Yes, Verizon has run legitimate holiday promotions that made a phone, smartwatch and tablet effectively free—but not without conditions. In the cited 2024 promotion, Verizon used 36 months of promotional bill credits to offset the device payments. Customers also needed a qualifying phone trade-in, an eligible phone plan, and separate service lines for the watch and tablet.
That historical offer should not be treated as proof that the same bundle is available now. Device models, trade-in rules, plan requirements and deadlines change. Check Verizon’s current deals and the offer shown in your My Verizon account before ordering.
Which Verizon promotion does this claim describe?
The wording most closely matches Verizon’s holiday promotion announced for 2024. That offer advertised bundles for new and existing mobile customers, with devices covered through monthly promotional credits rather than an unconditional $0 purchase price.

See Verizon’s holiday announcement and terms for the dated details. Later promotions were different. For example, Android Central reported that a Samsung bundle promoted for Black Friday 2025 did not require a trade-in, but did require new service lines. A 2026 Samsung promotion likewise had its own plan and line requirements. Those offers should not be merged with the 2024 trade-in deal.

What “free” means
In carrier promotions, “free” usually means the device is financed at 0% APR and Verizon applies a matching promotional credit to the monthly device payment. The credit generally continues for 36 months only while the customer satisfies the offer’s conditions.
For the cited 2024 terms, the phone could receive up to $1,000 in promotional credits over 36 months. Apple Watch and iPad credits could cover up to $499.99 per device, while the Google and Samsung watch-and-tablet credits could reach $549.99 per device. These were maximum promotional amounts for that specific offer—not a promise that every device, trade-in or customer would receive those amounts.
The customer may still pay sales tax, government and regulatory charges, activation or upgrade fees, optional insurance, accessories and recurring service charges. “Free hardware” is therefore not the same as a $0 total cost.

The service cost can be larger than the device discount
The historical 2024 terms listed a phone line on Unlimited Ultimate at a stated minimum of $90 per month with Auto Pay, plus taxes and fees. They also listed a separate eligible watch line and tablet line at a stated minimum of $20 per month each with Auto Pay.

Using those historical figures only:
- Phone plan: $90 per month
- Watch line: $20 per month
- Tablet line: $20 per month
- Combined service: $130 per month before taxes, fees, discounts and optional extras
- 36-month illustration: $4,680 before taxes and fees
This is not the incremental cost for every household. An existing customer may already pay for a phone line, qualify for multi-line discounts or choose different current plans. The calculation demonstrates the key point: the devices can be offset by credits while the required service remains a substantial recurring expense. The historical prices above are not guaranteed August or September 2026 prices; verify the current cart.
Who qualified for the historical offer?
“Existing Verizon customer” did not automatically mean eligible. The cited promotion generally required the following:
- A new phone line or an eligible upgrade.
- A qualifying phone plan, historically including Unlimited Ultimate for the cited phone offer.
- A qualifying trade-in for the phone bundles described in Verizon’s announcement.
- For an upgrade, a phone that had been active on the account for at least 60 days before trade-in.
- A new eligible connected-device line for the watch.
- A new eligible connected-device line for the tablet.
- Compliance with Auto Pay, timing, device-payment and other offer-specific conditions.
A current customer may instead need to add a line, port in a number, change plans or meet a different upgrade condition. The eligibility result shown after signing in to Verizon is more reliable than a general headline.
What phones can be traded in?
For the cited 2024 holiday bundles, Verizon specified smartphones from Apple, Google or Samsung for the relevant trade-in offer. The exact qualifying models, storage versions and condition standards were promotion-specific.

Verizon’s general trade-in program accepts categories including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, basic phones, mobile hotspots, netbooks and certain prepaid phones. That broader list does not mean every accepted device qualifies for the maximum promotional credit.
Keep three concepts separate:
- General trade-in eligibility: Verizon will accept the device category under its trade-in program.
- Promotional eligibility: The model, condition, account and offer qualify for promotional credits.
- Maximum value: The device qualifies for the highest advertised credit tier.
A phone may have ordinary trade-in value but fail to qualify for a particular holiday bonus. Read the live promotion’s device list and condition definitions rather than relying on a phrase such as “any phone” or “any condition.”
Does every Verizon bundle require a trade-in?
No. The 2024 holiday phone bundles described by Verizon required a qualifying trade-in, but later bundles could use a different structure. Android Central’s November 2025 report described a Samsung phone, watch and tablet bundle that did not require a trade-in but did require new service lines. A later 2026 Samsung offer also reportedly used qualifying plans and additional lines rather than the same trade-in terms.
Always identify the exact promotion year and read its terms. “Verizon offers a free phone, watch and tablet” is too broad to establish whether a trade-in is needed.

How to complete the trade-in safely
Verizon’s general process is to identify the device and condition, back up and erase personal data, and mail the device—generally within 30 days—so the credit can be applied after receipt. The deadline in the specific promotion or order confirmation controls if it differs.
- Record the phone’s IMEI and photograph its front, back and sides while it is working.
- Back up your data and perform a factory reset.
- Remove Apple Find My, Google device protection and any other activation lock.
- Save the offer screen, trade-in estimate, order confirmation and promotion code.
- Use Verizon’s packaging or shipping instructions and keep the tracking receipt.
- Confirm that Verizon received the device and monitor the account for the expected credits.
Trade-ins are generally final after Verizon accepts the device and the customer accepts the credit; the old phone may not be recoverable. Do not ship a valuable phone until the new order and trade-in submission are documented.

If you cancel the qualifying phone, watch or tablet line, leave Verizon, upgrade early or move to a plan that is not eligible, the promotional credits may stop. The remaining device-payment balance can then become payable under the financing agreement.

Before canceling or changing a line, compare the remaining promotional credits with the savings from the cheaper plan or the cost of leaving. A cheaper plan can cost more overall if it causes the credits to disappear.
When is the deal a good fit?
The promotion may make sense if you already expect to stay with Verizon for the full 36 months, need a new phone, genuinely want cellular service on both companion devices, have an old phone with limited private-sale value and would otherwise choose a similar plan.
It is a weaker fit if you only want the phone, would use the watch or tablet on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, may switch carriers within three years, must move to a much more expensive plan, or can sell the old phone privately for substantially more than Verizon’s trade-in value.
How to compare Verizon with buying unlocked
Do not compare the retail prices of three devices with “$0.” Compare the full cost of the alternatives:
- Required Verizon service over the credit period.
- Any increase over your current phone-plan cost.
- Separate watch and tablet line charges.
- Taxes, fees, insurance, accessories and activation charges.
- The private-sale value you give up by trading in the old phone.
- The remaining device balance and lost credits if you leave early.
For some households, buying an unlocked phone from Apple, Samsung or Google and choosing a lower-cost service plan offers more flexibility. A Wi-Fi-only tablet or Bluetooth-only watch can also avoid two additional cellular lines, although those devices will not have independent mobile connectivity away from the phone.

Before submitting payment or shipping your old phone, confirm all of the following in Verizon’s live offer and cart:
