Is Visual Studio 2022 free?
Visual Studio has multiple editions. Community is free in many individual, educational, open-source, and qualifying small-organization scenarios; Professional and Enterprise are paid editions aimed at users and organizations that need their features and licensing terms. Eligibility depends on how the software is used and who is using it, so organizations should review Microsoft’s Visual Studio licensing guidance. Unless the seller explicitly identifies a paid edition and provides a valid license, regard the $56 as a course price—not the price of Visual Studio. Do not buy a software key from an unfamiliar reseller on the assumption that it comes with the bundle.

A course’s compatibility depends less on its cover image than on its project requirements: the target .NET framework, SDK, project templates, NuGet packages, and C# features it uses. Ask whether lessons have been updated and whether projects work with the SDKs the instructor specifies. Older menu locations may differ in a newer IDE; an older target framework or dependency can create bigger problems than a changed button.
Visual Studio 2022 is a Windows IDE, not a native macOS Visual Studio experience. Mac learners can use a Windows installation, virtual machine, or remote Windows access if appropriate, or choose a cross-platform editor or IDE—but that may not match course instructions.
How to judge whether the curriculum is worth paying for
Evaluate each course by its syllabus and finished work, not by the number 15. A useful beginner path should progress from programming fundamentals into substantial projects and show how to build, test, document, and maintain them.
Check the foundations

Check whether projects are genuinely hands-on

If other languages are advertised, check how much instruction each actually receives rather than assuming every language gets a full course.
Compare course update dates, instructor background, prerequisites, and support arrangements with free Microsoft Learn material. A low price does not establish quality; several brief or outdated introductions may be less useful than one current course built around a complete project.
Install the IDE without installing everything
Use Microsoft’s official Visual Studio support and installation guidance to obtain and install Visual Studio. The installer’s workloads let you select tools for the type of development you plan to do.
- Download the appropriate Visual Studio installer from Microsoft, after confirming which version the course requires.
- Run the bootstrapper and accept Microsoft’s license terms and privacy statement.
- Select the workload that matches the course instead of installing every component. Examples include .NET desktop development for C# desktop apps, ASP.NET and web development for web apps and APIs, and Desktop development with C++ for native C++.
- Install the required SDKs and components, paying attention to the course’s target framework and project instructions.
- Create and run a small test project before starting the lessons; then put it in a Git repository.
Visual Studio 2022’s published requirements include 64-bit Windows and a 4 GB RAM minimum; Microsoft recommends planning for more memory for larger solutions and multiple tools. Storage needs vary substantially with workloads, SDKs, language packs, emulators, caches, and updates. - Organizations that need formal licensing, centralized administration, or enterprise support.
A course can teach techniques and help you make projects; it cannot guarantee recruiter interest, a particular salary, or a job. A more defensible personal milestone is a small portfolio of coherent applications with tests, readable documentation, meaningful Git history, and at least one demonstrable or deployed project.
