The “coming soon” project described by Computerworld on October 5, 2022 was Velocity Network. Its permissioned mainnet launched on March 1, 2022, and the Foundation now describes the network as live. It is designed to let recognized organizations issue digitally signed career credentials that people store in a wallet and share selectively—not to automatically determine whether every statement on a résumé is true.

What Velocity Network actually validates

Velocity Network is governed by the nonprofit Velocity Network Foundation and developed with Velocity Career Labs. Its unit of trust is an issuer-signed credential. Potential examples include:

  • Identity records
  • Employment history
  • Degrees, transcripts and courses
  • Professional licenses and work permits
  • Certifications, badges and assessment results
  • Formally attested skills and other qualifications

An employer, school, licensing authority, assessment provider or government body must issue the credential. A résumé remains a collection of claims: only claims backed by an authoritative issuer are verifiable through this system. Statements such as “excellent leader” or “managed a large team” are not automatically validated unless a credible organization defines and attests to them.

The Foundation’s description of organizational participation is available at its participation page.

How the issuer–holder–verifier flow works

  1. Issuer: An approved employer, school, government agency, certification body or assessment provider creates and signs a credential.
  2. Holder: The individual claims the credential into a Career Wallet and controls whether to share it.
  3. Verifier: An employer or another relying party checks the credential’s cryptographic proof, issuer and current status.
  4. Network: The ledger supplies verification keys, proofs and status information. The underlying résumé or credential data is intended to remain off-chain.

The network is described as a public, permissioned blockchain: participation and governance depend on approved organizations rather than anonymous, unrestricted access. The Foundation announced the mainnet launch on March 1, 2022; its announcement said the initial group operated 28 nodes as of January 1, 2022. Those are historical launch figures, not a current adoption count. See the launch announcement.

What a job seeker does with Career Wallet

The Career Wallet is described as free. The official FAQ outlines this process:

  1. Install the wallet and choose the credential type.
  2. Search for a connected employer, school or other issuer.
  3. Provide the identity information that issuer requests.
  4. Review available credential offers and accept the ones you want.
  5. Store them in the wallet and share selected credentials through a link or QR code.

Some issuers may charge their own fee, comparable to a school charging for an official transcript. Wallet access itself is not presented as a paid subscription. Credentials are stored privately on the user’s device, with cloud backup through the storage service the user selects, according to the FAQ.

If your issuer is not connected

You cannot obtain a normal issuer-backed credential from an organization that has not joined the network. The wallet can contain self-reported credentials, but the FAQ distinguishes those from authority-issued records. Employers should therefore treat a wallet as potentially containing both verified credentials and ordinary profile claims.

Sharing with an employer outside the network

An unconnected employer may receive a link or QR code and use the Foundation’s verification website. Issuing credentials and automating requests generally require the organization to participate and connect its systems. Technical ability to open a link does not guarantee that an employer accepts the format in its hiring process.

What blockchain contributes—and what it cannot do

A shared ledger can provide a common verification layer, tamper-evident proofs and revocation or status tracking across different HR and education systems. It can reduce dependence on one central database administrator and make a credential easier to carry between organizations.

It cannot establish that an issuer’s original record was accurate, that an issuer was legitimate, or that a job title and responsibilities were described fairly. An issuer can sign an incorrect record, and the ledger can preserve evidence of that incorrect issuance. Trust still depends on issuer identity, source-record quality, identity matching, governance and a workable correction process.

Privacy, control and operational risks

Velocity’s stated design includes private wallet storage, selective disclosure, user permission before sharing, no underlying personal information directly on the blockchain, and credential revocation. These are architecture and policy claims; they do not make every wallet, backup, integration or receiving employer risk-free.

  • Wrong issuer record: The individual must seek correction from the issuer; blockchain immutability does not make the source record correct.
  • Revocation or expiry: A verifier must check current status. A credential that was once valid may later be revoked, superseded or expired.
  • Lost device or wallet access: Recovery, backup and key management remain practical responsibilities. Keep conventional copies of transcripts, licenses and employment records.
  • Excessive disclosure: Review the fields requested and the recipient. A selective-sharing design does not guarantee that every workflow asks for only necessary data.
  • Participant failure: If an issuer, wallet provider or node operator leaves, users need to know how previously issued credentials, verification and revocation services will continue. The public materials do not provide a complete independent business-continuity analysis.

Adoption matters more than the blockchain

For a job seeker, the decisive question is whether the actual employers, schools and licensing bodies in their career are connected—and whether target employers accept the resulting credentials. The ecosystem also depends on background-screening companies, HR software vendors, job boards, wallet providers, node operators and authoritative credential issuers.

Rank #4

The Foundation describes an organizational process of applying, connecting systems, registering the organization, and then issuing or verifying credentials at its participation page. Early reporting and the launch announcement mentioned organizations including Aon, Oracle, SAP, UKG, ZipRecruiter, HireRight, Randstad and others. Those historical lists should not be read as a complete current membership list.

Credits, payments and the token question

The project describes an incentive and payment model involving Velocity Credits, payment rails and, on current Foundation pages, a $VELOCITY token. Broadly, issuing organizations may receive credits or rewards, while verification can carry a charge for participating organizations. The 2022 launch materials and organizational user agreement describe those mechanics.

The reviewed sources do not establish a current public token price, exchange listing or consumer investment opportunity. Do not treat the token as a proven cryptocurrency investment, or assume job seekers must buy it to use the free wallet. Public pages also do not provide a clear standardized price list for organizational participation.

Legal and compliance questions

Employment credentials can involve consent, purpose limitation, data minimization, correction, retention, deletion, cross-border transfers and fair-chance or anti-discrimination rules. Where background-screening activity falls within the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act, the parties still need to meet that law’s requirements. An immutable or permissioned ledger does not create automatic compliance with every privacy or employment rule.

Actual compliance depends on the participants, contracts, jurisdictions, data flows and implementation. The Foundation frames the network for regulated employment and labor-market uses, but that is not a blanket legal guarantee. Organizations should document who issued each record, what consent was obtained, how disputes are corrected and how long data and proofs remain available. The Foundation’s current overview is at Velocity Is Live.

How it compares with ordinary verification

Approach Issuer and control Portability and limits
Velocity credential Recognized organization signs a credential; holder stores and shares it Portable when issuers and employers support the format; self-reported entries remain unverified
Direct employer or university check Source organization responds to each request Authoritative but often repetitive and slower for the applicant
Official transcript or licensing portal School or regulator controls its own record Strong source authority, but usually limited to one institution or jurisdiction
Background-screening service Screening provider gathers and reports records under applicable rules Useful for employers; may involve fees, consent and correction procedures
LinkedIn or ATS profile User or employer supplies profile data Convenient for recruiting, but not inherently issuer-verified
Other verifiable-credential platforms Issuers sign standards-based credentials, potentially without one specific blockchain Interoperability and employer acceptance vary by platform and implementation

A practical checklist before relying on it

  • Check whether your relevant employers, schools and licensing bodies issue through Velocity.
  • Ask prospective employers whether they accept the credential format and verification link.
  • Keep ordinary copies of records and a conventional résumé for applicant-tracking systems and interviews.
  • Label self-reported entries as unverified and never present them as issuer-backed.
  • Inspect every field before sharing a link or QR code.
  • Read the wallet’s current recovery and backup instructions before storing important records.
  • Ask who pays any issuance or verification fee and whether the amount is recurring.
  • Do not pay an unverified third party promising “blockchain résumé validation.”

Bottom line

Velocity Network is live infrastructure for portable, issuer-signed career credentials, not an automatic truth machine for complete résumés. It can make degrees, employment records, licenses and assessments easier to present and check when the relevant organizations participate. Its usefulness—and its cost, privacy and compliance profile—depends on issuer quality, employer acceptance, wallet security and the governance of the permissioned network. The mere presence of blockchain does not verify an unsupported claim.
