Walmart’s U.S. unlocked-phone category brings together new and restored devices from multiple sellers, with prices and availability that change. It can be a useful place to compare options, but “unlocked” does not guarantee that a phone will work with every carrier. Before buying, check the exact model, its IMEI eligibility, network support, SIM type, seller, condition, warranty, and return terms.
What “unlocked” means—and what it doesn’t
An unlocked phone is not restricted to one carrier’s SIM or service in the way a carrier-locked phone is. But there are important distinctions:
- Factory-unlocked: Sold without being tied to a carrier. This is often the simplest starting point if you may switch networks.
- Carrier-unlocked: Originally sold for a particular carrier and later unlocked. It may still have regional, model, financing, or compatibility limitations.
- Carrier-locked: Restricted to its original carrier until that carrier’s unlocking requirements are met.
Even a genuinely unlocked phone may lack the bands or features a carrier requires, or its IMEI may not be accepted for activation. International and U.S. versions of the same phone can differ in network bands, eSIM behavior, and warranty coverage. Read the individual listing’s model number and specifications; don’t rely on the category label or product title alone.
Apple says iPhones purchased directly from Apple are unlocked, but that statement does not establish the status of every iPhone sold by another retailer or Marketplace seller. Check the Walmart listing itself. Apple’s iPhone purchase information explains its own policy.

How to browse Walmart’s unlocked phones
Start at Walmart’s unlocked-phone category. It is a changing assortment, not a curated list of phones with identical terms. Listings can include new, restored, and Marketplace devices; seeing a product in the category does not by itself mean it is new or sold directly by Walmart.
Use the available filters to narrow by brand, condition, storage, 5G, and SIM type, then open each product page. Check:
- Exact model number and whether it is a U.S. model.
- Whether the listing says factory unlocked, fully unlocked, or carrier unlocked—and whether those terms are explained.
- Condition, battery information, and included accessories.
- “Sold by” and “Shipped by,” seller rating, warranty provider, and return terms.
- Physical SIM and eSIM support, delivery or pickup details, and the total price.
Titles, specifications, and seller descriptions can conflict. If they do, ask the seller to clarify or choose a clearer listing. A large review count does not prove that the particular unit you receive matches every reviewer’s experience.

New, restored, or pre-owned?

Walmart describes its Restored items as professionally refurbished products that are inspected, tested, cleaned, and repaired where needed. Its grades include Premium, Like New, Good, and Fair; the grade and included accessories still need to be checked on the individual product page. Walmart’s policy says Restored Premium products have a like-new standard, at least 90% of like-new battery life where applicable, at least a one-year written warranty, and a 30-day return period, subject to listing-specific exceptions. For Restored Like New, Good, and Fair, Walmart states that products are inspected and tested for functionality and generally have free 90-day returns; warranty details may depend on the seller. Don’t assume every restored phone has Premium’s battery threshold or warranty. A cosmetic grade is not a substitute for an explicit battery-health statement.
For any Marketplace phone, review who is responsible for fulfillment, warranty claims, and return shipping. Check whether the seller explicitly guarantees compatibility with your carrier and whether the phone is free of outstanding financing or a blacklist restriction.
Verify carrier compatibility before buying
Make this the first filter, not a post-purchase surprise. Walmart advises checking unlock status, network bands, IMEI compatibility, and SIM requirements; its phone activation guidance also describes common activation problems. If you plan to use AT&T, its Bring Your Own Device page provides a compatibility check and emphasizes that the phone must be unlocked.

Identify whether you’ll use AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or an MVNO such as Cricket, Visible, US Mobile, Metro, or Walmart Family Mobile. An MVNO may have its own device and activation rules.
- Find the exact model number. “iPhone 15” or “Galaxy S25” alone may not identify the regional variant. If the listing does not provide the model, ask the seller before ordering.
- Check the carrier’s official BYOD or IMEI tool. Use the exact model or IMEI if available. A phone that appears to support the right bands can still be rejected for activation.
- Confirm network features. Check LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot, voicemail features, and any other service you rely on. A 5G label does not guarantee access to every carrier’s 5G network.
- Confirm lock status and SIM method. Verify that the phone is unlocked and that your carrier supports the exact device’s physical SIM, eSIM, or dual-SIM configuration.
- Keep the listing and return terms. Save the product details and check the return deadline before opening or activating the phone.
To find an IMEI, dial *#06#, look in the device’s About or device-information screen, or check the box or SIM tray. A dual-SIM phone may have two IMEIs; provide the one or both requested by the carrier. Enter the IMEI only in the intended carrier’s official checker or share it with trusted carrier support.

A physical nano-SIM is often straightforward to move between compatible phones. eSIM can make setup and multiple lines more convenient, but both the device and carrier must support that exact model. Some regional versions are eSIM-only, while dual-SIM capabilities may vary. Don’t assume eSIM compatibility just because the phone supports eSIM in another country.
Walmart-branded or other prepaid phones deserve extra care: a phone sold with a carrier service is not necessarily equivalent to a factory-unlocked device. Unlocking can depend on the carrier’s policy and the phone’s activation and payment history. For example, Verizon’s published unlocking policy has specific scope and dates; don’t generalize it to every prepaid or carrier-branded device.
iPhone or Android?
Choose an iPhone if you value Apple services and devices working together—such as iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, or Apple Watch—and prefer a relatively focused set of models. Recent iPhones can cost more, and an older restored model may have less battery life or less remaining software support. Also check the exact model’s SIM configuration and connector before buying accessories.

The trade-off is more model and regional variation, and software-update support differs by manufacturer and device. Check the support commitment for the exact model rather than assuming all Android phones receive the same updates.

For either platform, compare camera performance, display brightness and refresh rate, battery, storage, and the years of software support you expect to need—not just megapixels, model age, or the headline price.

Walmart’s category showed more than 1,000 listings in the research snapshot, with examples including a restored iPhone 15 around $380.99, a restored iPhone 12 around $168.99, a restored iPhone 14 around $263.85 and up, a Google Pixel 10a at $489, and a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 256GB at $969.99. These are illustrative prices observed on August 16, 2026—not guaranteed offers. Seller, storage, condition, color, location, stock, shipping, and promotions can change the price. Check the live category for current listings.
Think about value in terms of the phone’s useful life and risk as well as its upfront cost:
- Lowest upfront cost: An older restored phone may fit a tight budget, but weigh battery health, remaining updates, and compatibility.
- Better long-term value: A recent model with adequate storage, a healthy battery, carrier approval, and a meaningful support window may cost less over years of use.
- Premium value: A previous-generation flagship can be worth considering if its current price, software support, and condition make sense against the newest model.
- Lower purchase uncertainty: A new U.S.-model phone from a reputable seller with clear warranty and return terms reduces some condition risks, but still needs compatibility verification.
Storage also affects how long a phone remains practical. 64GB can be limiting if you keep lots of photos, video, games, or offline media; 128GB is a reasonable starting point for many people, while heavier users may prefer 256GB or more. Some Android phones accept a microSD card; iPhones generally require choosing capacity at purchase.

Compare the full cost, including required accessories, shipping, taxes, and any service or activation charges. An unlocked phone purchased outright can make switching carriers easier than a device tied to a carrier-financing agreement, but don’t assume every Walmart listing offers installment or trade-in terms.
Before you place the order
- Choose the carrier and verify the exact model through its official compatibility tool.
- Confirm unlocked status, U.S. model, bands, VoLTE, and physical-SIM or eSIM support.
- Read the condition grade and look for explicit battery-health information.
- Check seller, fulfillment, warranty issuer, return shipping, and return deadline.
- Confirm storage, included accessories, and remaining software support for the model.
- Save the listing details and compare the total price—not just the advertised price.
When the phone arrives: inspect, activate, and test promptly
- Photograph the package and condition before discarding anything. Confirm the model and storage, inspect for damage or signs of prior use, and keep the box and accessories.
- Record the IMEI privately and check it with your carrier. Don’t transfer personal data until you are satisfied that the device is the model and condition you ordered and can be activated.
- Back up your old phone. If moving a physical SIM, power down both phones before transferring it; for eSIM, follow your carrier’s activation steps.
- Use the carrier’s app, website, or support process to activate. Keep your old phone available until a number transfer is complete; incorrect account details, transfer PIN, or billing ZIP can delay a port.
- Test calls, texts, mobile data, 5G where available, voicemail, hotspot, Wi-Fi calling, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, microphones, speakers, charging, and any biometric unlock features you use.
- Install system and carrier updates, then restore your data. Confirm that the number and essential features work before relying on the phone as your only device.
Activation steps vary by carrier and device. Some features, including 5G, visual voicemail, or Wi-Fi calling, may require carrier provisioning even when basic service works.
If activation fails
- Recheck the IMEI and model number against the listing and carrier checker.
- Ask the carrier to confirm the phone is eligible, unlocked, and registered or provisioned on your line.
- Restart the phone and install available system or carrier settings updates.
- If using a physical SIM, check its size and condition or ask for a replacement. For eSIM, request a fresh activation profile or QR code from the carrier.
- Test the specific feature that is failing, such as calls or data, and ask the carrier about bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, or feature provisioning.
- If the carrier rejects the device or the seller’s description proves inaccurate, start the return promptly and keep your order records and packaging. A factory reset does not remove a carrier lock.
Walmart’s activation help recommends contacting the carrier when a line or IMEI needs updating. Don’t let troubleshooting consume the return window.
Returns and warranty: check before opening
Walmart’s policy identifies opened unlocked wireless phones as returnable within 14 days, but Marketplace and product-specific terms can differ. Confirm the exact rules on the listing and receipt before opening or activating the phone, and test it promptly. Warranty coverage is separate from the return window and can depend on the product grade and seller. Review Walmart’s current return-policy information alongside the listing.
Keep the packaging, accessories, and proof of purchase while testing. If returning a phone, remove personal information, sign out of Apple or Google accounts, disable any device lock or tracking feature as appropriate, and factory-reset it. Walmart advises erasing personal information before returning wireless devices and other electronics.
