Amazon Style was a two-store experiment in combining physical clothing try-ons with Amazon’s app, recommendations and fulfillment systems. Amazon announced the concept in January 2022, opened stores in California and Ohio, then closed both in November 2023. Amazon said it would focus on online fashion shopping; the company did not publish store-level results that establish why the experiment ended.
What Amazon Style was designed to do
Amazon described Amazon Style as its first physical fashion store. It was meant to address a basic tension in online apparel shopping: websites offer broad selection, but customers cannot touch garments or try them on before buying. A conventional store solves the try-on problem, but its floor space limits how much merchandise it can display.
The proposed hybrid kept a relatively small number of garments on the sales floor and used the Amazon Shopping app and back-room inventory to make other sizes, colors and styles available to shoppers. Amazon said the format could offer more than twice as many styles as a traditional store of comparable size; that was the company’s claim, not an independently verified result. Its launch announcement also described women’s and men’s clothing, shoes and accessories, alongside some adjacent merchandise such as skincare, home goods and athletic gear. Where it opened—and when it closed
Amazon announced the concept on January 20, 2022, with its first location planned for The Americana at Brand in Glendale, California. The Glendale store was open by May 2022. Amazon later opened a second store at Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. Both locations closed in November 2023. The Glendale store’s reported final day was November 9.

How shopping worked inside the store
- Browse physical displays. Shoppers could inspect and touch sample garments and accessories rather than searching through a full rack of every size and color.
- Scan a product QR code. With the Amazon Shopping app, a customer could see product details, available sizes and colors, prices and customer ratings.
- Send selections to a fitting room. A shopper could request items through the app instead of carrying them around the store.
- Request alternatives from the fitting room. Touchscreens let customers ask for another size, color or style, browse recommendations and rate items while trying on their selections.
- Choose what to buy. Customers could purchase in the store, have items sent to pickup, or save products in the app to consider or buy later. Amazon also described in-store returns for eligible purchases, including some items ordered online.
The process connected the physical shop to Amazon’s digital catalog, but it did not put every Amazon Fashion product on the premises. Amazon’s account of the Glendale store describes the experience and its app-based features. Amazon’s account from inside the Glendale store

What made it “tech-infused”—and what still required people
The technology was primarily in the shopping workflow, not in the clothes. QR codes linked displays to digital product information; app requests connected shoppers to merchandise held elsewhere in the store; fitting-room touchscreens enabled further requests. Amazon said machine-learning systems generated real-time recommendations based on browsing and scanning activity. The company did not publish evidence showing how accurate or effective those recommendations were.

The customer trade-off: more digital convenience, more dependence on the app
The format could let a shopper inspect and try on clothes while using digital tools to find options beyond the display floor. Fitting-room requests could also spare customers from repeatedly searching racks. But those benefits depended on a working phone, app access, QR codes, touchscreens and accurate local inventory. A customer who preferred conventional browsing—or had a dead battery, no account or little interest in sharing shopping signals—could encounter extra friction instead of convenience.
Personalized discovery and palm checkout also raised privacy and consent questions. Amazon’s launch materials described these features, but do not establish how customers responded to them or provide a basis for assessing their privacy impact. For shoppers, the practical point is that Amazon Style tied parts of an in-person clothing trip to Amazon’s digital ecosystem.

The retail economics the concept had to prove
Displaying fewer units while exposing a wider assortment through software can make floor space go further, but the model shifts work rather than eliminating it. Employees still had to retrieve requested products, deliver them to fitting rooms, process returns and keep inventory accurate. Each request added handling, and a mismatch between what the app showed and what was locally available could undermine the experience.
Apparel also brings fit uncertainty and returns—problems a fitting room may reduce for an individual purchase, but not necessarily solve for a store’s economics. The available closure coverage does not provide store-level sales, profitability, traffic, conversion, return-rate or customer-retention figures. That means the public record supports describing Amazon Style as a test of digitally assisted apparel retail, not as proof that the model was either economically successful or unsuccessful.

What the closures say about Amazon’s physical-retail strategy
Amazon Style followed a wider set of physical-retail experiments, including Amazon Books, Amazon 4-star and Amazon Go, alongside Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods Market in 2017. Amazon later closed Books and 4-star locations while reassessing parts of its physical-store portfolio. Style’s two-store expansion and subsequent closure fit that pattern of testing formats and then narrowing the effort.
The stores’ short run does not identify which element—customer adoption, operating complexity, store economics or a broader strategic decision—determined their fate. Amazon’s stated explanation was a shift in focus to online fashion. Amazon continues to sell fashion online, but Amazon Style’s physical-store format is discontinued: neither of its two known locations remains open.
