The headline refers to a July 2024 report, not Virgin Plus’s latest price change. MobileSyrup reported that Virgin Plus raised the monthly prices of most of its 4G plans by $5 to $10, including a $5 increase to its basic talk-and-text plan. The company also reportedly introduced a $39 Basic plan with 3GB of data at 3G speeds. Virgin Plus changed some advertised plan prices again in July 2026, but those later offers are separate from the 2024 report—and neither event proves that every existing customer’s plan price changed.
What Virgin Plus reportedly changed in July 2024
A July 4, 2024 MobileSyrup report said Virgin Plus raised the monthly prices of most of its 4G plans by $5 to $10. It also reported a $5 increase for the basic talk-and-text plan and the introduction of a Basic plan priced at $39 per month, with 3GB of data at 3G speeds, unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting.
The original MobileSyrup page is no longer available, so these figures should be treated as historical reported details, not a complete or independently verified plan-price table. The surviving information does not establish whether every quoted price included an autopay discount, whether promotional credits applied, or the exact date the higher prices took effect. July 4 is the report’s publication date; it should not be mistaken for the effective date on a customer’s bill.

For scale, a $5 monthly increase adds $60 a year before tax; a $10 increase adds $120. Across two lines, the equivalent increases would be $120 or $240 a year before tax. The actual bill can also include device payments, provincial taxes, 911 charges, add-ons, roaming and long-distance charges.

The 2026 prices are a later change
The 2024 story is not the latest Virgin Plus pricing news. Contemporary reports said the provider’s then-advertised BYOD offers were due to end July 2, 2026. On June 26, the reported prices were $40 for 20GB, $45 for 60GB and $50 for 60GB with Canada-U.S.-Mexico coverage. On July 3, a report listed replacement prices after autopay discounts:

The prices and offer end date were reported by iPhone in Canada on June 26 and July 3, 2026. They are dated market snapshots, not a guarantee of current availability or permanent rates. The reported data allowances did not increase with those prices. The $55 option’s distinction was Canada-U.S.-Mexico usage; the $50 option was Canada-only. That geographic coverage is not worldwide roaming, and it does not by itself establish the terms for international calls made from Canada.

Those later figures concern advertised offers. They do not show that a customer on an older or grandfathered plan was automatically moved to a new plan or charged the new in-market rate. Check the specific notice and account terms that apply to your line.

Separate an advertised plan-price change from an increase to your existing account. Virgin Plus’s price-change FAQ describes a particular increase applying to customers who received an April notification and were on month-to-month bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) service. It says Quebec customers were notified by letter or email and customers elsewhere in Canada through a message on their bill; the company says people who did not receive that notice were not affected by that particular increase. This notice-specific policy should not be read as proof of who was affected by the separate 2024 event.

To identify what changed, compare consecutive bills and review the account notice:
- Open the latest bill and find the monthly plan or wireless price plan charge. Compare it with an earlier bill.
- Look in the bill’s messages or notifications for a price-change notice, and note its stated effective date.
- Compare the plan price before and after any autopay discount. Advertised prices may assume autopay; losing the discount can raise the bill without changing the base plan.
- Check whether a promotional credit ended. A credit expiring can look like a plan-price increase even when the plan charge is unchanged.
- Keep device financing separate from the service charge, then account for taxes, provincial 911 fees, add-ons, roaming and long-distance charges.
- If the difference is still unclear, ask Virgin Plus to identify the exact notice, effective date and line item responsible.
Virgin Plus’s current plan page notes that provincial 911 fees can apply and change. A listed monthly plan rate is therefore not necessarily the all-in amount due. An offer labelled with an end date may be replaced for new sign-ups; the end date alone does not establish that an existing subscriber’s rate will automatically change.

Changing plans or leaving Virgin Plus
For month-to-month BYOD service, changing or cancelling is generally less complicated than it is when a device balance or other agreement is involved. Before switching, check whether a device-financing balance remains, whether a promotional credit depends on keeping the plan, and whether changing one line would affect a multi-line or family discount. A switch can be free of a formal cancellation fee and still alter a device obligation or remove a discount; confirm the account-specific terms before authorizing it.

That is a time-limited right tied to that specific notice, not a universal deadline for every price change.

There is also broader regulatory context. The CRTC announced on March 12, 2026, that it was eliminating extra fees that make it harder to activate, change or cancel cellphone and internet plans. Its notice setting out the new protections says they took effect June 12, 2026. These rules address fees that act as barriers to switching; they do not mean every device balance, financing amount or optional-product charge disappears. Compare the value, not just the monthly number
A lower headline price may not be a better deal if it lacks a feature you use. Compare offers on the same basis: price after autopay and before tax; data allowance and any speed limits; Canada-only versus Canada-U.S.-Mexico use; hotspot availability; calling and texting inclusions; roaming destinations; coverage at home, work and on regular travel routes; and any activation, SIM or eSIM requirements. Check how long a promotion lasts and whether the price depends on autopay or another condition.
Virgin Plus, Koodo and Fido can be useful comparisons for shoppers considering similar mainstream BYOD plans. A July 2026 comparison also cited a Public Mobile offer of $45 for 150GB with Canada-U.S.-Mexico coverage, but that is a time-sensitive report—not a current-price guarantee. Public Mobile may suit people comfortable with prepaid, self-serve service; compare support options and precise plan terms as well as the data figure. Freedom Mobile was noted in the same coverage for a different roaming proposition. Whether it is a fit depends on coverage where you live and travel. More data or a higher price does not establish faster service, better network priority or better coverage in a particular location. Nor does a Canada-U.S.-Mexico plan mean broad international roaming. Check plan terms and coverage maps for the places that matter to you; network ownership alone cannot establish the experience you will get.
