Verizon’s promotions may make the iPhone 16 Pro, Google Pixel 9 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S25+ cost $0 per month after bill credits, but they are not instantly free phones. The usual structure is a 36-month device-payment agreement with promotional credits that require a qualifying plan, trade-in, new line, switch or other offer-specific condition.
The named phones come from an earlier Verizon promotion, while current inventory increasingly features newer iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy generations. Treat these models as deals to check—not guaranteed current offers. The final authority is the offer shown in your Verizon cart or My Verizon account.

Verizon’s original announcement linked the iPhone 16 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25+ with its Unlimited Ultimate tier and a qualifying Apple, Google or Samsung trade-in. Those historical terms should not be assumed to remain unchanged. Verizon’s current deals may instead emphasize newer iPhone 17, Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 devices, according to current deal coverage from Tom’s Guide and Android Central.

What “free” means on Verizon
Most Verizon free-phone promotions work like this:
- You agree to a device-payment plan, generally 36 monthly installments at 0% APR, subject to financing approval.
- Verizon applies a promotional credit to your bill each month.
- The credit is designed to offset the device installment.
- You receive the full promotional value only while you satisfy the offer’s requirements.
That means a phone advertised at $0 per month can still involve taxes, activation or upgrade fees, accessories, plan charges and a temporary device charge before credits appear. Verizon says promotional credits may take one or two billing cycles to show up.
Paying off the phone early generally stops the promotional credits. Canceling the line, moving to an ineligible plan or upgrading early can also eliminate future credits and leave you responsible for the remaining device balance. Do you need a trade-in?
There is no universal answer. Verizon promotions generally fall into three categories:
- Trade-in required: You send in an eligible phone to receive the advertised promotional credits.
- No trade-in required: Some offers qualify through a new line, switch, plan selection or another condition.
- Broad-condition offers: A promotion may advertise “any phone” or “any condition,” but detailed rules can still restrict the manufacturer, line type, account status, financing, device ownership or inspection result.
Existing-customer trade-ins may require the device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. New customers can generally trade in a device from another carrier if it meets the specific offer’s requirements. A financed phone usually must be paid off before trade-in, although special promotions can create exceptions. Check Verizon’s trade-in FAQ and trade-in terms for the exact offer.

Which Verizon plan qualifies?
Plan eligibility is offer-specific and can change. The historical named-flagship promotion associated the iPhone 16 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25+ with Unlimited Ultimate. Less expensive phones in that announcement had broader eligibility.
Do not assume that a phone is free on every Verizon plan. At checkout, confirm:
- the exact plan name and monthly price;
- whether Auto Pay or paper-free billing is required;
- whether the deal requires a new line or port-in;
- whether existing customers must upgrade their plan;
- whether taxes and fees are included;
- the length and amount of the promotional credits.
A $0 device can be a poor financial choice if it requires a more expensive plan than you would otherwise buy. Compare the entire phone-and-service cost, not just the device installment.

New Verizon customer versus existing customer
New customers
A switcher may need to add a new line, port in a number, choose a qualifying plan, trade in a phone and pass Verizon’s financing requirements. The offer may also include a separate gift-card incentive. A phone from another carrier may qualify as a trade-in if it meets the promotion’s conditions.

Existing Verizon customers
An existing customer may see different pricing or no eligibility for the public switcher offer. The account may need an upgrade-eligible line, a qualifying plan, a device active on Verizon for 60 days or a paid-off phone. Personalized promotions may appear only after signing in to My Verizon.
Calculate the real 36-month cost
Use this formula before accepting any “free” phone:
36-month phone cost
+ 36 months of required plan charges
+ taxes and regulatory fees
+ activation or upgrade fee
+ required down payment
+ remaining device balance if credits are forfeited
- trade-in value or gift-card credit

- Verizon with your existing plan, if the phone qualifies.
- An unlocked phone plus a lower-cost carrier plan.
- Keeping your current phone and changing only service.
Also estimate what your trade-in is worth if sold privately. Trading in an older or damaged phone may be sensible, but a recent iPhone Pro or premium Galaxy could be worth more on the resale market than Verizon’s effective promotional value.

What happens if you leave Verizon early?
Important: The 36-month term is not a traditional service contract, but it is a commitment if you want all the credits.
- Cancel the promoted line: Future credits stop, and the remaining device balance may become due.
- Change to an ineligible plan: Verizon may remove future promotional credits.
- Pay off the phone early: Promotional credits generally end.
- Upgrade early: Unpaid credits may be forfeited under the offer’s rules.
- Transfer a line: Account transfers can have separate consequences; review Verizon’s service-transfer guidance.
The phone is economically “free” only if you remain eligible long enough to receive the complete credit stream.

- Record the phone’s IMEI, storage and physical condition.
- Back up your data.
- Sign out of your Apple, Google or Samsung account.
- Disable Find My iPhone, Activation Lock and equivalent security features.
- Remove the SIM and memory card.
- Photograph the phone from every side.
- Use Verizon’s supplied label or shipping kit.
- Ship it by the stated deadline.
- Keep the tracking number and trade-in submission ID.
- Check your bills for the credit after one or two billing cycles.

- the screen or back panel is cracked;
- the phone does not power on;
- the battery is swollen, leaking or dangerously hot;
- Activation Lock remains enabled;
- the IMEI, model or storage does not match the submission;
- the phone arrives late or is never received;
- the device is still financed;
- it is reported lost or stolen;
- the wrong label, kit or device is used.
A rejected promotional trade-in may receive only its market value, if any, rather than the advertised promotional value. Verizon’s trade-in terms control the outcome.
When Verizon’s deal is worth considering
The promotion may make sense when you already want Verizon service, would choose the required plan anyway, can remain for all 36 months and do not plan to upgrade early. It can also be attractive when the trade-in phone has little private-sale value and Verizon’s coverage or included benefits matter to you.
It is usually a poor fit when you are switching only for the phone, need an unlocked device immediately, change carriers frequently, want a low-cost prepaid or MVNO plan, have a valuable phone to sell, or would need to add an unnecessary line. It is also risky if delayed credits or billing disputes would create financial strain.
How to verify the offer before you order
- Open Verizon’s current deals page or the free-phone category.
- Select the exact storage size and color you want.
- Choose whether you are switching, adding a line or upgrading.
- Enter the exact trade-in model and condition.
- Review the plan and its full monthly price.
- Expand the device-payment details and confirm the monthly credit, term and total device balance.
- Read what happens if you cancel, change plans, pay off early or upgrade.
- Save screenshots or a copy of the final offer.
Availability can vary by account, ZIP code, storage configuration, inventory and date. The live checkout terms—not an old headline or a generalized deal list—determine what you will actually receive.
Bottom line
Verizon’s iPhone 16 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25+ promotions can be genuine $0-per-month deals, but only after a long stream of qualifying bill credits. They are best for customers who already want Verizon and can keep the qualifying line and plan for 36 months. If you value flexibility, early upgrades or a cheaper service plan, compare an unlocked phone and the value of your trade-in before calling the Verizon offer a bargain.
