Granola raised a $20 million Series A on October 23, 2024, led by Spark Capital, after several prospective investors had already used the company’s AI meeting-notes app themselves. That firsthand product experience likely helped the round come together unusually quickly—but “VCs used it, so they invested” is an oversimplification.
The more important investment thesis was whether Granola could turn meeting notes into searchable, shared company knowledge rather than remain a convenient transcription tool. The original financing is now a historical milestone: Granola later announced a $43 million Series B in May 2025 and a further $125 million financing in March 2026. TechCrunch reported a $1.5 billion valuation alongside the 2026 financing.
What happened in Granola’s $20 million funding round?
Granola announced the Series A on October 23, 2024. Spark Capital led the $20 million round, with partner Nabeel Hyatt identified as the investor involved. Reported participants included Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Lightspeed, Betaworks, Firstminute Capital and others.

According to reporting by TechCrunch, Granola’s fundraising process moved quickly. The founders reportedly held about a dozen investor conversations in one day, and the Series A came together in roughly a week. At the time, the company had five engineers and planned to add four more.
Granola said it intended to use the money to expand engineering, build team and enterprise functionality, and develop features that could identify themes across multiple meetings.
Why did investor product usage matter?
Early-stage investors usually assess a product through demonstrations, customer references, usage data and founder claims. Granola’s case was different for some of its backers: they were already using the product during their own professional meetings.
That gave those investors firsthand exposure to the workflow. They could judge whether the app was useful before making an investment decision, reducing some of the information gap that exists in a typical startup pitch. Existing users could also provide direct feedback about missing features and potential expansion paths.
Granola’s network may have amplified that effect. Founders who encountered the product through investors could introduce it inside their own companies, creating a word-of-mouth distribution loop.
Still, usage by investors is not proof that investor usage alone caused the financing. It does not establish revenue scale, retention quality, enterprise readiness or long-term defensibility. Granola also said investors were a minority of its users and that more than half of its users were in leadership roles. The company described its customer base as shifting toward non-investors.

What does Granola actually do?
Granola describes itself as an AI notepad. The product combines a conventional note-taking interface with automated transcription and AI assistance.

- Install Granola’s desktop or mobile app.
- Connect a calendar if you want meetings to appear in the app.
- Manually start Granola for a meeting.
- Allow it to capture meeting audio from the device rather than adding a visible bot to the call.
- Write rough notes, bullet points or questions—or write very little.
- After the meeting, Granola uses the transcript to enhance and structure the notes.
- Search, share and use the notes for follow-up work.
The central product idea is not that AI replaces note-taking. It is that the user’s rough notes provide personal judgment and emphasis, while AI supplies the missing structure and detail. That can be valuable when someone wants to remain engaged in a conversation instead of typing continuously.
In 2024, the product supported meetings conducted through platforms including Zoom, Google Meet, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Webex. Granola’s current documentation says its desktop product is designed to work with meeting platforms generally, while mobile is intended mainly for in-person meetings.
Why might VCs find this workflow useful?
Venture capital involves a high volume of conversations in which small details matter. An investor may need to remember a founder’s specific metric, product claim, hiring plan, customer reference or follow-up commitment weeks later.
Granola’s workflow could help with:
- Rapid meeting schedules: investors can move from one founder conversation to another without producing a full manual record each time.
- Decision memory: personal notes preserve what the investor considered important, rather than only producing a generic meeting summary.
- Second meetings: searchable history can help an investor recover context before speaking with the same founder again.
- Portfolio coordination: notes may give partners, associates and platform teams a shared record when the user chooses to share them.
- Cross-meeting analysis: the company’s stated product direction included surfacing themes across multiple conversations.
That last point is central to the investment case. A meeting notepad can be a useful personal productivity product. A platform that connects meeting context to CRM systems, team workflows, integrations and organizational memory could become a broader business application.

Granola’s 2024 plans reportedly included CRM integrations, images, context history, team features and tools for identifying themes across meetings. Those ambitions were more significant than simply generating a transcript after a video call.

How is Granola different from a meeting bot?

The “no bot” distinction reduces social friction, but it does not mean that no recording or transcription occurs. Users should disclose the tool and obtain consent where required by law, company policy or meeting norms.
What traction did Granola report in 2024?
Granola told TechCrunch that its user base had grown fivefold since launch, with about 5,000 people using the app weekly. The company also reported that:
- 70% of people who used Granola for a meeting in their first week returned to use it again.
- Weekly meetings had grown sixfold.
These figures were company-provided and were not independently audited in the cited reporting. They are useful signals of early engagement, but they do not answer every investor question. In particular, they do not reveal paid conversion, revenue, customer acquisition cost, retention over longer periods, expansion within teams or profitability.

Privacy, consent and security trade-offs
Granola’s current security materials say its apps are available for macOS, Windows, iPhone and Android. The company says users must manually start the app, it does not automatically join or record meetings, and it does not add a bot to video calls.
Granola also says it does not store meeting audio: desktop audio is transcribed in real time, while mobile may temporarily cache audio during transcription. Its materials state that notes are private by default until shared, and that third-party AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic are not permitted to train on customer data. Granola says users can opt out of Granola’s own model-training use in settings, while Enterprise users have that setting disabled by default at the organization level.

Those are vendor statements, not an independent security audit or a legal conclusion that Granola is suitable for every confidential workflow. Buyers should review the current security documentation, contract terms, retention settings and administrator controls before using it for sensitive information.
Consent remains the most important practical issue. Recording and transcription rules vary by U.S. jurisdiction, and international meetings may involve GDPR or other privacy regimes. Employer policies can require disclosure even where local law does not. Fundraising, M&A, personnel, legal, medical and customer-confidential meetings deserve explicit policy review.
There are also ordinary AI quality risks. Accents, overlapping speakers, poor microphones, jargon and multilingual conversations can produce transcription errors. A summary may turn a tentative comment into an apparent decision, assign an action item to the wrong person or omit an important qualification. Review notes before relying on them or sharing them externally.

The $20 million round is no longer Granola’s latest financing. The company later announced:
- $43 million Series B in May 2025.
- $125 million financing in March 2026.
TechCrunch reported a $1.5 billion valuation in connection with the March 2026 financing. Granola’s own blog describes a direction beyond a meeting notetaker toward putting company context to work.

Current plans and limits
Granola’s pricing page currently presents three tiers:

Granola’s help center says Basic has a 30-day accessible history window. Older notes are stored but inaccessible in the app unless exported. Business billing is per seat, and mixed plan tiers are not supported within one workspace, according to the company’s documentation.
Current documentation also says custom templates are desktop-only. MCP is available, but Basic users cannot retrieve full transcripts through the relevant transcript function, and MCP queries are limited to notes owned by the user rather than necessarily all shared notes.
Who should try Granola?
Granola is a reasonable fit if you:
- Attend many conversations and want to stay engaged instead of typing constantly.
- Prefer editable personal notes enhanced by AI.
- Dislike visible meeting bots.
- Need searchable meeting history and cross-meeting context.
- Work on a supported Mac, Windows, iPhone or Android device and can grant the required permissions.
- Want a lightweight meeting tool rather than a full sales-intelligence platform.
It may be a poor fit if you need video recording, screen capture, a complete replay archive, automatic attendance, sophisticated pipeline analytics, perfect speaker attribution or a verbatim legal record. Organizations requiring SSO, centralized governance, audit controls or formal retention policies may need to evaluate the Enterprise offering carefully rather than assuming that its label alone establishes compliance.
Granola alternatives by use case
The best alternative depends on the problem you are solving:
- Otter.ai is a consideration for transcript-centric meeting workflows.
- Fireflies.ai emphasizes automated capture, searchable transcripts, integrations and sales or team workflows.
- Fathom focuses on automated summaries and follow-up, particularly for customer-facing and sales conversations.
- tl;dv emphasizes meeting recording, transcript sharing and video-meeting collaboration.
- Fellow is broader meeting-management software for agendas, action items and recurring team rituals.
- Native Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet tools may be preferable when an organization already pays for those ecosystems and prioritizes centralized administration.
These are category distinctions, not an independent performance ranking. Current competitor pricing and comparative accuracy were not established by the cited research.
