The University of Washington is one of eight universities in the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps Hub Northwest, a five-year, $15 million network that trains academic teams to test whether research-based technologies can meet real-world needs. UC Berkeley leads the hub; UW’s participation is administered by CoMotion.

What UW was selected for

The NSF I-Corps Hub Northwest is a regional training and commercialization network, not a new building or a $15 million award to UW alone. The National Science Foundation lists the hub under award 2430389, with UC Berkeley as the lead institution. The $15 million supports the eight participating institutions over five years, according to UW’s announcement. CoMotion, UW’s innovation and technology-commercialization organization, administers the university’s role.

The other participating institutions are the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Oregon State University, and the University of California campuses at Davis, Irvine, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, alongside UC Berkeley and UW. The network draws on research and regional expertise across Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

How the training works

NSF I-Corps focuses on customer discovery: researchers speak with potential customers, users, industry participants and other stakeholders to test assumptions about a technology’s purpose and market. Interviews can confirm a need, reveal a different use or customer, prompt a change in the idea—or show that commercialization is not the right path. The aim is to gather evidence before a team commits heavily to a product or business model.

UW describes its regional course as a four-week workshop with weekly instruction, mentorship, office hours, practice pitches and presentations of work for feedback. Teams are expected to conduct at least 20 customer-discovery interviews, including at least five new interviews per week, and to prepare a short summary of findings and a five-minute presentation. The stated workload is about 20–25 hours per week. Details are on CoMotion’s program page.

That time requirement is a meaningful consideration: the course is not just a lecture series. Researchers need room in their schedules to arrange and conduct interviews alongside laboratory, teaching, clinical, coursework or employment commitments.

Who may apply, and what it costs

UW says the regional program is intended for faculty, researchers, postdoctoral researchers, students and staff affiliated with an academic or research institution in the Northwest. Teams generally have two to four members, and prior business or commercialization experience is not required. The hub’s broad regional footprint does not mean every applicant automatically qualifies; check the current course instructions for the specific eligibility rules.

There is no cost to attend the regional program, according to UW. Free attendance does not mean no practical cost: participants must be able to make the substantial weekly time commitment and speak with people outside their research group.

Focus areas and what participants receive

UW’s announcement identifies medical technology, agricultural and food technology, blue technology, and energy, environmental and clean technology as regional priority areas. These are focus areas, not necessarily an exhaustive list of technologies eligible for every course.

Participants receive structured training, feedback, mentorship and help evaluating commercialization possibilities. The regional program is not described as a direct research grant, and participation does not guarantee a startup, patent, license, follow-on funding, regulatory approval or market success. Teams may conclude that they need to refine their idea—or that it should not be commercialized.

CoMotion can also help UW-affiliated innovators navigate institution-specific issues such as intellectual property, licensing, conflicts of interest and startup formation. The hub’s regional connections complement rather than replace those university processes.

Regional course versus national NSF I-Corps

The UW-hosted regional course is distinct from the national NSF I-Corps program. Completing a regional hub course may make a team eligible to apply to the national program, but the national course has its own requirements and application process. UW describes it as a seven-week program involving about 100 customer-discovery interviews and a potential $50,000 NSF customer-discovery grant. That amount is associated with the national pathway; it is not an automatic payment to everyone who takes the regional course.

Application timing

As of August 18, 2026, UW’s program page lists the Summer 2026 regional course as closed and says applications for the UW-hosted Fall 2026 program are scheduled to open August 19, 2026. Dates and availability can change, so prospective applicants should verify current details on CoMotion’s NSF I-Corps Hub Northwest page.

UW’s announcement said it planned to recruit and train about 60–70 teams per year and direct many toward national I-Corps and follow-on funding. That is a stated plan, not a reported outcome. The network’s practical impact will depend on participation and what teams do with evidence gathered from potential users and customers.
