Environmental groups protested outside Amazon’s Seattle headquarters on Tuesday, July 16, 2024—the first day of Prime Day in the United States—to demand faster cuts in the company’s delivery-related emissions. The action highlighted a key tension in Amazon’s climate strategy: Amazon reported major progress on renewable-electricity matching and a 3% decline in its total carbon footprint, while its reported Scope 1 emissions rose to approximately 14.27 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide equivalent.
What happened outside Amazon’s Seattle headquarters?
Stand.earth, Pacific Environment, Amazon Employees for Climate Justice and other participants gathered near Amazon’s downtown Seattle headquarters, around the Spheres and the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Lenora Street. Protesters displayed a banner reported to be about 1,200 square feet and marked the street with the message, “Amazon is going the wrong way on climate.”
The groups called for zero-emission or decarbonized last-mile delivery and faster reductions in emissions from Amazon’s ships, aircraft, trucks and vans. Contemporary reporting said at least one person was detained; a final number of arrests, charges or court outcomes was not established by the available reporting.

Why activists chose Prime Day
Prime Day is one of Amazon’s biggest sales and publicity events. Holding a protest on its opening day gave environmental groups a large audience and directly connected their message to the delivery network that supports Amazon’s fast-shipping promise.

The July 2024 action also continued a campaign that included a similar Seattle message during the previous year’s Prime Day. Troublemakers Community described a broader action involving banners, leafleting, chanting, street stenciling and a press event. That account documents the organizer’s perspective and activities, but it is not independent verification of every event detail.
What protesters objected to
The campaign was not based on the claim that Amazon had taken no climate action. Its central criticism was that the company’s clean-energy achievements and long-term commitments did not adequately address emissions from its rapidly expanding logistics operation.
Activists pointed to Amazon’s 2023 sustainability reporting, which showed:
- Scope 1 emissions of approximately 14.27 million metric tons of CO2e, up about 7% year over year according to figures cited in contemporaneous reporting.
- Continued reliance on fossil fuels across transportation and other directly controlled operations.
- The need for faster reductions in delivery emissions rather than relying mainly on renewable-energy procurement or long-term targets.
Amazon Employees for Climate Justice accused the company of “distorting the truth” in connection with its renewable-energy announcement. That is the employee group’s allegation, not an established finding by a regulator or court.
What Amazon said it had achieved
Amazon said it remained committed to reaching net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040 under the Climate Pledge. It also reported that its total carbon footprint fell 3% in 2023 and that carbon intensity declined by approximately 13%.

Other company-reported progress included:
- Matching 100% of the electricity consumed by its global operations with renewable-energy sources in 2023—seven years ahead of its original 2030 goal.
- Operating more than 24,000 electric vehicles globally, including approximately 19,000 electric delivery vans during the 2023 reporting period.
- Working toward at least 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030.
- Removing 95% of plastic air pillows from delivery packaging in North America, according to Amazon’s statement to GeekWire.
Amazon’s announcement about its renewable-energy milestone is available on the company’s website, while the underlying figures appear in its 2023 Sustainability Report.
Why total emissions and Scope 1 emissions can move in opposite directions
There is no inherent contradiction in Amazon reporting a lower total carbon footprint while reporting higher Scope 1 emissions. The figures measure different parts of the business.

Amazon’s total footprint combines multiple categories. Carbon intensity is also different from absolute emissions: emissions per package, dollar of sales or another activity measure can fall even while the company’s total emissions rise as its business grows.
The available report does not establish that one particular accounting choice caused the Scope 1 increase. It does show why the figures require careful comparison rather than a single “up” or “down” judgment.

What “100% renewable energy” does—and does not—mean
Amazon’s claim means that electricity consumed by its global operations in 2023 was matched with renewable-energy sources under the company’s accounting approach. It does not mean every Amazon delivery, aircraft, ship, truck, van, warehouse or supplier was directly powered by renewable electricity.

Four concepts should be kept separate:
- Physical electricity use: electricity consumed by facilities and other operations.
- Renewable-energy matching: contracting for or purchasing renewable generation or related instruments sufficient to match electricity consumption over an accounting period.
- Direct fossil-fuel use: fuel burned by vehicles, aircraft, ships, generators and other equipment.
- Net zero: a broader, future goal involving substantial emissions reductions and treatment of residual emissions.
Renewable-energy procurement can support cleaner electricity systems, but it does not automatically eliminate fuel burned in transportation. That distinction explains why activists focused on delivery emissions even as Amazon highlighted its renewable-electricity milestone.
Why last-mile delivery became the focus
The “last mile” is generally the final leg from a delivery station or local facility to a customer. It is highly visible because customers see delivery vans in their neighborhoods, and electrifying these vehicles can reduce tailpipe emissions and local air pollution.
However, cleaner delivery vans do not create a zero-emission supply chain. Amazon’s logistics network also involves warehouses, long-haul trucking, air cargo, maritime shipping, packaging, returns and third-party delivery partners. Contractor and supplier emissions may be accounted for outside Scope 1, depending on the company’s control and reporting boundaries.

Amazon’s target of at least 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030 was a future deployment goal—not a claim that its entire delivery fleet was already electric. Reaching it also requires charging infrastructure, suitable routes, grid capacity and fleet replacement cycles.

Amazon’s fast-delivery model can create competing pressures. Same-day and next-day shipping may require more local facilities, individual vehicle trips or air freight, while consolidated deliveries can reduce trips but may not satisfy every speed expectation.
Electric vehicles can lower emissions from suitable routes, but they do not address every transportation mode. Similarly, renewable-energy projects can reduce the climate impact of electricity consumption without immediately replacing fossil fuel used by aircraft or ocean vessels. A company can also reduce emissions per package while increasing total emissions if shipment volume grows faster than efficiency improves.
What the protest established—and what it did not
The protest demonstrated an ongoing dispute over how Amazon defines and communicates climate progress. Environmental groups argued that Amazon should prioritize direct, near-term cuts in transportation emissions and make its claims clearer. Amazon pointed to measurable progress in renewable-energy matching, electric vehicles, packaging and its 2040 net-zero commitment.

The action itself did not prove that Amazon’s accounting was improper, that its renewable-energy claim was false, or that its climate programs had no effect. It did show why a single headline metric is insufficient: renewable-electricity matching, total footprint, carbon intensity, Scope 1 emissions and fleet electrification answer different questions.

The available figures describe Amazon’s annual reporting period, not the emissions impact of the two-day shopping event specifically.
What to watch in future reporting
For a clearer assessment of Amazon’s progress, readers should look for:
- Absolute Scope 1 emissions and their year-over-year trend.
- Emissions broken down by delivery vans, trucking, aviation and maritime shipping.
- The number and share of electric delivery vehicles, rather than only the total count.
- Progress toward the 2030 electric-van target.
- More detailed reporting on contractors and logistics partners.
- Whether Amazon sets stronger interim milestones before its 2040 net-zero target.
This article concerns the July 16, 2024 protest and the company’s 2023 reporting. It should not be read as a statement of Amazon’s latest 2025 or 2026 emissions performance, which is not established by the cited event-time evidence.
