Yes—Verizon announced a real, one-time $20 account credit for customers affected by its widespread wireless outage on January 14, 2026. The credit was not an automatic payment to every Verizon subscriber: eligible customers were told to sign in to the My Verizon app and accept the offer. Verizon said small-business customers would be contacted directly.

The offer is separate from Verizon’s ordinary outage-credit policy. Because Verizon’s public materials do not establish a current redemption deadline or guarantee that late requests are still being accepted, check My Verizon or contact Verizon through an official support channel before assuming the offer has expired.

What Verizon promised

The outage occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, and affected Verizon wireless voice calls, text messaging and mobile data for many customers. Some phones displayed “SOS” or could not connect to the network. Verizon said service was restored at approximately 10:15 p.m. Eastern time.

On January 15, Verizon announced a $20 account credit for “those affected” by the outage. The company described the credit as a goodwill measure and said it was not intended to make up fully for the disruption. Verizon’s announcement is available in its network-outage update.

Was the Verizon credit automatic?

No. Verizon said customers would receive a text message when the credit became available, then redeem it by signing in to the My Verizon app and accepting the offer. That makes it an opt-in account credit—not an automatic cash payment or a universal refund for every Verizon customer.

App screens and labels may have changed since January. Look for an outage-credit notification, offer or banner in My Verizon rather than relying on an old menu path.

Who qualified for the $20 credit?

Verizon used the terms “those affected” and “any customer affected.” Its public announcement did not provide a detailed definition stating:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • how long an individual customer had to lose service;
  • whether losing calls, texts or data alone was sufficient;
  • whether eligibility depended on location, network records or device registration;
  • whether prepaid customers qualified;
  • whether each line on a family plan received a separate credit; or
  • whether customers who contacted support independently received the same offer.

Accordingly, it is not accurate to say that every Verizon subscriber qualified. Customers who experienced only intermittent service, were traveling, used prepaid service or switched carriers afterward should ask Verizon to check their specific account rather than assume either eligibility or ineligibility.

For small-business accounts, Verizon said customers would be contacted directly. Business customers should not assume that the consumer-app process is the only or correct redemption route.

How to check for and accept the credit

  1. Open the official My Verizon app and sign in to the account associated with the affected service.
  2. Check the account overview, notifications, messages and billing areas for the outage-credit offer.
  3. Review the terms shown in the account and accept the $20 credit if it is available.
  4. Check billing activity or a subsequent bill to confirm that the credit posted.

Do not treat a text message as proof that a link is safe. Open My Verizon directly instead of tapping an unsolicited link, particularly if the message asks for sensitive information or payment.

What to do if the credit is missing

A missing offer can mean different things: Verizon may not have identified the account as affected, the offer may have been placed on another account, the credit may already have posted, or the account may need a support review.

  1. Verify the account. Make sure you are signed in to the correct Verizon account and that the affected line is attached to it.
  2. Search the account. Check notifications, messages, account activity and recent or pending bills.
  3. Refresh the app. Update or restart My Verizon, sign out and sign in again, and check once more.
  4. Contact Verizon officially. Use the My Verizon app, Verizon’s support website or the phone number printed on your bill.
  5. Use precise wording. Ask the representative to check eligibility for the “January 14, 2026 network-outage credit.”

If an offer was accepted but does not appear on the bill, describe it as a billing-posting problem. If no offer appears at all, ask support to verify eligibility. Verizon’s general outage guidance also recommends checking My Verizon for outage notifications.

As of the public information reviewed through August 18, 2026, there is no verified public deadline establishing whether every customer can still redeem the special $20 offer. Do not assume that Verizon will honor a late request—but do not assume the opportunity is closed without checking the account or contacting official support.

Is it $20 per line or per account?

Verizon’s announcement calls the payment a “$20 account credit.” That wording supports describing it as a credit for an eligible account, not as $20 for every phone or line on a multi-line plan.

The public announcement does not establish a line-by-line calculation. Customers with multiple affected lines should ask Verizon how the offer applies to their particular account. Anecdotes from other customers are not a substitute for Verizon’s account-specific terms.

How the special credit differs from Verizon’s normal outage policy

Verizon’s ordinary mobile service-credit guidance is a separate policy. It generally says a standard monthly-plan customer may qualify when:

  • service was lost in the customer’s coverage area;
  • the loss lasted more than 24 consecutive hours;
  • Verizon was at fault; and
  • the customer contacted Verizon within 180 days.

That policy does not mean every outage automatically produces a $20 payment. Nor does the 180-day contact period automatically prove that the special January credit remains available for 180 days. The $20 offer was an incident-specific goodwill credit with its own redemption process.

Verizon publishes separate rules for other services, including Fios TV. Those rules should not be imported into a wireless-outage claim. See Verizon’s special outage-credit FAQ and general wireless-outage guidance for the applicable service information.

What happened during the outage?

Verizon initially attributed the disruption to a software issue, although the company’s public update did not provide a detailed independently verified technical root cause. Reports described a widespread outage lasting at least 10 hours, with customers unable to make calls, send texts or use mobile data. The outage was resolved at about 10:15 p.m. ET, according to Verizon.

The disruption affected more than ordinary browsing. A wireless outage can interrupt SMS-based two-factor authentication, navigation, ride-hailing, workplace communications and access to account-recovery codes. Customers whose devices showed SOS mode may have been unable to use Verizon’s network even if the phone itself was functioning normally.

Why the FCC investigated

The Federal Communications Commission described the outage as lasting at least 10 hours and affecting millions of customers. The FCC opened a review seeking information about the outage’s effect on 911 calling, public-safety entities and government agencies. Its notice raises serious public-safety questions, but it does not establish that every 911 call failed nationwide.

The distinction matters: the FCC’s action documents an investigation into possible effects on emergency communications; it is not proof of universal 911 failure. The FCC notice is available here.

How to avoid outage-credit scams

The Verizon offer was real, but criminals can imitate legitimate outage notices. To check an offer safely:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open the My Verizon app or type Verizon’s official website address yourself.
  • Do not provide your password, one-time verification code, Social Security number or card details to claim a routine account credit.
  • Inspect links carefully and avoid destinations outside official Verizon domains.
  • Ignore requests for a fee to “unlock” or release the credit.
  • Contact Verizon through the app, official website or the number on your bill if a message seems suspicious.

Not every text about the outage is necessarily fraudulent, but a message should never override the safer practice of verifying the offer inside your account.

What to do during a future outage

After Verizon reports that service has been restored, restart the device and check that Airplane Mode is off. Verizon’s support guidance also recommends checking outage notifications, reviewing network settings and using Wi-Fi Calling where available.

For emergencies, use Wi-Fi Calling, another carrier’s phone, text or supported satellite SOS features when available. A future account credit is not a substitute for a backup way to communicate, and the January credit does not guarantee compensation for business losses or other consequential costs.

Bottom line

Verizon’s $20 outage credit was genuine, but it was a special one-time account credit for customers Verizon considered affected by the January 14, 2026 wireless outage. It was not automatic, it was not clearly documented as $20 per line, and it should not be confused with Verizon’s normal service-credit policy. Check My Verizon first; if the offer is missing, ask official Verizon support specifically about the January 14 outage credit.
