Why Does Everyone Hate the IT Department?

People do not all hate IT. They resent the experience of depending on it when work is blocked, a system fails, or a rule gets in the way. IT becomes the face of that friction—even when the cause is an overloaded queue, a vendor outage, a business decision, or a security requirement.

The short answer: IT is where workplace friction becomes personal

When a system works, most people can do their jobs without thinking about who keeps it running. When it fails, the consequences are immediate: a warehouse cannot print labels, a salesperson cannot reach customer records, or a new hire cannot log in. When IT is also the team that controls access, approves software, or enforces security rules, it can seem like both the source of the problem and the only route out of it.

That perception is not always fair, but dissatisfaction is real. Forrester’s 2024 service-desk research found that 55% of employees felt completely supported by their service desk. Ivanti reported that 62% of employees who seek help from coworkers or the internet instead of contacting a help desk say they believe those routes are faster. These are research findings, not a count of every worker everywhere, but they point to a central problem: people may be reacting less to technicians personally than to a support experience they expect to be slow or uncertain. Forrester’s report and Ivanti’s research describe those findings.

Employees and IT often see the same request differently

What an employee sees What IT may be managing
“Why won’t you install this tool?” Security, licensing, privacy, support, and integration risks
“Why do I have to submit a ticket?” A way to record, prioritize, assign, and audit requests
“Why is this taking so long?” Dependencies on another team, a vendor, testing, a change window, or limited capacity
“Why can’t I use the easy workaround?” Possible exposure of company data, accounts, or shared systems
“Nobody owns this.” A problem spanning applications, infrastructure, security, procurement, or another department

Both perspectives can be true. A control can be necessary and badly explained; a request can be minor technically but urgent to the employee whose work it blocks. The question is not simply whether IT has a reason. It is whether the process is proportionate, understandable, and workable.

Why resentment builds

1. IT is most visible when something goes wrong

Routine uptime is easy to take for granted. A single outage at month-end, during a customer call, or on a busy shift can overshadow months of normal operation. That does not make every complaint unfair. Recurring failures, silence during incidents, or tickets that vanish into a queue are service problems, not merely bad publicity.

2. IT controls access to tools and time

IT may own or administer accounts, devices, business applications, networks, and software approvals. A denied permission or delayed installation can prevent someone from doing paid work. For the employee, the issue is not an abstract policy; it is lost time, a missed deadline, or a frustrated customer.

Meanwhile, “yes” can involve more than clicking an install button. Someone may need to assess security, licensing, privacy, integrations, supportability, procurement, testing, training, and maintenance. A useful review distinguishes a justified safeguard from a legacy approval chain, a rule built for a different risk, or a process that has no practical exception path.

EAGATON X1 RJ9 Desk Phone Headset - Desk Phone ONLY - Single Ear Noise Cancelling Mic - Compatible with Yealink Cisco Polycom Avaya IP Phones - All-Day Comfort
  • ⚠️ DESK PHONE ONLY — Check Your Port Before Buying: This is an RJ9 headset designed exclusively for desk phones. It uses a 4-pin RJ9 connector — NOT compatible with computers, laptops, tablets, or smartphones. RJ9 wiring varies by phone brand. If your microphone doesn't work, try all 3 included adapters — different brands use different pin configurations
  • Tuned Exclusively for Calls & Conference Audio — Not Designed for Music Playback The headset’s speaker drivers are calibrated to deliver crisp, intelligible speech during phone calls. Its sound signature prioritizes spoken dialogue: voices come across clear and natural, yet the rich, immersive sound needed for music, movies and gaming cannot be achieved.
  • Pro Noise-Canceling Microphone: Flexible uni-directional boom mic filters out office chatter, keyboard clicks, and AC hum. Your callers hear your voice with studio-like clarity — not your environment. Adjustable boom arm for perfect positioning
  • Single-Ear Awareness Design: Mono design keeps one ear free — stay aware of teammates, ambient office sounds, and doorbells while on calls. Ideal for call center agents, receptionists, and collaborative open offices
  • All-Day Lightweight Comfort: Ultra-soft PU leather ear cushion with ventilated design + adjustable headband. Designed for 8+ hour shifts without ear fatigue. Cloud-like fit that stays comfortable through back-to-back meetings

3. Queues create uncertainty, not just delay

A queue is easier to accept when a user knows who owns the issue, what happens next, and when to expect an update. A ticket number with no status leaves the employee unable to plan. The delay may be caused by limited staffing or dependencies, but poor communication makes it feel like indifference.

Scale can make this harder. Freshservice’s 2024 platform benchmark reported lower satisfaction and longer assignment and resolution times among organizations with more than 1,000 employees than among smaller organizations in its dataset. Because it reflects data from a vendor’s platform rather than a neutral survey of all organizations, it is evidence of a pattern to consider, not a universal rule. Read the benchmark report.

4. Security friction can feel like obstruction

Multi-factor authentication, restricted software, access reviews, and change controls can help reduce account compromise, data exposure, licensing problems, and service interruptions. But security is not a blank cheque for inconvenience. Controls should match the risk, be explained in plain language, and offer a safe route for legitimate exceptions. “Policy says no” is a weak answer if nobody can explain the policy or identify an approved alternative.

5. Poor official routes invite workarounds

If the approved route is slow or a sanctioned tool is difficult to use, employees may turn to personal storage, consumer messaging, browser extensions, personal devices, or unapproved apps. This is often called shadow IT. It can create real security and privacy risks, but it is also a signal that the official route may not meet a work need.

In Ivanti’s 2025 digital-employee-experience research, 27% of office workers said they regularly used unauthorized tools or apps because of frustration with employer-provided tools. That is vendor research, not a census of all office workers. A CIO report on WalkMe-sponsored research also cited an estimated average loss of $104 million in 2024 to digital inefficiencies among large enterprises studied. The figure depends on that study’s methods and should not be treated as a universal cost or proof that IT alone caused the losses. Ivanti’s research and CIO’s report provide the context.

“IT” is not one team—and not every failure belongs to it

Employees often use “IT” for the service desk, infrastructure and operations, cybersecurity, applications, procurement, and technology leadership. But the cause of a problem may be elsewhere: a software vendor is down; procurement selected a poor-fit system; HR entered incorrect employment data; a manager bypassed the process; or leaders delayed funding a replacement. A merger can create incompatible systems, while an under-resourced service desk can struggle to support them.

It helps to ask what kind of failure occurred: technical, process, vendor, governance, communication, funding, training, or policy. The visible technician may be the person who receives the complaint without having authority to fix the underlying cause. Organizations also create impossible expectations when they demand consumer-grade simplicity, enterprise security, no downtime, instant support, unlimited customization, and low cost at the same time.

When criticism of IT is fair

  • A known issue affects many people but is repeatedly treated as individual user error.
  • Users receive no owner, meaningful status, or expected next step after submitting a request.
  • Tickets are closed before the employee confirms the problem is fixed, or the same issue keeps returning.
  • People must repeat the same details across portals, email, and chat because systems do not preserve context.
  • A policy blocks legitimate work without a clear rationale or approved alternative.
  • An outage is communicated only after employees discover it themselves.
  • Teams hit ticket-closure or response targets while users remain unable to work.

A technically accurate reply can still be poor service. “That is by design” may be true but does not explain the impact or give the employee a next step. Likewise, scripted replies and chatbots are useful only when they resolve routine issues or lead smoothly to a person who can.

What good IT does differently

Strong service is not the same as saying yes to every request. It means making necessary constraints predictable and reducing avoidable effort. That usually starts with:

  • Clear ownership: tell the user which team has the issue and who will provide the next update.
  • Useful incident communication: explain what is affected, what users should do, and when the next update is due—even if there is no fix yet.
  • Fast triage by business impact: a widespread outage or blocked customer-facing work should not sit in the same priority bucket as a minor request.
  • Self-service that actually works: keep instructions accurate, searchable, accessible, and connected to human help when they fail.
  • Risk-based exceptions: distinguish high-risk requests from low-risk needs instead of making every exception equally difficult.
  • Learning after incidents: investigate repeat failures and share what changed rather than closing the ticket and moving on.

Metrics matter too. Ticket volume, response time, SLA compliance, and cost per ticket can help manage operations, but they do not prove that the employee’s problem was solved. Teams should also watch restoration time, repeat incidents, reopened tickets, user effort, resolution quality, satisfaction by service, and changes that cause incidents. Closing more tickets is not the same as making work easier.

A new service-management platform or more automation may help organize requests and answers, but neither can fix unclear ownership, inadequate staffing, stale knowledge, or a policy that makes no sense. A self-service tool that deflects a user without solving the problem adds another barrier.

What employees can do when something breaks

Users should not have to become support experts, but a clear report can shorten diagnosis. Include what task is blocked, the exact error message, when it started, which device or application is affected, and any recent change. If the issue is urgent, explain the business impact and use the organization’s designated urgent channel rather than sending the same request to multiple teams.

For a stalled request, ask who owns it and when you should expect the next update. For a denied request, ask what risk or policy is involved and what approved alternative exists. If the same failure keeps recurring, document dates and effects and raise it as a pattern. Avoid hiding an unapproved workaround: it can expose company or customer data and make diagnosis harder.

Why some employees appreciate IT

People tend to value IT when support is fast and predictable, explanations are clear, onboarding works, outages are communicated early, and security rules come with workable alternatives. They remember the team that made a stressful incident feel controlled—even if they rarely notice the systems when everything is running normally.

So the answer to “Why does everyone hate the IT department?” is that they do not. They resent interruptions, uncertainty, bureaucracy, and lost control, and IT often owns or appears to own the systems and policies behind them. Sometimes the frustration points to a genuine service failure; sometimes IT is carrying the consequences of decisions made elsewhere. The best response is neither to blame employees nor to excuse every delay, but to make support and safeguards clear, proportionate, and dependable.
