There is no verified worldwide list of the 20 best-selling individual laptop models in 2005 in the available evidence. The strongest contemporary figures rank notebook makers by estimated shipments, not specific models. Dell led that ranking, followed by HP, Toshiba, Acer and Lenovo.
That distinction matters: a brand’s shipment total cannot tell us which of its many configurations sold most. Here is the best-supported 2005 ranking—and what it can and cannot establish.
Worldwide notebook vendors ranked by estimated 2005 shipments
Contemporary reporting of IDC estimates put these manufacturers at the top of the worldwide notebook market. These are vendor totals, not a ranking of laptop models or audited consumer purchases. Shipment estimates can differ from units ultimately sold to customers.

Heise’s February 2006 report of IDC estimates put worldwide notebook shipments at about 66.3 million for 2005, up from roughly 46 million in 2004. Another contemporary report cited about 65.3 million. The difference is a reason to treat the totals and shares as estimates whose scope or revisions may vary, rather than as precise audited sales.

The ranking says that Dell shipped the most notebooks under its vendor attribution, not that one particular Dell model was the world’s top seller. The same limitation applies to every row.
Why a reliable top-20 model list is hard to establish
“Best seller” can mean several different things: units shipped by a manufacturer, units sold through a retailer, market share, or popularity on a particular website. An editorial “best of the year” award measures a reviewer’s judgment, not sales. A store’s bestseller page may reflect only that store, country and time period.

Model-level comparisons add further complications:
- One family, many configurations: A single model name could cover different processors, memory, drives, screens and prices. Dell systems were often configurable to order, making the idea of one uniform model especially imprecise.
- Brand and manufacturer were not always the same: Original-design manufacturers made machines sold under other companies’ names. Heise reported that Asus produced about 3.8 million notebooks in 2005, but around 2.3 million were shipped as OEM products for brands such as Sony, Apple or Samsung. Those units were not counted as Asus-branded shipments in the vendor table.
- Business sales were not necessarily public by model: Corporate and government purchasing could involve negotiated configurations and large contracts, without a public model-by-model tally.
- Market definitions varied: Reports did not always use “laptop,” “notebook” and “portable PC” identically.
As a result, the available manufacturer totals cannot be converted into a defensible ranking of 20 individual machines. A discussion of the difficulty of finding annual model-level computer sales lists likewise points to naming, configuration and disclosure problems.

Well-known laptop families of the period—not a sales ranking
Major manufacturers sold familiar product families in 2005, including Dell Inspiron and Latitude; HP Pavilion and Compaq notebooks; Toshiba Satellite and Tecra; IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad; Acer Aspire and TravelMate; Sony VAIO; Apple PowerBook and iBook; Asus notebooks; and Fujitsu Siemens Amilo and business systems. These names help describe the market, but the vendor shipment figures do not prove that any one family—or any individual model—ranked among the world’s 20 best sellers.

The original question appeared on a technology forum on December 22, 2005 and pointed readers toward a site-specific “top seller” page. That reference is not an independently audited global market study. Likewise, Amazon’s 2005 Best of list named an iPod as its top seller in a broad electronics category; it did not publish a worldwide laptop-model ranking.

The worldwide figures should not be confused with retail results in a particular country. In the United States, laptops outsold desktops in computer retail sales during May 2005, according to a Current Analysis observation reported by Ars Technica. That was a single month’s retail milestone, not a full-year ranking of laptop models.

India’s available figures cover fiscal year 2005–06, not calendar year 2005, and rank vendors rather than models. The table reported HP at 230,963 units, Lenovo at 116,000, Acer at 83,939, Dell at 42,085 and Toshiba at 40,598, followed by Zenith, Sahara, HCL, LG, PCS, Wipro, Samsung and “Other.” See Dataquest’s India notebook market table for the full figures. These numbers should not be combined with worldwide calendar-year estimates: the geography, period and measure differ.
What a 2005 laptop looked like
Many notebooks of the period used Intel Pentium M processors and Centrino platforms, with integrated Wi-Fi and Windows XP Home or Professional. Screens commonly ranged from about 12 to 17 inches; optical CD/DVD drives were standard features on many machines, and hard-drive capacities were generally measured in tens of gigabytes. DDR or DDR2 memory was typical. Consumers were increasingly considering laptops as desktop replacements, with widescreen displays and mobile entertainment gaining attention.
The ThinkPad X40 offers a concrete period example, not a bestseller claim: IBM’s reference material lists Pentium M configurations, a 12.1-inch XGA display, 256MB or 512MB of memory, 30GB or 40GB drives, and integrated Intel wireless networking. See the ThinkPad reference document.
How to read historical “best seller” claims
For a useful historical comparison, check what was actually counted before accepting a ranking:

- Look for the unit and scope. Is the source reporting worldwide shipments, retail sell-through, one retailer’s orders, or something else?
- Check the period and geography. A May U.S. observation or an India fiscal-year table is not a worldwide calendar-year result.
- Separate vendors from models. Manufacturer market share cannot identify the most popular configuration.
- Keep awards and popularity lists in their lane. Reviews, forum discussion and web rankings can show reputation or interest, but do not establish unit sales.
