64GB can be enough for a light user, but 128GB is the better choice for most people. Choose 256GB if you take lots of video, keep large games or media offline, or want several years of extra storage headroom.
The iPhone 11 was sold with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of internal storage. Because iOS and Apple’s included apps use roughly 12GB to 17GB in a standard configuration, the advertised capacity is not the same as the space available for your own apps and files.

For a used or refurbished iPhone 11, the best decision is not based on the label “light user.” Check how much storage you use today, then account for future photos, video, games, and offline downloads.
How much usable storage does an iPhone 11 really have?
Apple says a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 17GB for iOS and Apple apps, although the actual amount varies with the software version, settings, and model. See Apple’s iPhone 11 technical specifications.

These are planning estimates, not guaranteed measurements. System Data, caches, downloaded updates, messages, and apps vary over time. A 64GB iPhone 11 therefore does not give you 64GB for photos, games, and downloads.
Is 64GB enough?
Yes, if most of the following describe you:
- You mainly stream music and video rather than downloading it.
- You have a modest photo library or use iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage.
- You rarely record long videos, especially in 4K.
- You keep only a few large games installed.
- You do not need a large offline library for travel or poor connectivity.
- Your current phone uses comfortably less than about 45GB.
- You are willing to review storage occasionally.
64GB is probably the wrong choice if any of these apply:
- Your current phone already uses more than roughly 50GB.
- You frequently record and keep video.
- You maintain several large games or creative apps.
- You download films, shows, music, podcasts, or maps for offline use.
- You have a large Messages or WhatsApp media history.
- You want to keep the phone for years without deleting content.
- You strongly dislike paying for cloud storage or managing local files.
So, 64GB is not automatically unusable. It is the “manage your storage” option. It can work well for calls, messages, browsing, social apps, banking, maps, streaming, and modest photography, but it offers less room for growth.
64GB vs. 128GB vs. 256GB
64GB: the budget option
A 64GB iPhone 11 makes sense for a light user, a child’s phone, or a secondary device when the price is substantially lower than the 128GB model. It is also more workable if photos are optimized through iCloud and most entertainment is streamed.
The trade-off is flexibility. Large games, video clips, downloaded media, message attachments, social-media caches, and locally stored Files app content can gradually consume the remaining space. You are more likely to need regular cleanup.
Buy 64GB only when your current storage use confirms it is adequate, or when the discount justifies the compromise.

128GB: the sensible default
128GB is the best balance for most iPhone 11 buyers. It gives regular photographers, everyday app users, and people with several substantial apps a much larger buffer than 64GB without paying for capacity they may never use.

It is not unlimited. A large offline media library, extensive game collection, or substantial video archive can still fill it. However, it is far less likely than 64GB to become inconvenient during ordinary ownership.
If you are unsure, choose 128GB. It is the practical minimum I would recommend for most buyers in 2026 unless the phone is for deliberately light use.
256GB: for storage-heavy users
Choose 256GB if you record frequent or lengthy video, keep many photos and videos locally, maintain a large game library, download entertainment for travel, or want several years of storage headroom.
The important qualification is price. A 256GB iPhone 11 may cost close to a newer refurbished iPhone with better performance, camera hardware, battery condition, and software-support prospects. Compare the complete purchase, not just the extra storage.

Use your current phone to make the decision
Your present storage use is more reliable than generic labels such as “average user.” On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the colored storage bar and the list of apps and categories. Open the largest categories to see what is consuming space.
Use this as a rule of thumb:

These are editorial thresholds, not Apple requirements. Also identify what is using the space. Temporary downloads that you will not transfer are less important than a photo library, game collection, or message archive you intend to keep.
If you are moving from a phone with more storage, do not assume the transfer will fit automatically. Check the source phone’s used capacity before buying.

What fills an iPhone’s storage fastest?
- Video: Frequent recording can consume storage much faster than ordinary still photography. File size depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, duration, and the scene, so there is no universal number of gigabytes per minute.
- Photos and Live Photos: A large camera library can grow steadily, especially when videos are mixed in.
- Games: Modern games can be large and may add downloadable content after installation.
- Offline entertainment: Downloaded films, television episodes, music, and podcasts remain on the device until removed.
- Messages and messaging apps: Conversations can accumulate photos, videos, voice messages, and other attachments.
- Local files: Editing projects, exported media, PDFs, and Files app downloads use internal space.
- Cached data: Social, streaming, and navigation apps may retain temporary files that change over time.
Does iCloud make 64GB equivalent to 128GB or 256GB?
No. Device storage and iCloud storage are separate. Device storage holds iOS, apps, local messages, downloads, and local media. iCloud stores synced content, backups, and other cloud data. Apple explains the distinction in its device and iCloud storage guidance.
iCloud Photos can reduce the amount of space used by your photo library. With Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are retained in iCloud while the iPhone may keep smaller, optimized versions locally. When needed, originals can be downloaded.
The amount of local space used by Photos is dynamic. Optimization is not an instant conversion of your entire library into cloud-only files, and the phone still needs local space for apps, messages, caches, downloads, and recently used photos. Apple’s iCloud Photos guidance explains this behavior.

You also need enough iCloud capacity. Apple provides 5GB free, while its U.S. iCloud+ page lists paid tiers such as 50GB for $0.99 per month, 200GB for $2.99, and 2TB for $9.99 at the time covered by this guide. Prices and availability can change by country and over time; check Apple’s current iCloud page.

Cloud storage is therefore helpful, but it is not a permanent upgrade to a 64GB phone. It depends on syncing, an adequate plan, and internet access. It is also not a substitute for a separate backup strategy.
Important warning about deleting photos
With iCloud Photos, deleting a photo in the Photos app generally deletes it from the synced library across your devices. Enabling Optimize iPhone Storage preserves the library while reducing local usage where possible; manually deleting photos removes them from the library as well. Before deleting anything, verify that important originals exist in another backup.

How to free space if a phone is nearly full
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Identify the largest categories and apps.
- Remove offline films, music, podcasts, maps, and other downloads you no longer need.
- Delete unused apps or use Apple’s recommendations where appropriate.
- Review large message attachments and locally stored files.
- If suitable, enable iCloud Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage.
- Leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi while synchronization and optimization take place.
Do not delete synced photos merely to create space unless you intend to remove them from the iCloud Photos library. Optimization may take time and may not immediately recover the entire photo library’s local footprint.
There is no expandable storage
The iPhone 11 has no microSD slot, and its internal storage cannot be upgraded after purchase. You can transfer files to an external drive or store them in a cloud service, but those options do not increase the built-in space available for apps, system data, and everyday local downloads.
That makes the original capacity decision permanent. A cheaper 64GB model can be good value if it matches your usage, but buying too little storage cannot be fixed with a later hardware upgrade.

Buying a used iPhone 11: storage is not the only value question
A healthy 128GB phone is generally a better purchase than a heavily worn 256GB phone at the same price. Before paying a storage premium, check:
- Battery health and the likely cost of replacement.
- Activation Lock status.
- Carrier-lock status.
- Parts and service history.
- Display, camera, speaker, microphone, and charging-port condition.
- Water or liquid damage.
- Seller warranty and return policy.
- Whether the listed storage capacity matches the phone being shipped.
Used-device prices and inventory change frequently. Do not assume that a particular historical price difference between 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB still applies. Compare the exact listings available when you buy.
Should you buy a newer iPhone instead?
This question matters especially when a 256GB iPhone 11 is priced close to a newer refurbished model. Apple’s refurbished iPhone page currently surfaces newer models, including iPhone 15 and iPhone 16-series examples, rather than implying that refurbished iPhone 11 inventory is consistently available.

- Purchase price and any financing or recurring costs.
- Battery condition and replacement coverage.
- Processor and camera improvements.
- 5G availability and other connectivity differences.
- Expected software-support outlook, based on Apple’s current compatibility information rather than assumptions about a fixed end date.
- Warranty and return protection.
- Storage capacity you actually need.

If the 256GB iPhone 11 is substantially cheaper and in excellent condition, it may still be sensible. If the price is close to a newer refurbished iPhone with a warranty and comparable storage, the newer phone may offer better overall value.
Final verdict
- 64GB: Enough for disciplined light users who stream media, use optimized iCloud Photos, keep few large apps, and accept occasional cleanup.
- 128GB: The best overall choice and the sensible minimum for most iPhone 11 buyers.
- 256GB: Best for heavy photos and video, large games, offline media, frequent travel, or buyers who want substantially more local headroom.
Before buying, check your current phone’s used storage. If you already use around 50GB or more, 64GB is a poor bet. If a 256GB iPhone 11 costs nearly as much as a newer refurbished iPhone, compare the newer option before paying for capacity alone.
