For genuine Apple parts, start with Apple’s Self Service Repair program if you’re experienced and your exact repair is supported. If you’d rather not do the work yourself—or your device is under warranty or AppleCare—get a quote from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. iFixit is a useful DIY alternative for guides, tools, kits, and parts, while independent repair shops can handle the job for you. The right choice depends on the exact model, the part’s source and condition, and the full cost of the repair—not just the listing price.
Compare the main places to buy or obtain parts

“Replacement part” can mean a battery, display assembly, camera, speaker, charging-port assembly, trackpad, keyboard, fan, or another component. Some repairs require small hardware or adhesives as well. Not every component is sold for every device, and not every part is suitable for user installation. Check the current listing for your exact model and repair; Apple’s eligibility and inventory can change.
Apple Self Service Repair: the route for genuine parts
Apple’s Self Service Repair program is the clearest option if you specifically want genuine Apple parts and have experience repairing complex electronics. It supports only eligible models and repairs, and is intended for people with the knowledge and tools to carry out the work safely.

- Identify your exact iPhone or Mac model.
- Open Apple’s repair manual for that model and confirm that it covers the repair you need.
- Find the manual ID in the manual’s introduction.
- Use that ID to order the required part and tools from Apple’s authorized third-party Self Service Repair Store. The ordering process may request the device’s serial number or IMEI.
- Follow the manual, including its specified tools, adhesive steps, safety warnings, and other procedures.
- Complete any post-repair software step the manual calls for, such as Repair Assistant or System Configuration.
- Check the return instructions for the replaced part. Apple offers recycling and may offer credit where eligible.
Do not treat this as a routine battery swap: some repairs involve delicate cables, strong adhesives, special drivers, or software configuration. Read the manual before buying so you can see what the job entails and whether the necessary part and tools are available.

When to have Apple or a repair provider do the work
If you lack repair experience, have an active AppleCare plan or warranty, or cannot risk a failed repair, compare complete installed-repair quotes before buying a part. Apple or an AASP may be the best fit for covered service, official diagnostics, or a complex repair. Apple says repairs by Apple and AASPs are covered by applicable Apple warranty and AppleCare terms; check the specific coverage and quote for your device.
An IRP is a separate option for professional service. Qualifying businesses can access genuine parts and Apple repair resources for certain iPhone and Mac repairs, but they are independent businesses, not AASPs. Their repairs are not Apple-authorized warranty or AppleCare repairs, though the provider may offer its own warranty. Ask the shop:
- Are you an AASP or an IRP?
- Is the part new genuine Apple, used genuine, refurbished, or aftermarket?
- What warranty covers the part and labor, and who handles a defect?
- Does the quote include required configuration, calibration, adhesive, and diagnostics?
- What happens if the repair reveals another fault?
- Could the repair affect an existing AppleCare claim or service eligibility?
Compare the full DIY cost—not just the part—to the installed quote. Include tools, adhesives, consumables, shipping, any core deposit and return shipping, and the cost if the first attempt fails. A professional repair can be better value even if its upfront price is higher.

iFixit is a practical starting point for people who want repair instructions and tools alongside parts. Its store covers popular iPhone and MacBook models, but the type and condition of each part depend on the individual listing. Read the listing rather than assuming all iFixit parts are genuine Apple parts.

Specialist distributors and marketplaces may be useful for an older or uncommon device, or for a small bracket or screw unavailable elsewhere. They require more scrutiny, particularly for batteries, displays, cameras, logic boards, and biometric-related components. A high marketplace rating does not establish that a part is genuine or compatible.
Know what kind of part you are buying
- New genuine Apple: A part identified as genuine by Apple or supported by a verifiable source. It is the closest match to Apple’s specifications and repair process, but availability is model- and repair-specific.
- Used genuine Apple: A genuine part removed from another device. It may work at the same performance and security level as a new genuine part when it is in good condition, but prior use, origin, and modification history can be uncertain. Apple says used parts are not covered by the device’s Apple warranty or AppleCare. See Apple’s iPhone parts information.
- Refurbished: A previously used or damaged part that has been repaired or reconditioned. Ask what was refurbished, who did the work, and what the warranty covers; the label alone does not establish quality.
- Aftermarket: Made by a third party rather than Apple. Quality, calibration, safety, and feature support vary. “OEM,” “OEM-grade,” “original quality,” and “original-equivalent” are not proof that a part is a genuine Apple component.
Check the model before ordering
Small model differences can mean incompatible connectors, dimensions, or components. A listing that says only “MacBook Pro 13-inch” is not specific enough: different generations can use different batteries, displays, keyboards, speakers, and internal layouts.
On a Mac, use Apple menu → About This Mac to check the model name and year. Record the serial number and, where available, the model identifier. For a MacBook, confirm the screen size and chip generation as well. Match the seller’s compatibility details to that exact information.

For an iPhone, verify the precise model and variant—such as standard, Plus, Pro, Pro Max, mini, or SE—and check the model number. Storage or regional variation can matter for some components. Have the serial number or IMEI available if Apple or the seller requests it.

Screen a listing before you buy
For any supplier, establish exactly what is included and what happens if the part fails. Ask:
- Is it new, used, pulled from a device, refurbished, or aftermarket? Who made it, and what does “OEM” mean in this listing?
- Is it the complete assembly or only one subcomponent? Are adhesive, brackets, screws, cables, shields, or sensors included?
- Does the compatibility information match your exact model number and variant?
- Will features such as True Tone, battery-health reporting, camera functions, Face ID, or Touch ID work as expected? Is post-installation configuration required?
- What is the return window and part warranty? Who pays return shipping for a defective or misdescribed item?
- Does the seller show the actual part or only a stock image? Where does it ship from, and could customs charges or a core deposit apply?
Be wary of an undefined “OEM quality” claim, no stated condition, an implausibly low price for a battery or display, no model-specific compatibility details, or a “genuine” claim with no identifiable source. Marketplace feedback is not a substitute for a clear provenance, warranty, and return policy.
Risks that matter for specific repairs
Batteries
Battery quality affects both reliability and safety. Poorly made or mishandled cells may have misleading capacity claims, inadequate protection circuitry, swelling, or overheating. Buy from a supplier with a clear warranty and return process. If you are not experienced with battery repairs, choose a professional installation. Do not bend, puncture, or heat a battery outside the procedure specified in an appropriate repair manual; follow local rules for damaged-battery handling and disposal.
Displays
A less expensive display may differ in brightness, color, refresh rate, touch response, viewing angles, power use, durability, or sensor behavior. The price can reflect the panel technology, whether an original panel was refurbished, or the quality of the replacement assembly. Ask what type of display it is and which features are supported rather than assuming a lower price means an equivalent screen.

Face ID, Touch ID, and other sensitive parts
Biometric components are security-sensitive and are not ordinary plug-in replacements. A compatible-looking part may not restore authentication. Apple notes that security- or privacy-related parts, including biometric components, may be treated differently from ordinary third-party parts. Do not buy one expecting a simple swap to bring Face ID or Touch ID back.
Mac components
Mac repairs can involve tightly integrated parts, paired or verified components, and model-specific configuration. Apple says a Mac may show an “Unknown” part notification when a component is nongenuine, modified, malfunctioning, or not properly verified and linked after repair. Installing the part may not finish the job. Follow the model-specific manual for any Repair Assistant, System Configuration, calibration, or verification step. On iPhone, Parts and Service History provides repair information for many major components; the status and detail shown depend on the model and part. On Mac, check for a parts-history notification after service and ask the provider to explain any “Unknown” status.

Opening a device disturbs its factory seals. Replacing adhesive does not justify a promise that the iPhone or Mac will retain its original water resistance. If liquid exposure is a concern, treat the repaired device accordingly.
iPhone and Mac buying priorities
For an iPhone
For a battery or display, weigh part quality, safety, adhesive, and the installation risk—not only the part cost. For cameras and biometric-related components, check configuration requirements and the possibility that functionality will not be restored by a simple replacement. If resale or trade-in matters, consider how the repair may appear in Parts and Service History.
For a Mac
Exact model identification is essential, especially for MacBook batteries, displays, keyboards, speakers, and ports. Board-level repairs, Touch ID-related components, and sensors can be much more involved than replacing a modular component. Check the repair manual and post-repair verification requirements before ordering; factor in the risk of an Unknown-part notification.
