Yes—the Verizon promotion behind the “free Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro” headline was real, but it referred to two different offers from late 2023. The Pixel 8 was described as a buy-one-get-one deal; the Pixel 8 Pro offer required a qualifying Pixel trade-in, a new line, and Unlimited Ultimate. For the Pro, “free” meant promotional bill credits over 36 months, not a phone with no upfront or ongoing costs. The original promotion is not verified as active in August 2026.
What were the two Verizon offers?
Contemporaneous coverage published on December 8, 2023, described the Pixel 8 promotion as buy one Pixel 8 and get a second at no additional device cost, with an eligible Verizon Unlimited plan required. The Pixel 8 headline did not necessarily mean a customer could get one phone free: the reported offer required buying one to receive the second. The Pixel 8 Pro offer had different eligibility rules and should not be treated as the same promotion.
How the Pixel 8 BOGO offer was described
Under the reported Pixel 8 offer, a customer buying a Pixel 8 could receive a second Pixel 8 at no additional device cost, provided they had an eligible Verizon Unlimited plan. That structure is most useful to someone who needs two phones—for example, a household adding a second user. A person who needs only one device would still be buying the first phone to unlock the second-phone benefit.

The contemporaneous report does not establish the complete official terms, including exact eligible storage options, whether activation on a new line was necessary, or the detailed credit mechanics. Treat those specifics as unverified rather than assuming every Pixel 8 buyer qualified. The report also does not establish that this BOGO offer required a trade-in.
What the Pixel 8 Pro offer required

- Purchase the 128GB Pixel 8 Pro and meet the offer’s other requirements to receive promotional credits.
The “up to $1,900” figure covered the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Watch 2, and Galaxy Tab S9 FE 5G together; it was not the value of the phone alone. Verizon said the watch and tablet each required their own service line. Its announcement described up to $549.99 in device payments or promotional credit for the companion-device portion, with credits also spread across 36 months. The value of those devices does not eliminate their separate recurring service charges.
How “free” bill credits affect what you pay
Verizon described 0% APR device financing with promotional credits applied to the bill over 36 months. In practical terms, a customer is responsible for the device payment and receives offsetting credits over time, rather than having the phone’s cost erased at checkout. At the original $999.99 price, dividing the Pixel 8 Pro cost evenly over 36 months is about $27.78 per month before any promotional credit. Verizon’s indexed catalog has also shown the phone at $999.99 retail or about $27.77 per month for 36 months; catalog listings do not confirm the historical promotion is still available.
The phone credit is only one part of the bill. Budget separately for the required wireless plan, taxes and fees, activation charges, and any watch or tablet line you choose or are required to activate. The original announcement does not establish exact taxes, fees, or companion-line service prices, so those costs must be checked against the account-specific offer before signing up.
Verizon stated that promotional credits end if the customer stops meeting the requirements. If you cancel the line, move to an ineligible plan, or otherwise lose eligibility before month 36, you can lose future credits while remaining responsible for the unpaid device balance. That is a financial commitment tied to financing and recurring credits, even if it is not described as a traditional service contract. Before switching away, compare the remaining device balance with the credits you would forfeit.

How to decide whether the deal made financial sense
A large advertised credit is not automatically a saving. Compare the total cost of the service you would choose anyway with the cost of meeting the promotion’s conditions. A useful comparison is:

For the alternative, compare an unlocked Pixel purchase with a lower-cost carrier plan over the same 36 months. The unlocked route can mean paying more directly for the phone, but it avoids relying on a carrier credit schedule; whether it costs less depends on the current device price, service plan, and your actual usage. Verizon’s plan page, device offers, and trade-in program are places to check current terms, not proof that this 2023 promotion remains available.
The offer may fit if
- You already intend to use Verizon for the full 36-month credit period.
- You are adding a line anyway and can meet the plan and trade-in requirements for the Pro offer.
- You genuinely need two phones and can use both devices in the Pixel 8 BOGO structure.
- You want the watch or tablet and have accounted for the service line each requires.
The offer may not fit if
- You want only one Pixel 8 and would not otherwise buy a second phone.
- You are likely to switch carriers, cancel the line, or downgrade from the qualifying plan before the credits finish.
- The required plan costs more than the service you would otherwise choose, and the difference outweighs the device credits.
- You do not want the watch or tablet service lines, or cannot tolerate the 36-month credit schedule.
- You can meet your needs more cheaply by buying an unlocked Pixel and using a lower-cost plan.
Is the original promotion still available?
The verified offer dates to November and December 2023. As of August 2026, the original promotion is not confirmed as active. Verizon’s indexed catalog pages have shown Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro listings, but listings or financing prices alone do not establish current stock or eligibility for the old promotion. Check Verizon’s live offer and checkout terms before making a purchase; the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are older-generation models, so availability and configurations may vary.
