Uber acquired Seattle-based Mighty AI on June 25, 2019, to bring data-labeling software and expertise into its self-driving division, Advanced Technologies Group (ATG). The purchase price was not disclosed. Mighty AI did not build cars or operate robotaxis: it helped prepare the labeled sensor data used to train computer-vision systems.

What Uber acquired

Mighty AI supplied software, intellectual property, labeling workflows and specialist talent for turning images, video and other sensor data into material that machine-learning systems could use. More than 40 Mighty AI employees joined Uber’s Seattle engineering office as a team within ATG, and Mighty AI CEO Daryn Nakhuda joined Uber. GeekWire reported that President Isaac Kato did not. The acquisition report said the financial terms were not disclosed.

Mighty AI had started as Spare5, a 2014 spinout associated with Madrona Venture Labs, and relaunched under the Mighty AI name in 2017 with a stronger emphasis on training data. Its work served computer-vision projects in fields beyond automotive, including retail and agriculture. The company had reportedly raised about $27 million; that figure is reported funding, not the undisclosed acquisition price.

Why data labeling matters in autonomous driving

A self-driving vehicle’s cameras, lidar and other sensors produce large volumes of raw recordings. To train a perception model, developers need examples that identify what is in those recordings and where it is: a cyclist beside a car, a pedestrian partly hidden by a parked van, a traffic sign, or a road boundary. Annotation tools and human reviewers attach those labels, check them and organize the resulting data for model training and evaluation.

#1 Best Overall
TIER IV C1 Camera for Autonomous Driving, HDR, 2.5MP, Remote Monitoring, Autoware, GMSL2, IP69K, Angle Lens, C1 Camera for Autonomous Vehicles (C1-046)
  • High dynamic range (HDR): With a dynamic range of 120dB, the camera can capture scenes with a large difference in brightness without crushing shadows or overexposing highlights.
  • High sensitivity, low noise and high resolution: It features noise suppression, enabling it to capture high-quality images, even in low-light environments.
  • LED flicker mitigation: The camera reduces flickering from LED light sources, including traffic signals, traffic signs, headlights, and taillights.
  • Device drivers support wide-platform compatibility: Offering seamless integration to accelerate efficient development by multi-ECU and SoC connectivity with device drivers.
  • GMSL2 interface: The GMSL2 interface allows for long-distance signal transmission and power supply over a single cable connection.
  1. Collect sensor recordings. Vehicles capture scenes using cameras, lidar, radar and other equipment.
  2. Annotate relevant objects and events. Software can assist, while people review or correct labels and resolve ambiguous cases.
  3. Use the labeled examples. Engineers train and evaluate perception models, then investigate errors and add useful examples to the development cycle.

That pipeline can help a team iterate faster, especially when it can find and process unusual situations. But annotation is an enabling layer, not a self-driving system. Accurate labels do not by themselves solve prediction, route planning, vehicle control, safety validation, regulation or the practical work of operating a fleet.

Quality and coverage matter as much as volume. Reviewers may disagree about an occluded pedestrian or an unusual vehicle; labels created for one company’s taxonomy may not fit another’s; rare safety-critical situations may be hard to collect; and sensor timing or calibration problems can undermine otherwise careful annotations. If automated pre-labeling has a systematic error and human review misses it, the error can spread through a dataset. More labeled data is not automatically better data.

Why Uber wanted Mighty AI

Uber said it planned to combine Mighty AI’s platform and expertise with ATG’s existing labeling-automation work to train AI more quickly. The strategic logic was control and speed: a dedicated team and tooling could help turn the large amount of driving data into training material more efficiently. How much the acquisition actually changed ATG’s technical performance is not publicly measurable from the reported deal details.

Rank #2
TIER IV GMSL2 USB 3.0 Converter for Autonomous Driving, Remote Monitoring, Autoware, GMSL2, IP69K, Compatible with C1 and C2 Cameras for Autonomous Vehicles
  • The factory setting is C1 freerun mode (30fps). A firmware update is required in order to use this product with the C2 Camera. The firmware can be downloaded from the support page on the official website.
  • USB power supply: No additional power supply is needed, the USB interface will supply the power.
  • Standard UVC protocol: Works with Windows, Mac and Linux without the need to install dedicated drivers. Note: This product is incompatible with Raspberry Pi.
  • External synchronization: The camera exposure can be controlled by an external trigger pulse, enabling users to synchronize with another camera or LiDAR.
  • Cables are not included.

The purchase also fit a larger investment in ATG. Uber’s 2019 SEC filing described a $1 billion investment in the unit from Toyota, DENSO and SoftBank. After the transaction, Uber held an 86.2% fully diluted stake and the investors held 13.8%, implying a $7.25 billion post-investment valuation for ATG. Mighty AI was one component of that broader autonomy effort, not the whole strategy.

At the time, Uber was testing autonomous vehicles and had ambitious public-road deployment plans. Those were goals, not proof that a commercial robotaxi service was ready. A data-labeling acquisition could strengthen one part of model development; it could not guarantee safe performance, regulatory approval or a viable service.

What the deal did not mean

Public descriptions of the transaction center on annotation technology, tooling, intellectual property, employees and a labeling community. They do not describe Uber buying a complete autonomous-driving stack, a vehicle platform, a lidar or radar manufacturer, or a robotaxi fleet. Nor was the purchase a demonstrated solution to the hardest autonomy problems. The purchase price and detailed allocation of acquired assets were not made public.

  • OAK-D W is the ultimate camera for robotic vision that perceives the world like a human by combining a wide stereo depth camera and wide high-resolution color camera with an on-device Neural Network inferencing and Computer Vision capabilities. It uses USB-C for both power and USB3 connectivity.

The deal also changed the experience for Mighty AI’s outside customers. GeekWire reported that clients—including Samsung, Microsoft, Intel, Accenture and Siemens—were told the company’s operations would shut down following the acquisition. That suggests the transaction was an absorption of capability into Uber, rather than a continuation of Mighty AI as an independent multi-client vendor. An acquisition can give the buyer tighter control while leaving existing customers needing another provider.

What happened to ATG—and what that says about the deal

Uber announced in December 2020 that Aurora would acquire ATG; the acquisition was completed in January 2021. Uber also announced a $400 million investment in Aurora and a continuing partnership. Aurora’s later filing described the acquired ATG people and technology joining its autonomous-driving program and reported $1.916 billion as the fair value of consideration transferred. Uber’s announcement and Aurora’s filing document the later transaction.

That corporate outcome places Mighty AI’s technology and talent within the broader history of ATG, which moved to Aurora. It does not establish whether the Mighty AI integration succeeded or failed: public information does not isolate its contribution, and Uber’s later sale of ATG is not itself evidence about that acquisition’s technical value.

TIER IV C2 Camera for Autonomous Driving, HDR, 5.4MP, Remote Monitoring, Autoware, GMSL2, IP69K, C2 Camera for Autonomous Vehicles (C2-176)
  • High dynamic range (HDR): With a dynamic range of 120dB, the camera can capture scenes with a large difference in brightness without crushing shadows or overexposing highlights.
  • High sensitivity, low noise and high resolution: C2 maintains the same high sensitivity and low noise as C1, and extends its resolution up to 5.4MP, enabling object recognition at greater distances and capturing a wider field of view.
  • LED flicker mitigation: The camera reduces flickering from LED light sources, including traffic signals, traffic signs, headlights, and taillights.
  • Autoware compatibility: Fully compatible with Autoware, the open-source operating system for autonomous driving.
  • GMSL2 interface: The GMSL2 interface allows for long-distance signal transmission and power supply over a single cable connection.

The 2019 deal is best understood as an infrastructure-and-talent acquisition during a period of heavy investment and consolidation in autonomous vehicles. Specialized data operations had strategic value because machine-learning systems depend on useful training examples. But the acquisition was a bet on making one part of development more effective—not a shortcut to a driverless-car business.

Uber’s later activity also should not be confused with owning ATG. The company continues to describe data annotation services through Uber AI Solutions, and its later autonomous-mobility efforts include partnerships and services. Those offerings do not mean Uber regained the ATG unit it sold to Aurora.
