Matsushita’s April 2003 decision to phase out National overseas was the first stage of a longer effort to make Panasonic its global brand. The change did not happen everywhere at once: overseas markets began switching in 2003, while Japan’s domestic transition followed after Matsushita adopted Panasonic as its corporate name in 2008 and was completed by the end of fiscal 2010.

What Matsushita announced in 2003

On April 14, 2003, a contemporary EE Times report said Matsushita Electric would retire the National brand in overseas markets and use Panasonic instead. The phase-in was expected to begin that April and take about a year.

The geography matters: this was an overseas-brand decision, not an announcement that every National product worldwide would immediately disappear. Panasonic’s own brand history describes 2003 as the point when it positioned Panasonic as its global brand while retaining National for particular regions and products.

Why the two names coexisted

National and Panasonic were brands within the same Matsushita business, not rival manufacturers. Their different names reflected the company’s history and regional marketing.

  • National: Registered as a brand in 1925, it became a familiar name in Japan and was also used across parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
  • Panasonic: First used in 1955 for an export speaker. The name combined “Pan” and “Sonic” and was developed for export use in part because a US manufacturer had already established the National name in the American market.
  • Technics: Retained as a specialist audio brand rather than treated as a general replacement for either National or Panasonic.

According to the 2003 EE Times account, Panasonic was already used exclusively in the United States and Europe, while National remained prominent in Japan and other markets. The arrangement let Matsushita preserve local familiarity while using a name that already had recognition in important overseas markets.

Why Matsushita pursued one global brand

The company’s stated aim was to strengthen Panasonic’s international brand value and present a more unified corporate image. Concentrating marketing and customer recognition on one name could also reduce the fragmentation created by using different lead brands in different regions. The contemporary report placed the move alongside other Japanese and Asian electronics companies’ efforts to build consistent global brands.

That explains the strategy, not its financial result. The available company history and filing record establish the brand consolidation, but do not show that the rebrand alone caused later sales growth or quantify its return.

How the transition unfolded

Date What changed
1925 National was registered as a brand, according to Panasonic’s brand history.
1955 Panasonic was first used for an export speaker, according to the same official chronology.
April 2003 Matsushita began the planned overseas phase-out of National in favour of Panasonic; the rollout was expected to take about a year, according to EE Times.
2004 Panasonic remained the global brand while National continued for selected regions and products, as recorded in Panasonic’s brand history.
January–June 2008 Matsushita announced its intention to change its corporate name to Panasonic Corporation in January; shareholders approved the change and brand unification in June, according to the company’s 2008 history.
October 1, 2008 The corporate name became Panasonic Corporation, and the Japanese transition of National-branded white goods began.
March 31, 2010 Fiscal 2010 ended, and Panasonic’s Form 20-F reports that the Japanese brand conversion was complete by then.

What changed in Japan after 2008

The 2008 corporate-name change and the product-brand change were related but distinct. Matsushita Electric Industrial became Panasonic Corporation on October 1, 2008; National labels on products were then replaced progressively rather than all at once. The company’s account of its 2008 history says the Japanese switch began with new models of air conditioners, refrigerators, tilted-drum washer-dryers and household cyclone vacuum cleaners. It then extended to other white goods and housing equipment.

What “retired” meant for products and consumers

The transition changed the branding on new products and corporate materials; it did not mean that National product categories or technologies were discontinued. A product made before the switch can still carry a National label, and the timing could vary by country, product category and model generation. Older packaging or products marked “National Panasonic” also reflect the earlier brand system.

The rebrand itself does not establish what happened to warranty coverage, spare parts or repairs for any particular appliance. Owners of a legacy National product need to check Panasonic support records for the relevant country and model rather than infer service terms from the brand change.

Technics also shows why the unification was not the elimination of every other name: it continued in a narrower, product-specific audio role while Panasonic became the main corporate and consumer brand.

Why the distinction still matters

The headline event in 2003 was the overseas opening move, not the final worldwide retirement of National. Matsushita first concentrated its international identity around Panasonic, then carried the change into Japan alongside its 2008 corporate-name shift. That distinction explains why a National appliance may be older than a Panasonic-branded successor without representing a different manufacturer.
