In the U.S., a Samsung phone’s standard limited warranty usually covers defects in materials and workmanship for 12 months—not damage from drops, cracked screens, or many other accidents. Samsung Care+ is separate protection that may cover accidental damage, certain breakdowns, and, on its Theft and Loss plan, lost or stolen phones. Which route applies depends on the phone, its coverage dates and condition, and the terms of any protection plan.

Start by identifying the cause of the problem: a suspected manufacturing defect may qualify for warranty service; an accident may call for Care+ or a paid repair. This guide covers Samsung phones sold in the United States. Terms and service options can differ by country and model.

What Samsung’s standard phone warranty covers

Samsung’s U.S. limited warranty generally covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. A phone that will not power on, or a display, camera, speaker, microphone, button, charging function, or connection that fails without evidence of damage, could qualify. A battery problem or software issue might qualify if Samsung determines it stems from a covered product defect.

A symptom alone does not establish coverage. Samsung may inspect the device and decide that impact, liquid, an unauthorized repair, or another excluded cause produced or contributed to the failure. The written warranty terms and the assessment of the individual phone control.

How long does the warranty last?

For Samsung mobile devices in the U.S., 12 months is the usual standard warranty period. Under Samsung’s terms, coverage starts on the earlier of delivery to the original consumer purchaser or the phone’s initial setup and activation. It therefore may not start on the day you first notice a problem—or even on the day you received a phone that had already been activated.

Check the model-specific status and terms using Samsung’s U.S. warranty page. A repaired or replaced phone is covered for the balance of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer; the repair does not generally restart a full one-year term. Samsung’s terms also give repair parts, including batteries sold for self-repair, a 90-day period.

Keep these separate: a retailer’s return or exchange window is not the manufacturer warranty; carrier device insurance is not Samsung Care+; and state law may provide rights beyond Samsung’s written limited warranty.

What the standard warranty generally excludes

The standard warranty is not general phone insurance. Samsung’s exclusions include damage or defects caused by accidents, misuse, neglect, abnormal stress, improper storage, unauthorized modification or repair, and non-Samsung-approved batteries or chargers. It also excludes ordinary cosmetic damage and wear that do not affect function, as well as certain exposure to liquid, moisture, weather, sand, dust, or dirt that is inconsistent with the device’s specifications and instructions.

  • All-Scenario Versatility: The minimalist, low-profile matte design blends effortlessly into any environment, from business commutes to weekend hikes. It pairs rugged durability with everyday pocketability for heavy-duty protection without the bulk.
  • Cracked screen: A crack caused by a drop, impact, pressure, or bending is generally not covered. A display failure without apparent impact may be assessed as a possible defect, but Samsung’s inspection matters.
  • Water or liquid damage: A water-resistance rating is not a promise that a phone is waterproof or that liquid damage is covered. Follow the exact model’s specifications and manual; Samsung’s warranty still has liquid- and moisture-related exclusions.
  • Cosmetic wear: Scratches or dents that do not affect functionality are generally excluded. Physical damage may also affect a claim if Samsung believes it caused or contributed to the failure.
  • Third-party repair or software changes: Unauthorized work, modifications, or software may create a coverage dispute, particularly if they caused the reported damage. Rooting or changing software does not, by itself, establish that every unrelated defect is excluded; the circumstances and warranty terms matter.

Battery problems: defect, aging, or safety concern?

A battery that fails because of a covered manufacturing defect may be eligible during the standard warranty period. Gradual capacity loss from ordinary use is not automatically a warranty defect. Under Samsung Care+, battery service is subject to plan terms and diagnostics; Samsung currently describes a threshold of 79% or less battery capacity.

A swollen, punctured, or otherwise damaged battery is a safety concern. Do not try to remove or repair it yourself. Contact Samsung or an authorized service location for safe handling and repair or disposal guidance.

Warranty or Samsung Care+?

Samsung Care+ is a separate protection product, not simply an extension of the standard warranty. Depending on the plan, it can cover accidental damage, mechanical breakdown after the manufacturer warranty ends, and—on the Theft and Loss version—lost or stolen devices. The exact triggers, exclusions, fees, and claim limits depend on the plan and device.

Problem Standard warranty Possible next step
Failure during normal use, with no apparent damage Potentially covered if Samsung finds a defect and the warranty is active Check warranty status and request Samsung service
Screen cracked in a drop Generally excluded Check Care+ benefits or request a paid repair estimate
Liquid damage Generally excluded or assessed under the specific facts and terms Check whether the plan covers the incident, or compare paid repair options
Battery capacity declines over time Not automatically covered Check diagnostics and any Care+ battery terms
Swollen or physically damaged battery Do not treat as a DIY repair Stop handling it as a routine repair and contact authorized service
Lost or stolen phone Not covered Only a qualifying Theft and Loss plan may help; secure the carrier account too
Cosmetic scratches without impaired function Generally excluded Usually a paid repair only if you choose to address them
Phone bought outside the U.S. Service may be restricted by country of first sale Contact an authorized center before shipping or traveling for service

For a suspected defect, start with the standard warranty if it is still active. For a customer-caused accident, check the exact Care+ plan or compare a paid repair with the phone’s remaining value. Carrier protection, retailer plans, credit-card benefits, and homeowners or renters insurance are separate alternatives; compare their premiums, deductibles, limits, exclusions, and repair or replacement rules rather than assuming they match Care+.

How to check your warranty status

  1. Go to Samsung’s U.S. warranty page.
  2. Sign in to your Samsung account if prompted, then register the phone or select it from your registered products.
  3. Open the product details and review the coverage information. Follow the available service instructions or choose the request-service option if shown.

To identify the phone, look under Settings → About phone, or check the original box or purchase documents. Samsung account registration and Samsung Members may also help locate device information. Do not post an IMEI or serial number publicly.

How to prepare and file a claim

Before sending or handing over the phone, gather the original receipt or order confirmation. Samsung’s terms call for proof of purchase showing the original purchase date, device serial number, and seller’s name and address. Also have the model and IMEI available, a concise account of when the problem began, and details of any prior repair or replacement.

  1. Confirm the coverage date and whether the phone was sold in the U.S.
  2. Document the condition. Photograph the phone, including any existing damage, before service.
  3. Back up your data. Samsung warns that service can delete or reformat some or all phone contents. Do not assume photos, messages, authenticator data, eSIM details, or app data will be recovered.
  4. Use Samsung’s authorized service workflow. Check Samsung U.S. service for available options, which may include authorized walk-in, mobile, or mail-in service depending on location and device.
  5. Describe the problem accurately. Explain when it began and any relevant impact, liquid exposure, modification, or repair. Ask whether Samsung is processing it as a standard warranty claim, Care+ claim, or paid repair, and keep the service or claim number.
  6. Clarify access requirements. Back up the phone, sign out of sensitive accounts where practical, and ask the service provider what access is actually needed. Do not share unnecessary account credentials. Restore screen locks and other theft-protection settings after service.

Samsung may repair the phone or replace it at its option. Its terms permit new, rebuilt, or reconditioned parts and products, so a replacement is not necessarily a brand-new, retail-sealed phone. Inspect the device when it comes back and retain the service paperwork.

If Samsung denies the claim

An active coverage date does not mean every problem is covered. If a claim is rejected, use a fact-based sequence:

  1. Ask for the specific reason for denial and the diagnostic findings, preferably in writing.
  2. Verify the coverage start date, model, IMEI or serial number, and that the proof of purchase matches the device.
  3. If Samsung cites impact, liquid, or another condition, ask what finding connects it to the reported failure. Keep your photographs and service records.
  4. Provide any missing purchase documentation and correct any device-record mismatch. If appropriate, request another authorized-service assessment.
  5. Get a paid-repair estimate before authorizing work, and compare it with the phone’s value and replacement cost.
  6. Check whether the retailer’s return or exchange window, carrier protection, credit-card benefit, or applicable state or federal consumer protections offer another route.

Do not conceal damage or describe an accident as a defect. A second assessment or appeal can clarify the decision, but it does not guarantee that Samsung will accept the claim.

Samsung Care+: fees, limits, and enrollment

Samsung’s U.S. Care+ information checked August 16, 2026: the company advertises a $29 fee for eligible cracked-screen and back-glass repairs on standard Care+, and $0 for eligible same-day repairs of those types under Care+ with Theft and Loss. Those are plan-specific service fees, not universal screen-repair prices. Availability depends on device, damage, location, and eligibility.

Samsung advertises up to three lost, stolen, or unrecoverable-device claims in a consecutive 12-month period under Theft and Loss, with deductibles of $99–$199 depending on the device. The company also lists monthly and upfront payment options, with plan lengths and fees varying by device and jurisdiction. Check the current Care+ page and FAQ for the specific phone’s benefits, service fees, deductibles, exclusions, and claim limits before relying on a figure.

Samsung’s pages do not state enrollment timing consistently: the FAQ says enrollment must be at device purchase, while the main Care+ page says a plan may be purchased within one year of buying a new device, with pricing or eligibility changing after the first 60 days. Do not assume either deadline applies to every product or purchase. Verify the live eligibility result and the actual plan terms for your device and purchase channel. Care+ is most relevant if you want protection for accidental damage or theft/loss, or face a high repair risk; compare the plan’s total cost and service fees with likely repair costs and the phone’s remaining value.

Phones bought abroad or imported

Samsung says smartphone service may be limited to the country where the product was first sold. For foreign products, service may take longer while parts are sourced, be available only in the original-sales country, or involve costs. Returns and refunds are generally handled in the original-sales country. Samsung identifies limited international warranty support for some newer Galaxy models, but parts availability can still cause delays or added expense.

If the phone is a gray-market import, an overseas-marketplace purchase, or an international variant bought while traveling, contact a local authorized center before shipping it. “Global warranty” should not be taken to mean free repair everywhere. The warranty page provides Samsung’s current warranty and international-service guidance.

Who to contact when the phone was bought from a retailer or carrier

Samsung handles the manufacturer warranty and Samsung-authorized repair. The retailer’s return or exchange policy is separate, so check it first for a newly purchased phone. The carrier may handle financing, billing, exchange logistics, or its own device-protection coverage; that insurance is not the Samsung warranty. A credit card may offer an extended-warranty benefit, subject to that card’s terms. Keep the purchase record and check the relevant provider’s rules before choosing a claim route.
