Yes—Windows 10’s retirement helped produce a genuine PC replacement wave in late 2025. IDC figures cited by HotHardware put worldwide PC shipments at 75.8 million in the third quarter, up 9.4% from a year earlier. Lenovo was the standout: its reported global share rose from 23.8% to 25.5%.
That does not mean every additional computer was bought by a household upgrading to Windows 11, or that Lenovo is automatically the best choice for every buyer. The data measure shipments into the channel, and the deadline likely pulled forward business refreshes, distributor orders and replacement purchases that might otherwise have happened later.
The deadline created a forced decision
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. PCs did not stop working on that date. However, unsupported installations no longer receive normal operating-system security updates, quality fixes, feature updates or Microsoft technical support. Microsoft also warns that antivirus software alone is not a substitute for operating-system patches.

- Compatible PCs: They could generally be upgraded to Windows 11 without buying new hardware.
- Incompatible or aging PCs: Owners had to replace them, accept the risks of unsupported Windows 10, enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) if eligible, or move to another operating system.
- Business fleets: Organizations often refresh hundreds or thousands of machines in procurement waves, making a support deadline a significant budgeting and purchasing event.
Specialized editions—including some Enterprise, Education, IoT and Long-Term Servicing Channel products—can have different lifecycles. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 continue receiving security updates until October 10, 2028, but that does not extend Windows 10’s own security support.

What the PC-market numbers show
The following are IDC figures reported by HotHardware, not a directly linked IDC table. “Shipments” generally means units entering the distribution channel; it is not identical to retail sell-through or computers activated by end users in the same quarter.

Another HotHardware index entry cited a separate Counterpoint estimate of 8.1% annual growth for the quarter. That difference is a reminder not to combine tracker estimates: firms use different shipment definitions, regional coverage and treatment of device categories.
Why Lenovo appears to have benefited most
Lenovo remained the global leader and gained 1.7 percentage points in the cited figures while Dell’s share fell from 14.2% to 13.3%. That is meaningful relative outperformance during a market expansion, but it is not proof that Lenovo caused the boom or that its products are universally superior.

The rebound was uneven—and may be temporary
HotHardware reported double-digit growth in Japan and China, while North America grew more slowly. Tariffs and broader economic uncertainty were counterforces in North America. IDC commentary cited in that report suggested demand for Windows 11-ready systems could continue into 2026, but a deadline-driven cycle can also create a later pause.
Several forces can inflate a quarter’s shipment total:
- Companies replacing unsupported fleets earlier than planned.
- OEMs and distributors building inventory before the deadline.
- Channel restocking or purchases made ahead of tariff and supply uncertainty.
- Regional procurement timing rather than a permanent increase in household PC usage.
In other words, the 9.4% increase demonstrates a strong shipment surge, not a permanent reset in underlying PC demand.
What should a Windows 10 owner do?
- Check official compatibility. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions. A fast-feeling PC can still fail because its processor is unsupported, TPM 2.0 is disabled, Secure Boot is unavailable, firmware is in legacy BIOS mode, or drivers are unsuitable.
- Upgrade in place when it makes financial sense. Do this when the machine passes the check, has an SSD and adequate memory, has acceptable battery and thermals, and your applications and peripherals are compatible. Back up important data first.
- Use ESU as a bridge, not a permanent plan. Microsoft’s consumer program generally requires Windows 10 version 22H2 and an eligible personal device. Coverage runs through October 13, 2026. Microsoft lists enrollment through settings synchronization at no additional cost, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30 U.S. payment, subject to regional, account, tax and eligibility rules. ESU adds security coverage; it does not add features, improve speed or provide a new hardware warranty.
- Replace the computer when the hardware is the problem. Replacement is usually better if the processor or security hardware is unsupported, the battery, screen, keyboard or storage is failing, the device is slow under Windows 10, or repairs plus ESU approach the cost of a suitable new system.
- Consider another operating system only if your workflow allows it. Linux can extend hardware life, but application, driver, support and training requirements make it unsuitable as a drop-in solution for every Windows-dependent user.
Unsupported Windows 11 installation workarounds may leave a device outside Microsoft’s supported configuration and should not be treated as the normal recommendation.

How to choose a replacement PC
Lenovo’s market-share gain is not a buying verdict. Compare the specific model, not just the logo. Check:
- Warranty duration, onsite service and accidental-damage terms.
- Business versus consumer support and repairability.
- RAM and SSD capacity, upgradeability and storage access.
- Battery life, display quality, keyboard, webcam and microphone.
- USB-C charging, ports, docking compatibility and Wi-Fi generation.
- Windows 11 Home versus Pro, depending on management and security needs.
- Total cost, including support plans, accessories and data migration.
Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface and Apple all serve different price and use cases. Current prices, stock and model specifications change, so verify them on the manufacturer’s page before buying. Lenovo’s official store is at Lenovo.com; HP’s at HP.com; and Dell’s at Dell.com.

A free Windows 11 upgrade can be the lowest-cost option when the existing computer is healthy. ESU can buy time, but calculate its limited coverage period against the cost of a replacement, expected repairs and the value of your data and downtime. If a business is replacing a fleet, compare the hardware price with deployment labor, warranties, device management and disposal costs—not merely the advertised laptop price.

Microsoft points users toward manufacturer and retailer trade-in and recycling programs, whose availability varies by location. Before disposal, back up data, sign out of accounts and securely erase the drive; organizations may need a certified asset-disposition process.
