search performance depends on useful content, search intent, site architecture, page speed, Core Web Vitals, internal links, backlinks, structured data, product demand, and execution. Choose the platform whose editing and technical workflow your team can maintain consistently.

Multichannel and international selling

Shopify is generally the stronger choice when international or multichannel sales are a core strategy. Its ecosystem supports channels such as TikTok, Instagram, Etsy, Amazon, and other marketplaces, while its plan comparison lists storefront translation, local currencies, Shopify Markets, local payment methods, local domains, and duties and tax tools.

Availability and requirements vary. Some international features depend on Shopify Payments, plan level, or geography. Confirm supported countries, currencies, tax rules, domains, shipping services, and payment gateways for your target markets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wix advertises marketplace and social selling, cross-border shipping, live shipping rates, multiple currencies, and inventory synchronization. It can be sufficient when international selling is secondary to a branded website, but verify the exact supported markets and country-specific limits.

POS and physical retail

Shopify is the safer choice for businesses operating online and in physical locations. It supports in-person selling on standard plans and offers POS Pro for an additional $89 per month per location in the supplied US pricing snapshot. Advanced retail requirements may include unified inventory, staff roles, pickup, delivery, barcode workflows, receipts, refunds, location management, and retail reporting.

Wix can support in-person and multichannel selling, but “POS available” does not prove that its hardware, offline behavior, staff permissions, returns, receipts, inventory synchronization, and reporting match Shopify’s retail workflows. Compare the exact hardware and staff process before selecting Wix for a store with substantial physical sales.

Apps, integrations, and customization

Shopify advertises integrations with thousands of apps through its ecommerce-focused marketplace. This is valuable for subscriptions, reviews, loyalty, B2B pricing, advanced shipping, fulfillment, marketplaces, analytics, and unusual workflows. It also creates costs and risks: recurring app fees, duplicated functionality, integration conflicts, performance issues, vendor dependency, and ongoing maintenance.

Wix includes more functionality directly across website building, SEO, marketing, CRM, loyalty, content, and ecommerce. That can reduce the number of services a simple business needs. Its trade-off is that some specialized commerce workflows may have fewer or less mature extensions.

For either platform, create a must-have list and label each function native, paid add-on, external integration, or custom development. This prevents an attractive feature list from hiding the implementation cost.

Analytics and reporting

Shopify should lead for product businesses that need sales and product reports, customer analysis, inventory reporting, channel-level performance, operational dashboards, and increasingly detailed analytics. Shopify’s current comparison advertises more than 200 real-time reports plus custom analytics, but reporting depth differs by plan.

Wix provides site analytics and reports, with advanced analytics and customized reports on higher tiers. It is often sufficient for a small website-led business, but a retailer should confirm whether its required inventory, cohort, channel, margin, and operational reports are available without extra tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosting, security, and support

Both are hosted platforms. Merchants generally do not manage web servers, SSL installation, database administration, routine infrastructure updates, or core platform security themselves.

Shopify lists hosting, a custom domain, and a free SSL certificate as included features. Wix advertises multi-cloud hosting, PCI DSS Level 1 compliance, and 24/7/365 threat protection; these are vendor-reported claims. Both companies advertise 24/7 support, but channels, response times, plan entitlements, and regional availability may differ. Shopify lists live chat on its displayed plans and enhanced or priority support on higher tiers; Wix advertises chat or scheduled calls.

Should you move from Wix to Shopify?

Switch when you can identify a concrete limitation that affects revenue or operations—for example, inventory synchronization, retail locations, international checkout, reporting, fulfillment, B2B pricing, or a required integration.

Do not switch merely because Shopify is described as “more professional,” because of an unverified SEO claim, or because a lower payment rate looks attractive before calculating the higher subscription and migration costs.

Migration checklist

  • Products, variants, images, custom fields, and categories
  • Customers and account records
  • Orders and refunds
  • Reviews, gift cards, subscriptions, and discount codes
  • Pages, blog posts, images, and media
  • SEO titles, descriptions, canonical settings, and alt text
  • URL structures and 301 redirects
  • Analytics history, tax settings, shipping rules, and fulfillment connections

Shopify says its basic CSV process can import products and customers, but not every data type, including orders and blog posts. Broader transfers may require migration apps, partners, or manual rebuilding. Treat migration as a project rather than a one-click switch.

For SEO, create a URL map, preserve valuable URLs where possible, implement 301 redirects, update internal links, submit the new sitemap, check indexing, and monitor Search Console after launch. Test checkout, payments, taxes, shipping, email notifications, customer accounts, and order fulfillment before changing the live domain.

Scenario-based recommendations

Choose Wix when the website is the main product

  • You are a consultant, agency, creator, restaurant, local business, or service provider.
  • You need rich pages, portfolio content, bookings, events, lead generation, or a blog.
  • You sell a modest catalog and do not need specialized retail workflows.
  • You prefer visual control and built-in marketing tools over a large app stack.
  • Your sales are mainly domestic and direct to consumer.

Choose Shopify when commerce is the main operation

  • Products, orders, inventory, and fulfillment are the center of the business.
  • You expect catalog, order volume, staff, or sales channels to grow.
  • You sell through marketplaces, social channels, physical locations, or multiple markets.
  • You need detailed reports, specialist apps, custom integrations, or developer support.
  • You are willing to pay for a commerce-first operating system.

Choose either for a small first store—but calculate first

A modest store can work on either platform. Wix may offer a more comfortable website-building experience, while Shopify Basic may be preferable if operational ecommerce features are already the priority. Compare the minimum plan, payment provider, required apps, annual billing commitment, and migration implications—not just the introductory price.

Final decision checklist

  1. Is the business primarily content and services, or products and orders?
  2. How many products, variants, bundles, and subscriptions do you need?
  3. What monthly order volume and average order value do you expect?
  4. Which payment provider is available in your country?
  5. Do you need multiple warehouses, locations, or physical retail?
  6. Which apps or integrations are mandatory?
  7. Do you need B2B, wholesale, subscriptions, loyalty, or advanced product options?
  8. Are international currencies, domains, translations, taxes, and local payments essential?
  9. What reports must the owner or team see every week?
  10. What data, URLs, reviews, orders, and blog content must migrate?
  11. What is the acceptable total monthly software cost after apps and services?
  12. Can the team maintain the chosen platform without constant developer help?
