The headline refers to Otto, a Seattle business-travel startup incubated by Madrona Venture Labs and led by former Expedia Group and Egencia executive Michael Gulmann. When Otto emerged from stealth in August 2024, it had raised a $6 million seed round and was still developing an AI assistant for business travelers. Since then, the company says it has launched publicly, added booking and itinerary-servicing capabilities, and expanded from flights and hotels to rental cars. Those capabilities are Otto’s claims; they are not independent proof that it can handle every itinerary or disruption without help.
What Otto set out to do
Otto’s idea is to make business travel feel less like filling out search forms and more like delegating a trip to an assistant. A traveler can describe a goal in ordinary language; Otto says it can use calendar context and saved preferences to find relevant travel options, complete bookings, and help service an itinerary when plans change. The company positions this as a more personalized, action-oriented alternative to manually comparing options across travel sites.
The problem it is trying to solve is familiar to people who arrange their own work trips: repeatedly entering preferences, switching between calendars and booking sites, checking locations against meeting times, and then managing changes after purchase. Otto’s pitch is that a traveler should not have to rebuild those decisions from scratch for every trip.

Who founded Otto, and who backed it?
Michael Gulmann is Otto’s founder and CEO. He previously held senior product roles at Expedia Group and worked at Egencia, Expedia’s corporate-travel business. Chundong “CD” Wang is identified by Otto as its CTO. Steve Singh, a Concur co-founder and Madrona managing director, is Otto’s executive chairman. The “Expedia vet” in the original headline most directly refers to Gulmann; it should not be read to mean Otto was founded solely by former Expedia employees.

Madrona Venture Labs incubated the company before it spun out. On August 22, 2024, Otto announced a $6 million seed round led by Madrona. GeekWire also named travel-industry backers including former Expedia CEO Erik Blachford, former Orbitz CEO Barney Harford, Farecast executive Hugh Crean and Direct Travel. The team numbered seven at the time of that report. The mix of travel and technology experience is relevant because booking is not just a language-model problem: a service must connect a traveler’s intent to inventory, fare rules, payment authorization, ticketing and support.
GeekWire’s 2024 report provides the original financing and team context.
Then and now: Otto’s timeline
- August 2024: Otto emerged from stealth with its seed financing and an early vision for an AI assistant focused on business flights and hotels. The product was still being developed, not broadly available. Its early technical plans included GPT-4 and other large language models. The company expected human review for some transactions and said at that stage the bot would not access personal-identifying information or payment details.
- 2024–2025: Otto says it ran a nine-month closed beta. In later company posts, it reported more than 100 completed flight and hotel bookings and described hundreds of beta users. These are self-reported figures, not independent performance data.
- December 4, 2025: Otto announced public availability. Its launch materials described web, mobile and email access, Google and Microsoft 365 calendar connections, flight and hotel booking, integrations including Spotnana and Booking.com, and human servicing through Direct Travel.
- April–May 2026: Otto published further descriptions of its public product and technical setup, including access to NDC feeds and GDS content alongside other travel-platform integrations.
- July 17, 2026: Otto announced rental-car booking. The company says travelers can now book and service flights, hotels and cars through one conversational experience, with support across channels including web, mobile, email, Microsoft Teams and Slack, as well as AI-assistant access through MCP.
The distinction matters: the 2024 story was about a startup’s plan, while the later announcements describe a product the company says is available to the public. A reader should not treat the early limitations as a current product specification—or assume that later company claims establish universal coverage or reliability.

How the travel agent is supposed to work
Consider a traveler who needs to reach a meeting in another city, stay nearby and return the following evening. Otto’s intended workflow is to interpret the request, use connected calendar details where available, apply saved preferences and any relevant company constraints, search travel content, recommend options, and act after the traveler authorizes a booking. Otto says it can then help modify or service the trip; Direct Travel provides human assistance when needed.
That workflow depends on more than a chatbot generating a plausible itinerary. It must match the request to live travel content, accurately present details such as timing and cancellation terms, obtain authorization, complete the transaction and cope with supplier changes. Otto’s materials name Spotnana, Booking.com, NDC feeds and GDS content among the platform or content connections involved. Spotnana is therefore part of the travel-platform context, not simply another name for Otto’s AI application.

In practical terms, an “AI agent” here means software intended to take actions, not just answer questions or suggest places to stay. Otto says it has moved from recommendations to completing bookings and handling changes. The meaningful test is whether it can finish and service a real booking correctly—not whether its conversational response sounds confident.
Who is Otto for?
Otto’s original target was self-directed business travelers and smaller companies that do not use a large corporate travel-management company (TMC), or do not need a heavyweight program for every traveler. The public-launch positioning broadened to individual business travelers and small and midsize businesses, while Direct Travel announced corporate pilots.
That is different from saying Otto replaces an enterprise travel department. Large employers may need negotiated-rate administration, approval chains, policy enforcement, duty-of-care reporting, expense workflows and centralized support. A conversational booking tool may complement some of those systems, but the available claims do not establish that Otto provides the full set of controls a mature corporate travel program may require.

How Otto differs from other travel options
- Consumer booking sites such as Expedia and Booking.com are built around search and booking interfaces where travelers inspect listings and make their own comparisons. Otto’s claimed distinction is conversational intent, calendar awareness and preference memory, with the agent taking action on the traveler’s behalf.
- Corporate travel and expense systems such as Concur, Egencia and Amex Global Business Travel serve organizations that need managed travel, policy and administrative controls. Otto’s initial audience was more self-service oriented. It may not be a substitute where centralized governance and reporting are essential.
- Business-travel platforms such as TravelPerk are another category for companies seeking centralized travel administration. Product fit depends on an organization’s policies, support needs and integrations, not simply on whether an interface uses AI.
- Spotnana is relevant as travel-platform infrastructure integrated with Otto. It helps explain how an AI-facing service can access travel content and transaction capabilities; it is not evidence that Otto owns a separate, comprehensive inventory universe.
- AI-native travel services such as Swifty pursue overlapping conversational or automated booking use cases. Otto’s marketing has used “first” and “only” language, but those competitive superlatives should be treated as company claims, not settled market facts.
Otto says the public product works with travel suppliers and human servicing rather than relying on a language model alone. That ecosystem may improve what it can transact, but it also means coverage and service depend on underlying providers and the particular itinerary.

As of the company materials available in August 2026, Otto’s website displayed a price signal of $10 per month after one free year, with no credit card required, contracts, agent-assist fees or minimum spend stated. Its December 2025 launch announcement had described a free first 12 months for individual travelers and small and midsize businesses. Offers and final terms can change, so check the signup flow and eligibility before relying on that price. Otto’s earlier 2024 discussion of booking revenue sharing and possible paid advanced features describes its initial business model, not necessarily the full economics today.

- Inventory: Can it book the airlines, hotels and rental companies you use, including the routes and rates your employer expects?
- Rules and approvals: Can your organization set limits, require approval, apply negotiated rates and produce the records it needs?
- Preferences: Are loyalty numbers, seat and hotel preferences, and status benefits saved and applied accurately?
- Control: When does Otto only recommend, and when can it book, change or cancel? Can you review terms and override a recommendation before committing?
- Support: When is human help available, how do you reach it during a disruption, and are there situations or fees not covered by the advertised terms?
- Data: What calendar, meeting, travel-history, loyalty and payment data does the service access, retain and share?
- Edge cases: Test the scenarios that could be costly if mishandled, such as international multi-city trips, refunds, schedule changes, corporate rates, accessibility needs and trips with confidential calendar events.
Those are evaluation questions, not documented failures. The available company materials do not independently establish Otto’s performance across every itinerary, supplier, cancellation, refund or disruption scenario.
The trade-off: convenience, privacy and accountability
Preference memory and calendar context could reduce repetitive work, but they also require travelers to decide how much personal and work information to share. A narrower set of recommendations can save time, yet travelers may have less visibility into the alternatives considered or the reasons one option was selected. And an agent with permission to transact can save effort, but a mistaken choice may mean a nonrefundable fare, a policy violation or a missed connection.
Human escalation is consequently more than a convenience feature. Complex irregular operations, supplier disputes, refunds, split tickets and exceptions may require a person who can understand the full context and take responsibility for resolving it. Otto’s partnership with Direct Travel gives its launch model a human-servicing component, but travelers should confirm how that support works for their account and what happens outside the cases automation handles.

Bottom line: a real product, with claims worth testing
Otto is no longer just the stealth-stage concept described in 2024: it announced public availability in late 2025 and says it now books and services flights, hotels and rental cars. Its bet is that business travel software can move beyond search to interpret intent, execute transactions and stay involved after booking. For frequent self-bookers and small teams, that could be useful. For companies with demanding policy, approval, duty-of-care and expense requirements, it is not established as a full TMC replacement. The key question is not whether Otto can make a travel plan sound convincing, but whether it reliably books the right trip and helps resolve problems when the plan changes.
