Yes, your Facebook friends may see items you sell on Marketplace unless you enable Hide from friends. That setting usually keeps an eligible listing from appearing to your current friends on Facebook and Messenger, but it does not make the sale completely private.
Meta says a hidden listing may still be visible to logged-out users, former friends, friends of friends, and external search engines. Treat it as a way to reduce visibility—not as a guarantee that nobody you know will find the item.
What happens when you sell on Marketplace?
Without Hide from friends, your listing is part of Facebook Marketplace’s broader selling system. A friend might encounter it while browsing Marketplace, searching for an item, receiving a recommendation, or viewing something you shared.
That does not mean Facebook automatically pushes every listing into every friend’s News Feed or sends every friend a direct notification. Visibility depends on Facebook’s current surfaces, recommendations, searches, location, and sharing. However, you should assume that friends may discover a non-hidden listing.

What “Hide from friends” actually does
Hide from friends is a listing-level control. It does not change the privacy of your entire Facebook account or make your Marketplace activity invisible.
When enabled for an eligible listing, it is intended to:

- Prevent the listing from generating notifications to those friends.
It does not:
- Make the listing visible only to selected buyers.
- Prevent non-friends from finding it.
- Remove you from Marketplace or hide your broader Marketplace presence.
- Remove every previous share or preview.
- Make the listing invisible to search engines or people who are logged out.
How to hide a new Marketplace listing
- Open Facebook and go to Marketplace.
- Choose Create new listing or Sell.
- Select Item for sale.
- Add the photos, title, price, category, description, and location.
- Find the Hide from friends toggle in the listing form.
- Turn it on, review the listing, and publish it.
Facebook frequently changes labels and layouts, so the control may be placed differently on mobile, desktop, or different accounts. Meta’s current help guidance describes enabling the option while creating the listing: Meta’s Marketplace listing instructions.
How to hide an existing listing
- Open Marketplace.
- Go to Selling or Your listings.
- Find the item and open its Options or three-dot menu.
- Choose Edit listing.
- Look for Hide from friends, turn it on, and save.
If you cannot see the option immediately, search through the full Edit listing form. If it is still absent, the category, country, account, or current Facebook interface may not support the control.

When friends may still see a hidden listing
Meta describes several important exceptions. A friend—or someone you know—could still encounter the item when:
- They are logged out: The listing may remain visible to people who are not signed in to Facebook or Messenger.
- They use an external search engine: Marketplace listings may appear in results on Google or other websites.
- They are a former friend: Unfriending someone does not necessarily prevent them from seeing a hidden listing.
- They are a friend of a friend: The setting is not a general “hide from everyone I know” control.
- You shared it before hiding it: An old Messenger preview may remain visible, and a Story preview may remain until the Story expires—potentially for up to 24 hours.
- The item was posted in a group: Group listings follow different rules and may be visible to members who are also your friends.
If discretion matters, avoid putting identifying information in the photos, background, description, or pickup details. A hidden listing can still reveal clues about you even when the Marketplace page itself is not shown to current friends.
Buy-and-sell groups work differently
Listings created directly in Facebook buy-and-sell groups cannot be hidden from friends in the same way. If you enable hiding on a Marketplace listing that was also posted to a group, Meta says it may be removed from that group.
This creates a direct trade-off: local groups may offer strong access to nearby buyers, but they provide less control over whether friends see the sale. Read Meta’s group and visibility guidance before relying on the setting.
Can you hide vehicles, homes, or property listings?
Meta’s localized help guidance says the control may be limited to item listings and may not be available for vehicles, homes, apartments, or other property categories. Rules can vary by country, account, category, and Facebook version.
Check the listing form itself. If Hide from friends does not appear for a vehicle or property listing, do not assume that the item can be hidden. See Meta’s category-specific guidance.

Do not assume that a previously hidden item stays hidden forever:
- Renewed listing: Meta says the original hide setting carries over, although you can change it.
- Relisted item: Meta says hiding is automatically turned off, so you must check and enable it again.
This is an easy privacy failure: an old listing may be hidden, while a newly relisted version is visible to friends.
Does hiding the listing reduce your audience?
Usually, yes in practical terms. Hiding removes or reduces access for current friends and may prevent group posting or remove the listing from a group. That can reduce the number of potential buyers, particularly when friends are also local Marketplace shoppers.
- More discretion: Turn on Hide from friends, avoid groups, and do not share the listing publicly.
- More exposure: Leave the setting off and consider relevant local groups, accepting that friends may discover it.
- A compromise: Keep it hidden from friends, use Marketplace’s ordinary audience, and send the listing privately to selected contacts when appropriate.
If a friend says they saw the item
Check these possibilities before assuming the control failed:
- Was the listing created or shared in a buy-and-sell group?
- Was the item relisted rather than renewed?
- Did you share it in Messenger, a Story, a post, or a comment before hiding it?
- Is the viewer a former friend or a friend of a friend?
- Did the person view it while logged out?
- Is the listing for a vehicle or property category that does not offer the control?
Also remember that friends may see the surrounding text of a post or comment even if Facebook hides the Marketplace listing itself. Avoid sharing sensitive sales publicly if the wording, location, or photos could identify you.
