John Ternus is Apple’s announced successor to Tim Cook. Apple said on April 20, 2026, that Ternus will become chief executive officer on September 1, 2026. Until August 31, Cook remains CEO; after the scheduled handover, Cook is expected to become Apple’s executive chairman.
Timing note: This article reflects the announced transition as of August 18, 2026. If you are reading it on or after September 1, check Apple’s latest newsroom announcement or regulatory filings to confirm that the handover occurred as scheduled.
The short answer
John Ternus is Apple’s next CEO after Tim Cook. He is currently Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering and has spent approximately 25 years at the company. Apple’s board unanimously approved the succession plan, with Ternus scheduled to assume the CEO role on September 1, 2026.
Cook is not simply leaving Apple. He is scheduled to become executive chairman, while Arthur Levinson is expected to give up the nonexecutive-chairman role but remain on Apple’s board.

Who is John Ternus?
Ternus is a longtime Apple hardware executive who oversees the company’s Hardware Engineering organization. That makes him responsible for a major part of Apple’s product-development operation, including the engineering work required to turn product plans into finished devices.
He rose through Apple’s hardware-engineering ranks and joined the company’s executive team in 2021 in his current senior vice president role, according to a Reuters factbox published by Investing.com. The Associated Press has described him as a relatively low-profile Apple veteran compared with more publicly visible leaders such as Cook and Steve Jobs.
His role should not be confused with personally designing every Apple product or independently controlling the company’s software, services, finance, retail, marketing, or artificial-intelligence operations. His significance is that he leads the hardware-engineering organization and has extensive familiarity with Apple’s product-development processes.

When does Tim Cook step down?
Apple announced that the formal transition is scheduled for September 1, 2026. The correct wording before that date is that Ternus is Apple’s incoming CEO or announced successor; Cook remains the current CEO through August 31.

From September 1 onward, the wording should change to say that Ternus became CEO—provided Apple confirms that the planned transition took place. Earlier headlines calling Ternus Apple’s “new CEO” may refer to the announcement rather than the effective date.
What will Tim Cook do next?
Cook is scheduled to become Apple’s executive chairman. Apple has not published a detailed description of his specific future responsibilities. Generally, an executive chairman helps lead the board and provides strategic oversight, but that general governance description should not be treated as a complete account of Cook’s Apple-specific duties.
Cook therefore remains connected to Apple after leaving the CEO position. He should not be described as fully retired unless Apple later uses that language.
Why did Apple choose Ternus?
Apple said the decision followed a long-term succession-planning process. The board highlighted Ternus’s deep technical knowledge, longstanding familiarity with Apple, product-development leadership, and ability to preserve the company’s culture and focus on products. Cook called him the “best possible leader” to succeed him.

The appointment also fits the preparation visible in earlier reporting. Bloomberg reported in January 2026 that Ternus had taken on additional responsibility involving Apple’s design organization. That suggested a broader leadership role, although it did not by itself constitute an official succession announcement.
Ternus represents both continuity and change:
- Continuity: He is a deeply embedded Apple insider who understands the company’s culture, products, and development methods.
- Change: His career is centered more directly on hardware engineering and product execution than Cook’s widely associated strengths in operations, supply-chain management, and financial discipline.
That background does not prove Apple will suddenly pursue riskier products or become more innovative. It does explain why the transition is being viewed as a product-focused leadership choice.
The challenges Ternus will inherit
Artificial intelligence and Siri
Apple faces pressure to show stronger progress in artificial intelligence and voice-assistant technology. Bloomberg has reported delays involving a more capable Siri and executive changes connected to Apple’s AI efforts. Reuters coverage has also identified AI as important context for the succession.

Can it integrate AI meaningfully into the iPhone, Mac, and other products? And how much should Apple build internally versus obtain through outside partnerships?

Apple’s announcement does not say that Ternus was chosen specifically to fix AI. AI is a major strategic test facing the incoming CEO, not a confirmed explanation for the appointment.
Keeping hardware innovation moving
Apple’s hardware business is mature, so Ternus will need to balance regular product improvements with the search for new growth. Areas that could shape his tenure include wearables, spatial computing, home products, new device categories, and closer integration between hardware and services.
These are leadership questions, not confirmed Ternus policies. His engineering background may influence how Apple evaluates product opportunities, but it does not establish which products the company will launch or when.

Cook’s tenure was strongly associated with operational execution, global supply-chain management, and the expansion of Apple’s services business. Bloomberg reported that Apple’s value had reached roughly $4 trillion around the time of the succession announcement; market value changes continuously, so that figure should be treated as time-specific rather than permanent.

Ternus must maintain those strengths while developing a product pipeline that convinces investors and customers Apple can continue growing. The challenge is not simply engineering better devices. It is coordinating product development with software, services, manufacturing, finance, regulation, and global operations.
Managing senior leadership changes
Apple has also faced senior leadership changes and retirements around the succession period, including the reported retirement of former chief operating officer Jeff Williams. Individual changes should be distinguished carefully: a retirement, reassignment, resignation, and reported departure are not interchangeable, and they do not automatically establish a broad executive exodus or organizational crisis.

Before Apple’s announcement, media coverage discussed possible internal candidates including Jeff Williams, Deirdre O’Brien, Kevan Parekh, and other senior product, software, services, and operations executives. Bloomberg’s succession reporting described Apple’s preference for internal promotion and identified Ternus as a leading candidate.
Those names are now historical context, not an active contest. Apple has formally announced Ternus as its successor, and the company has not published a complete shortlist of alternatives.
What the appointment could mean for Apple
The most reasonable interpretation is that Apple is prioritizing an internal leader with deep product and engineering experience while seeking continuity during a strategically difficult period. Ternus may bring greater visibility to hardware and product-development decisions, but there is no evidence that he will abandon Cook’s operational model.
For investors and long-term Apple watchers, the key questions are broader than whether the new CEO has an engineering background:
- Product judgment: Can Ternus turn technical expertise into products customers want?
- Cross-functional leadership: Can he coordinate hardware, software, services, design, operations, finance, and retail?
- AI execution: Can Apple improve its AI products while maintaining its privacy and integration standards?
- Capital allocation: Can he preserve financial discipline while funding new product categories?
- Global operations: Can he manage supply-chain, regulatory, and geopolitical risks?
- Executive stability: Can he retain important leaders and build a durable senior team?
- Public leadership: Can a comparatively low-profile executive represent Apple globally?
