Wendy’s reported that its FreshAI drive-through system handled 86% of orders in a pilot without a restaurant team member stepping in. The other roughly 14% needed human intervention. That is not the same as saying the AI got 14% of orders wrong: the company did not publish enough detail to tell readers what counted as an intervention or how many orders were incorrectly recorded or prepared.
What the 14% figure actually measures
The much-repeated “14%” is the arithmetic inverse of Wendy’s reported 86% rate for orders handled without team-member intervention. In its December 11, 2023 pilot update, Wendy’s described success in terms of orders submitted without human intervention and consistency at the drive-through.
That tells us how often a person had to step in under the company’s definition. It does not tell us that 14% of orders were misheard, entered incorrectly, charged incorrectly, made incorrectly, or disliked by customers. An employee might take over because a request is complicated, a customer asks for a person, or the system escalates an uncertain exchange. And an order completed without intervention could still contain a mistake that nobody caught.

The retrieved material also does not specify the full denominator, pilot sample size and duration, confidence interval, or an independent audit. So the fairest description is: Wendy’s reported that about 14% of orders in its Columbus pilot required human intervention—not that 14% were proven wrong.

What FreshAI does
Wendy’s announced FreshAI in May 2023 in partnership with Google Cloud. It is a conversational voice-ordering system using generative AI and Google Cloud large-language-model technology, not simply a prerecorded phone menu. Wendy’s says it is designed to respond to customers, answer menu questions and take customized orders. The company has given the example of interpreting “a large chocolate milkshake” as a large Frosty. A visual order display is intended to let customers check what the system has entered.
That does not mean a model runs the whole restaurant. Wendy’s presents FreshAI as an assistant to restaurant teams. Employees still prepare and fulfill orders, handle exceptions and serve customers. The company’s original announcement and product description are available in its investor-relations release and AI innovation overview.
Why drive-through ordering is a tough speech problem
A drive-through conversation takes place in conditions that ordinary voice assistants do not face. Microphones pick up engines, road noise and wind. Several people in a car may speak, interrupt one another or change the order. Customers use accents, slang and casual descriptions rather than exact menu names. Then come the difficult details: substitutions, additions, exclusions, sizes, promotions and products that may be temporarily unavailable.

The visual display can help catch errors, but only if it is legible, updated and easy to correct—and it cannot prove what happens later in the kitchen.

Is an 86% no-intervention rate good?
There is no sound way to judge the number in isolation. One in roughly seven transactions needing a human may sound like a substantial fallback burden; an 86% rate may also represent meaningful automation in an early pilot. Which interpretation matters depends on what the system is meant to improve and what happens when it is uncertain.
A useful comparison would need more than a headline percentage. Readers would need to know how often human order takers require correction, how many complaints or remakes occur per transaction, whether the AI speeds service, and what it costs in employee time to monitor and repair its work. The pilot result does not provide a controlled human baseline. Nor does a low intervention rate necessarily mean high accuracy: a system can avoid handing off while quietly entering the wrong item.
In June 2024, coverage placed Wendy’s figure alongside reports about McDonald’s ending an IBM-developed ordering test and White Castle’s own human-intervention figure. Those reports provide context for the fast-food industry’s experimentation, not a controlled league table. The companies may use different definitions, sample periods and restaurant conditions, and the figures may be company-supplied.

What changed after the pilot
The 86% figure describes the Columbus pilot reported in December 2023, when Wendy’s said FreshAI was operating across four company restaurants there. It is not a national accuracy result. In a May 2, 2025 update, Wendy’s said the program had expanded from pilots in two states in 2024 toward nationwide deployment, was processing tens of thousands of orders a day, and would continue scaling across company-operated and franchise locations during 2025.

That update also said Spanish-language capability had been introduced. Wendy’s did not publish a new, directly comparable intervention or accuracy rate there, a complete language list, or a location-by-location availability map. Nationwide expansion efforts should not be read as proof that every Wendy’s has FreshAI or that the original pilot performance held everywhere.

Automation could make order-taking more consistent during rushes and free employees to focus on food preparation or customer service. Wendy’s says FreshAI is intended to assist staff, not simply replace them. But that framing does not answer what happens to staffing levels, whether employees must monitor several lanes, or whether correcting AI mistakes makes work more demanding. The available evidence does not establish that FreshAI eliminated workers at particular locations.
For customers, a conversational system may answer menu questions and offer a consistent interaction. A visual display can make an order easier to verify, and Spanish capability may help some customers. But one added language is not proof of broad accessibility. People with speech, hearing, cognitive or language differences may still need another way to order. Customers also need a clear route to interrupt, correct an item or reach a person without starting over.
Voice ordering raises a separate privacy question: whether speech is recorded, how long audio or transcripts are retained, whether data is shared or used for analytics or model improvement, and whether passengers’ voices are captured. The available sources do not establish Wendy’s specific retention or commercial-use policy. A concern about voice-data collection is not evidence that Wendy’s uses recordings for advertising; customers should look for the restaurant’s applicable notices and privacy terms rather than assume either practice.
How to protect your order at an AI-enabled drive-through
- Read the visual display while ordering, especially sizes, flavors, substitutions and exclusions.
- Correct individual items as soon as you spot a mistake; if the system repeats itself or gets stuck, ask for a team member.
- Before leaving, check the final confirmation and receipt against what you ordered.
- If the price, promotion or availability looks wrong, resolve it with staff before driving away.
These checks do not establish whether FreshAI is more or less accurate than a person. They are practical safeguards because the reported 86% statistic does not answer that question—and does not reveal how often a completed, no-intervention order was silently wrong.
