VPA means Virtual Payment Address. In normal UPI usage, your VPA is usually the same as your PhonePe UPI ID—for example, rahul123@ybl. To find it, open PhonePe, go to your profile, and look for My BHIM UPI ID, My UPI IDs, or a similarly named section. Copy the active ID exactly before sharing it.
What is VPA in PhonePe?
A VPA, or Virtual Payment Address, is an address used to send and receive money through UPI. It is linked to a bank account, but it is not a separate bank account and does not replace your bank account details.
A VPA lets someone pay you without needing your account number and IFSC code. NPCI describes a UPI ID as an identifier also known as a Virtual Payment Address or VPA. See the NPCI UPI FAQ for the terminology.

The part before the @ is the user identifier. The part after it is the UPI handle associated with the payment-service-provider arrangement. The handle is not necessarily the name of your bank, and you should not assume every PhonePe ID ends in @ybl.

Is a VPA the same as a UPI ID?
For most consumers, yes. If a person, bank, merchant, or form asks for your VPA, they usually want your UPI ID—the alphanumeric address containing an identifier, an @ symbol, and a UPI handle.
There is one important qualification: technical UPI systems can also use other aliases and proxies. A UPI number, for example, is a separate numeric proxy that may map to a VPA. Therefore, do not automatically treat every mobile number, UPI number, or QR-related identifier as identical to the alphanumeric VPA.
How to find your VPA in PhonePe
PhonePe has published the following route:
- Open the PhonePe app.
- Tap your profile picture, name, or profile icon.
- Look for My BHIM UPI ID, My UPI IDs, or UPI ID.
- Open that section to view your active VPA or VPAs.
- Tap the copy or share option if available. Otherwise, copy the ID carefully.
- If several IDs appear, check which one is marked primary or default before giving it to someone who will pay you.
PhonePe’s older published guidance calls the menu My BHIM UPI ID. App layouts and labels can change, so a newer version may use My UPI IDs or place the information under a UPI, payment-method, or bank-account section.
If the profile menu looks different
Start in the profile area and check sections labelled Payment Methods, Bank Accounts, UPI, or UPI IDs. If PhonePe shows bank accounts individually, open the relevant linked account and check whether its VPA is displayed there.
PhonePe’s UPI terms allow users to have multiple linked bank accounts and, in some configurations, multiple VPAs. That means the exact screen can depend on your account setup and app version.

Which PhonePe VPA should you share?
Use the VPA that meets all of these checks:
- It is displayed in your own PhonePe account.
- You copied the spelling, numbers, and handle correctly.
- It is active and intended for receiving money.
- It is associated with the bank account where you want the payment to arrive.
- It is the primary or default VPA when PhonePe shows more than one.
Do not copy an identifier from a contact’s profile, an old message, or a merchant payment screen. If you are unsure which account will receive the money, review PhonePe’s default-account or primary-VPA settings before sharing the address.
A small test payment from someone you trust can help confirm the destination. The sender should verify the recipient name shown on the confirmation screen before authorising the payment.
Can someone pay a PhonePe VPA from another UPI app?
Generally, yes. UPI is designed to support interoperability between participating apps and banks. Someone may use Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, a bank app, or another participating UPI app to send money to your PhonePe UPI ID.
The payment still depends on the relevant banks, payment-service providers, account status, and UPI availability. A handle or account can be temporarily unavailable, disabled, or affected by a technical problem. NPCI’s interoperability guidance explains the cross-app model.
What can you use a PhonePe VPA for?
Your VPA can be used to:
- Receive money from contacts.
- Send or receive UPI payment requests.
- Identify you as the recipient during a UPI transfer.
- Make certain payments where a merchant asks for a UPI ID.
- Support eligible UPI-based services, such as some IPO-payment flows.
PhonePe explains that users can share their UPI ID to receive money and that another person can send money through the UPI transfer flow.

Is it safe to share a PhonePe VPA?
A VPA is generally intended to be shared when you want to receive a payment. Knowing your VPA alone does not let someone debit your account. However, it is not a licence to ignore fraud warnings: someone who knows your VPA may send you a payment request, and you must decide whether to approve or reject it.
Safety rule: Receiving money never requires you to enter your UPI PIN or scan a QR code. If an incoming request asks you to enter your PIN, it is asking you to authorise a payment—not receive one.

PhonePe’s payment-safety guidance warns users not to enter a UPI PIN to receive cashback or money and not to share confidential authentication details.

PhonePe’s terms describe a UPI number as an 8–10-digit number that can act as a proxy for a VPA. It is therefore not necessarily the same as the standard alphanumeric UPI ID.
Does a VPA reveal your bank-account number?
The main purpose of a VPA is to reduce the need to share your bank-account number and IFSC code for a UPI payment. It is a payment-facing alias rather than the account number itself. NPCI describes UPI’s virtual-address model on its UPI overview page.

That does not mean a VPA provides complete anonymity. The sender may see your name or other transaction information during confirmation, and banks, payment-service providers, NPCI, and payment apps process transaction data under their applicable policies and rules.

PhonePe may support multiple linked bank accounts and multiple VPAs. One VPA or account may be marked primary, while another is secondary. PhonePe’s terms also refer to a default bank account for inward funds.
Do not assume that the account you most recently used is automatically the account that will receive every incoming payment. Before sharing your VPA:
- Open the UPI or bank-account section in PhonePe.
- Review the listed VPAs and linked accounts.
- Identify the primary or default selection.
- Confirm that the selected account is the one you want to use.
Routing can depend on the VPA, default-account mapping, and transaction route, so treat the displayed configuration as the important reference rather than relying on memory.
What if you cannot find your VPA?
Try these steps in order:
- Confirm that PhonePe is registered with the mobile number linked to your bank account.
- Check the profile, UPI, payment-method, and bank-account sections.
- Confirm that at least one bank account has been linked.
- If necessary, use My Money > Bank Accounts > Add New Bank Account, or the equivalent labels in your version of the app. PhonePe’s bank-account instructions describe this flow.
- Make sure the bank account is active and its registered mobile number matches the number used in PhonePe.
- Update PhonePe through the official app store if menus or account information appear incomplete.
- Restart or sign in again only when appropriate. Do not uninstall the app unless you are certain you can complete SMS verification and regain account access.
- Use PhonePe’s in-app Help section if the VPA is missing, disabled, or connected to the wrong account.
Do not call phone numbers found in random search results or allow an unknown person to control your phone remotely. Use PhonePe’s official support and contact routes.

What if someone says your VPA is invalid?
Common causes include:
- A typo in the identifier or handle.
- Extra spaces before or after the VPA.
- An old, deleted, or disabled VPA.
- A change to the linked account, mobile number, app, or bank setup.
- Temporary unavailability at a bank, PSP, or UPI service.
- The sender’s app not resolving the handle at that moment.
- Sharing a UPI number or mobile number when the form specifically requires an alphanumeric UPI ID.
Copy the address directly from PhonePe instead of typing it. Ask the sender to check the recipient name before payment. If appropriate, use an official PhonePe QR or payment request to reduce typing errors, but never approve an unexpected request and never scan a QR code merely to receive money.
If a payment is already pending, do not send repeated payments until the first transaction’s status is clear.
What if money is sent to the wrong VPA?
UPI payments should be checked before authorisation because recovery is not guaranteed. If money is sent to the wrong VPA:

- Raise a complaint immediately through the app.
- Contact the sender’s bank or UPI app with the transaction reference, amount, date, and time.
- Do not make a second payment while the first transaction’s status is unclear.
- If fraud is suspected, use official PhonePe support and the relevant Indian cyber-fraud reporting channels.
