Online advertising is paid promotion delivered through internet-connected channels, including search engines, websites, mobile apps, social networks, streaming services, online marketplaces, email environments and connected TVs. It is one part of digital marketing—not a synonym for all digital marketing.
An online ad usually combines an advertiser, a target audience or placement, a creative asset, a business objective, a delivery system and measurable outcomes such as impressions, clicks, leads or sales.
What is online advertising?
Online advertising is the paid distribution of a promotional message over the internet or through an internet-connected service. Businesses, nonprofits, creators and other organizations use it to promote products, services, brands, causes or content.

A typical online advertisement has:
- An advertiser: the company, organization or individual paying for promotion.
- An audience or placement: selected people, search queries, locations, websites, apps, content categories or shopping environments.
- Creative: text, images, video, audio, product data or an interactive format.
- An objective: such as awareness, traffic, leads, app installs, purchases or store visits.
- A delivery mechanism: usually an advertising platform, publisher, network, auction or negotiated sponsorship.
- A measurable outcome: such as an impression, click, view, conversion, acquisition cost or attributed revenue.
Google describes Google Ads as an online advertising program through which advertisers can reach people interested in their products or services while controlling campaign settings and budgets. Google also states that Google Ads has no minimum spending commitment. Google’s explanation of Google Ads provides the platform’s current details.

Online advertising versus digital marketing
Online advertising is a subset of digital marketing. Digital marketing is the broader category covering promotional activity conducted through digital channels, whether paid or unpaid.
| Concept | Paid distribution required? | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Online advertising | Usually yes | A sponsored search result |
| Search-engine optimization | No direct ad payment required | An organic search result |
| Content marketing | Not necessarily | An educational guide published on a company website |
| Social-media marketing | Paid or organic | An unpaid post or a promoted post |
| Email marketing | Not necessarily | An owned newsletter sent to subscribers |
| Affiliate marketing | Usually performance-based | A referral link that earns a commission |
For example, a company’s unpaid social post is digital marketing but is not necessarily advertising. A paid promotion of that post is online advertising. Likewise, an email newsletter sent to an existing list is not automatically an advertisement, while a paid placement in someone else’s newsletter generally is.
Key features of online advertising
Digital delivery
Ads can appear on search engines, websites, apps, social platforms, streaming music and video services, marketplaces, email products and connected devices. This allows a local business to advertise within a service area or a national brand to reach audiences across multiple digital environments.
Audience and contextual targeting
Advertisers may select audiences using signals such as search queries, keywords, geography, demographic characteristics, interests, device type, website or app context, purchase intent, customer lists and previous interactions with a brand.
Targeting is not perfect certainty. Audience categories may be inferred, modeled, outdated or incomplete. Privacy settings, consent choices, browser restrictions, platform policies and data quality can all affect who is reached and what the advertiser can measure.
Measurability
Online campaigns can often report impressions, reach, frequency, clicks, views, conversions, revenue and costs. These measurements are useful, but they are not automatically proof that an advertisement caused a sale. People may see several ads, convert later, switch devices or purchase without needing the ad.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Budget flexibility
Most major platforms let advertisers set budgets, schedules, geographic controls and bidding preferences. Google says advertisers control their budget and can change campaign settings online. Flexible budgeting does not guarantee good results: a small campaign may not generate enough data for reliable optimization, while a broad campaign can spend quickly on low-value traffic.
Auction-based delivery
Many ads are allocated through auctions. The highest bid does not necessarily win every placement. Platforms may also consider relevance, expected response, quality, user experience, campaign objective and other factors. Auction and billing rules differ by platform, ad type, market and account settings.
Multiple payment models
An advertiser may pay for clicks, impressions, video views, leads, app installs, conversions, a reserved sponsorship or a percentage of sales. The bid an advertiser sets is not always the final amount charged.
Creative variety
Online ads may be text-only, static image, animated, rich media, video, audio, interactive, product-feed based, carousel, collection, sponsored-content or connected-TV units. The appropriate format depends on the audience, objective and product.

Rapid testing and optimization
Advertisers can test headlines, images, videos, calls to action, landing pages, offers, audiences, placements, bids and conversion objectives. Speed is useful, but changing too many variables at once or overreacting to a small sample can produce bad decisions.
Main types of online advertising
1. Search advertising
Search advertising places paid text, shopping or other sponsored results alongside or above results for a user’s query.
Example: A plumbing company bids on “emergency plumber near me” and directs searchers to a booking or phone-call page.
Best for: Capturing existing demand and high-intent searches.

- Premium water-based polyester canvas delivers sharp details and vibrant color reproduction. Special coating ensures excellent ink absorption without bleeding, perfect for photo printing, artwork reproduction, and professional display.
- Advanced waterproof surface protects prints from moisture and humidity. Fade-resistant coating keeps your artwork looking fresh over time, suitable for both indoor and short-term outdoor use.
- Made from high-density polyester fiber, this canvas is stronger than traditional cotton canvas. Resistant to cracking, curling, and tearing during printing, stretching, or framing.
- Compatible with most inkjet printers using dye or pigment ink Smooth feeding with no paper jams, ideal for wide-format printing and plotters.
- Perfect for wall art, photo studio printing, advertising banners, posters, indoor decoration, and DIY canvas frames. Great choice for artists, photographers, and print shops.
Advantages: The user’s query can closely match the offer, making search useful for local services and urgent needs.
Limitations: Competitive keywords may be expensive, and search ads have limited reach when few people are actively searching. A click is not necessarily a qualified lead.
Microsoft’s advertising fundamentals describes search advertising and pay-per-click advertising, while Microsoft Advertising provides search, shopping and other campaign options at its official platform.
2. Display advertising
Display advertising uses visual units—such as banners, rectangles, responsive ads, interstitials or rich-media formats—on websites, apps and other digital properties.
Recommended Free Tools
Example: A travel company shows a hotel image and booking offer on a news website.
Display ads can create awareness, support visual storytelling and remind previous visitors about a product. They can also suffer from banner blindness, accidental clicks, unsuitable placements, fraud and lower purchase intent than many search placements.
3. Social-media advertising
Social-media ads appear in feeds, stories, reels, messaging environments, platform search results or other placements controlled by a social network.
Example: A clothing company shows a short product video to people who previously visited its website.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Social advertising is useful for discovery, visual products, lead generation and retargeting. Results often depend heavily on fresh creative, and a high engagement rate does not necessarily translate into sales.
4. Native advertising
Native advertising is paid content designed to resemble the editorial, social or recommendation material surrounding it. Examples include sponsored articles, paid recommendations and publisher features.
Native advertising is not inherently deceptive. The important issue is whether its commercial nature is clearly disclosed. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s online advertising guidance explains that native ads can resemble news articles, reviews, entertainment and other surrounding content, so disclosures should be clear and noticeable.
5. Video advertising
Video ads may run before, during or after online video content, or appear within a social feed.

Video can explain a product and support brand storytelling, but it generally requires more creative resources than text or static images. A completed view does not guarantee attention, consideration or a purchase.
6. Audio advertising
Audio ads appear in podcasts, streaming music, internet radio and other online audio environments. They can be recorded spots or host-read sponsorships.

Example: A meal-delivery service sponsors a podcast segment with a promotional code.
Audio can reach people when they are not looking at a screen and can benefit from contextual or host-read trust. Measurement may rely on codes, special URLs, surveys or modeled results. The IAB and PwC internet advertising report includes online audio, podcasts, streaming radio, connected TV and commerce media within the broader internet advertising ecosystem.
7. Retargeting or remarketing
Retargeting shows ads to people who previously visited a website, used an app, watched content, interacted with a brand or met another campaign condition.
Example: A shopper views a product without buying and later sees an ad for that product.
Retargeting can re-engage people who already know a brand, but poor exclusion settings may advertise an item after it has been purchased. Repeated exposure can also annoy users, and tracking limitations can make audience matching incomplete. A retargeted conversion may receive too much credit if the customer was already likely to buy.
8. Marketplace and retail-media advertising
These are paid placements within an online retailer’s website, app, search results, product pages or affiliated advertising network.
Example: A consumer-goods brand pays for a sponsored product listing when shoppers search a marketplace.
The major advantage is proximity to a purchase decision and access to retailer shopping signals. The trade-off is that the retailer may retain much of the customer relationship and measurement may be less independent.
9. Classified, listing and directory advertising
Businesses pay to promote listings on local directories, property websites, job boards, automotive marketplaces or specialist platforms. A real-estate agent paying to feature a property is one example.
10. Email and newsletter advertising
A business may pay for a sponsored placement, advertisement or promotional insertion in another publisher’s newsletter. This differs from sending an owned newsletter to its own subscribers, which is an email-marketing activity but not necessarily paid advertising.
11. Influencer and creator advertising
Influencer advertising occurs when a brand pays or provides another material benefit for promotional content from a creator.
Example: A fitness company compensates a creator to demonstrate its equipment in a video.
The relationship should be disclosed clearly enough for viewers to notice and understand it. The FTC’s online advertising resources cover endorsements, influencer marketing, material connections, reviews and social-media marketing.

How online advertising works
- Set the objective. Decide whether the campaign is intended to generate awareness, traffic, leads, purchases, app installs or store visits.
- Define the audience or context. Choose keywords, locations, demographics, interests, customer lists, content categories or shopping contexts, subject to platform rules.
- Create the advertisement. Prepare copy, images, video, audio, product information, disclosures and a call to action.
- Choose the destination. This may be a landing page, product page, app store, lead form, phone number, store locator or in-platform checkout.
- Set the budget and bidding controls. Decide how much the campaign can spend and whether the system should optimize for clicks, impressions, views, leads, purchases or another event.
- Enter the delivery system. The ad may compete in an auction or use a negotiated or reserved placement.
- Serve the ad. The platform or publisher decides whether, where and when the ad appears.
- Record events. Impressions, clicks, views, interactions, conversions and revenue may be logged, subject to privacy and measurement limitations.
- Evaluate business results. Compare performance against the campaign’s real objective, not just engagement metrics.
- Optimize or stop. Adjust the creative, audience, budget, placement, landing page, offer or conversion setup—or stop spending if the economics do not work.
How advertisers pay for online ads
Common pricing models include:
- CPC or PPC: Payment based on a click. Microsoft describes PPC as paying when someone clicks an ad rather than paying a fixed price set in advance.
- CPM: Payment per 1,000 impressions.
- CPV: Payment based on a video view or completed view, according to the platform’s rules.
- CPA: Payment or optimization based on an acquisition or conversion.
- CPL: Cost per lead.
- CPI: Cost per app install.
- Flat-rate sponsorship: A negotiated fee for a newsletter, publication, placement or event.
- Affiliate commission: A revenue share or commission tied to a sale or other qualifying action.
Useful formulas include:
- CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks
- CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
- CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100
- Conversion rate = conversions ÷ relevant visits or clicks × 100
- CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions
- ROAS = attributed revenue ÷ ad spend
ROAS is not profit. It may exclude product costs, shipping, salaries, agency fees, refunds, taxes and overhead. A campaign can report positive ROAS and still lose money.

Local service business
A dentist runs paid search ads for “dentist open Saturday,” targets the service area and directs users to a booking page. The goal is appointments or calls, not simply clicks. Irrelevant searches and leads outside the service area are common risks.
E-commerce retailer
A shoe retailer uses product ads, display advertising and retargeting for visitors who viewed a product. It measures purchases, revenue, CPA and ROAS. The retailer should still test whether retargeting generated incremental sales rather than merely receiving credit for likely buyers.
New consumer brand
A beverage company runs short-form video ads to introduce a product to people who have not searched for it. Awareness, reach, site visits and later sales may all matter. Optimizing only for inexpensive video views can produce weak commercial results.
B2B software company
A software firm uses search ads for high-intent queries and professional-network advertising for account-based awareness. The important outcome is qualified pipeline, not the number of low-quality form submissions.
Recommended Free Tools
Mobile app
An app publisher promotes installation ads to users likely to register, subscribe or complete another meaningful in-app action. Cheap installs are not necessarily valuable if users do not return or pay.
Sponsored content
A financial company sponsors a clearly labeled article in a business publication. The goal may be awareness, education or qualified traffic. Weak labeling can make readers misunderstand the content’s commercial origin.
What should advertisers measure?
| Objective | Useful primary metrics | Potentially misleading on their own |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Reach, frequency, viewable impressions and brand-lift measures | Clicks alone |
| Traffic | Qualified sessions, engaged visits and landing-page behavior | Cheap clicks from irrelevant users |
| Leads | Qualified leads, lead-to-opportunity rate and cost per qualified lead | Raw form submissions |
| E-commerce | Incremental revenue, profit, CPA, ROAS and new-customer rate | Last-click revenue alone |
| App promotion | Cost per install, activation, retention and paid conversion | Installs without retention |
| Local action | Calls, bookings, directions and store visits | Impressions without local outcomes |
CTR is not the same as effectiveness. An ad can attract many clicks but still fail because the traffic is unqualified, the landing page is poor, the offer is uncompetitive or conversion tracking is incorrect. Platform reporting also reflects the platform’s definitions, attribution window and modeling, so reported results should be interpreted rather than accepted as proof of causation.

- Targeting: Advertisers can use intent, location, context and other available audience signals.
- Speed: Campaigns can often be launched, edited, paused and tested quickly.
- Budget flexibility: Spending can be adjusted to match the campaign and business.
- Measurement: Digital events can often be recorded more directly than offline exposure.
- Personalization: Creative, offers and landing pages can be adapted to audiences and contexts.
- Testing: Advertisers can compare messages, formats, audiences and destinations.
- Scalability: A campaign that works may be expanded across locations, audiences or formats.
Limitations and risks
Measurement is incomplete
Cookies, consent choices, ad blockers, device changes, delayed purchases, offline sales and platform silos can make the customer journey difficult to observe.
Attribution is not causation
A reported conversion after an ad exposure does not prove that the ad caused the purchase. For important decisions, advertisers can use experiments, holdout groups, geographic tests or other incrementality methods.

Targeting can be inaccurate
Audience labels are often probabilistic. Narrow targeting can also make a campaign expensive, too small or unrepresentative.
Waste can occur
Common causes include broad keywords, duplicate audiences, missing negative keywords, unsuitable placements, accidental clicks, ad fatigue, weak tracking, poor landing pages and optimization toward low-value conversions.
Platform dependence
Relying on one platform can expose a business to changes in auctions, audience access, reporting, algorithms and policies. Diversification may be sensible when one platform supplies most leads or revenue.
Creative fatigue
An ad can lose effectiveness when the same audience sees it repeatedly. Monitor frequency, reach and creative performance, and rotate or refresh assets when appropriate.
Tracking errors
Duplicate tags, broken confirmation pages, missing cross-domain measurement, incorrect event settings, untracked phone calls, missing offline sales, currency errors and privacy-related data gaps can all distort results.
Landing-page mismatch
If an ad promises a price, feature, product or service that the destination does not immediately support, users may leave. A mismatch can also create compliance and platform-policy problems.
Legal and ethical considerations
Laws differ by country, industry, audience and product category. The following is a general, U.S.-focused overview rather than legal advice.
The FTC says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and supported by appropriate evidence. Material conditions should be clear and conspicuous. Its advertising and marketing guidance and small-business advertising FAQ explain these principles.
- Free offers: Conditions attached to “free” or “no cost” claims should be easy to notice and understand.
- Prices and discounts: Mandatory fees and important pricing conditions should not be hidden. The FTC’s fee-rule guidance discusses disclosures in interactive media.
- Native advertising: Sponsored articles and recommendations should be labeled clearly enough to distinguish advertising from independent editorial content.
- Influencers and reviews: Paid relationships, material connections and incentives should be disclosed. Fake reviews and undisclosed paid rankings can mislead consumers.
- Privacy and consent: Advertisers must consider applicable privacy, consent, email, children’s-privacy and platform-policy requirements.
- Sensitive categories: Health, financial services, employment, housing and children’s advertising may face additional legal, targeting and substantiation restrictions.
How to choose an online advertising channel
- Start with customer behavior. If customers actively search for a solution, test search ads. If the product needs discovery or visual explanation, consider social, display or video. If customers buy inside a marketplace, consider retail-media ads.
- Match the funnel stage. Awareness often suits video, display, audio, social, connected TV and sponsorships. Conversion may suit search, shopping, marketplace ads and carefully managed retargeting.
- Check the economics. Know your average order value, gross margin, lifetime value, lead-to-sale rate, maximum acceptable acquisition cost, refund rate and sales-cycle length.
- Check operational readiness. You need a credible offer, usable landing page, reliable conversion tracking, inventory or fulfillment capacity and staff able to respond to leads.
- Choose platforms based on fit, not popularity. Google Ads may suit search intent and product discovery; Microsoft Advertising may provide an additional search channel; social and video may suit discovery; professional-network ads may suit high-value B2B; marketplace ads may suit products sold within a retailer ecosystem.
- Test before scaling. Set a defined objective and decision threshold, then evaluate valuable outcomes rather than assuming a platform’s reported clicks or conversions equal incremental profit.
Google states that advertisers can set and control their budgets and that there is no minimum spending commitment, but actual cost and performance remain dependent on the market, audience, competition, placement, objective and campaign setup. No universal CPC, CPM or return applies to every business.
When online advertising is a poor starting point
Paid promotion is unlikely to solve fundamental business problems. Delay a campaign or reduce its scope if the offer is unclear, the landing page is confusing or slow, leads cannot be answered promptly, products are unavailable, conversion tracking is broken or the business cannot afford meaningful testing.
Advertising can generate attention and traffic, but it cannot reliably compensate for a poor product, weak customer experience or economics that do not support acquisition costs.

Do online ads always use cookies?
No. Online advertising can use search intent, contextual placement, first-party data, platform signals and other methods. Cookies and cross-site tracking may be limited by consent choices, browsers, operating systems and privacy controls.
Is online advertising effective for small businesses?
It can be, particularly when the channel matches customer behavior and the business has a clear offer, usable landing page, reliable tracking and capacity to handle leads. Effectiveness depends on the market and campaign economics, not business size alone.
What makes an online ad misleading?
Examples include unsupported claims, hidden material conditions, unclear paid endorsements, disguised native advertising and prices that conceal mandatory fees. Rules vary by jurisdiction and industry.
