Yes—the $20 Verizon outage credit was real. Verizon announced it on January 15, 2026, after a nationwide wireless outage on January 14, and directed affected customers to sign in to My Verizon and accept a one-time account credit. The announcement is months old, so “yesterday’s outage” refers to January 14, 2026—not a current outage. Verizon has not established in its public announcement that the offer remains available now.
What happened—and when
On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Verizon wireless customers across the United States reported service problems, including phones showing “SOS” and difficulty making calls or sending texts. Verizon said service was restored at approximately 10:15 p.m. Eastern that night and advised customers who still had trouble to restart their devices. The next day, Verizon announced a $20 credit for affected customers. Verizon’s outage update is the primary source for the offer and its redemption instructions.
Verizon said the disruption was caused by a software issue and that it found no indication of a cybersecurity incident, according to contemporaneous reporting. That explanation is Verizon’s account of the cause, not an independent finding.

Verizon did not publish a permanent, exact menu path or promise that every account would see the same button. Its stated process was to sign in to My Verizon and accept the offer. The app’s layout and labels can vary, and the January offer may no longer appear.

- Open the My Verizon app directly and sign in to the account associated with the affected service.
- Look for an outage-credit notification, banner, message, or action prompt.
- Review the displayed terms, then accept or confirm the $20 account credit if it is offered.
- Check the account or billing area for confirmation that the credit was applied.
Verizon said customers would receive a text when the credit became available. That notification did not mean the credit was necessarily automatic: customers were instructed to sign in and accept it. Some customers also reported receiving a redemption link or needing help from support, but those reports do not establish a universal process. Contemporary reporting described the rollout.
Was it $20 per line?
Available reporting described the offer as generally one $20 credit per account, not $20 for every affected phone line. A family plan with several lines should not assume it will receive a separate credit for each one. Verizon’s account-specific terms or confirmation from Verizon support are the best guide for an individual account. Tom’s Guide’s coverage reported the per-account interpretation.

No credit showing? What to do
The public announcement did not include a complete eligibility checker, universal deadline, or detailed rules for every account type. If you believe the offer should have applied to your account but cannot find it:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Make sure you are signed in to the primary account, rather than a secondary line profile.
- Update or reopen My Verizon, then sign out and back in. Check both the app and any Verizon text or in-app notifications.
- Contact Verizon through its official support chat, phone support, or support social account. Ask specifically about the January 14, 2026 nationwide outage credit.
- Keep screenshots of relevant notifications and support conversations. If an agent says a credit was applied, ask for a case or interaction number and check the account again.
Customers reported missing banners and delayed credits, and some said support agents helped apply them manually. Those are anecdotal accounts, not a published Verizon policy; see the Verizon community discussion for examples. The absence of a text alone does not prove either eligibility or ineligibility.
Account types and other edge cases
- Business accounts: Verizon said small-business customers would be contacted directly, so consumer-app instructions may not apply.
- Prepaid customers: The public announcement does not clearly define prepaid eligibility. Confirm directly with Verizon rather than assuming the offer applied.
- Multiple-line plans: The reported structure was one credit per account, not per line. The account owner is the person most likely to manage an account-level offer.
- Fios customers: This offer concerned a wireless network outage. The announcement does not establish eligibility for Fios-only customers or describe ordinary Fios outage credits.
- Former customers or customers unsure they were affected: The public announcement does not spell out how canceled accounts or every edge case were handled. Ask Verizon to check the specific account; do not assume all customers qualified.
Protect yourself from fake credit messages
The offer’s legitimacy does not make every text claiming to deliver it safe. Avoid clicking an unexpected link when you can open My Verizon yourself. Treat as suspicious any message that asks you to disclose your password, one-time verification code, account PIN, Social Security number, or payment-card details; pay a fee to release the credit; or install remote-access software. A credit should not require you to send money. PCWorld’s coverage also warned readers about fraudulent links.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the $20 credit did—and did not—cover
Verizon presented the credit as a goodwill measure and said it was not intended to fully make up for the disruption. It was an account adjustment, not a cash refund or a verified reimbursement for lost wages, missed business, emergency expenses, or other consequential losses. Customers with larger losses can contact Verizon, but the announcement did not promise additional compensation. Review the actual offer terms rather than assuming that accepting the credit has any particular effect on other claims.
