As of August 18, 2026, U.S. iCloud storage ranges from free 5GB to 12TB for $59.99 per month. The right choice depends on how much space your photos, backups, messages, and files actually use—and whether you want iCloud+ features or already pay for Apple services through Apple One. An iCloud plan adds cloud capacity, not physical storage to your iPhone.
iCloud storage and iCloud+: what you’re paying for
iCloud combines several related services: it syncs information among Apple devices, stores files and photos in the cloud, and holds device backups that can help restore an iPhone or iPad. The free plan includes 5GB; paying for iCloud+ increases the shared storage allowance and unlocks premium features.
These functions are not interchangeable. Syncing keeps supported information current across devices. Cloud storage holds items such as iCloud Drive files and Photos content. Device backup is a restorable copy of supported device data. None increases the device’s built-in capacity. With iCloud Photos and optimized storage enabled, originals can be kept in iCloud while smaller versions remain on a device, which may free local space.

Important: iCloud Photos is a synchronization service, not an independent archive. If you delete a photo from a device using iCloud Photos, the deletion generally syncs to iCloud and your other devices. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable photos and videos.

iCloud+ prices in the United States
Apple’s U.S. monthly prices below were current on August 18, 2026. Prices and feature availability vary by country or region, and applicable taxes may differ.

What each iCloud+ plan includes
All paid tiers include the underlying iCloud services and premium features such as iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites event creation, and HomeKit Secure Video support. Some features are unavailable or limited in certain countries and regions; consult Apple’s feature comparison for current availability.
- iCloud Private Relay: A Safari privacy service that routes browsing through two separate internet relays, designed so no single party can see both who you are and where you are browsing. It is not a full-device VPN and does not protect all app traffic. It may affect IP-based location services, and websites may sometimes request additional verification or behave differently. Availability varies by region. See Apple’s privacy feature explanation.
- Hide My Email: Creates random email addresses that forward messages to your personal inbox. Use aliases for shopping, newsletters, trials, or services where you would rather not share your primary address. You can manage or deactivate aliases in Apple settings; an active alias continues forwarding. Apple announced a move to unify new Sign in with Apple and iCloud+ Hide My Email relay addresses under
private.icloud.comlater in summer 2026. Treat that as an announced transition unless your account interface confirms it is complete; existing addresses on older domains were expected to keep working. Details: Apple Developer announcement and Apple’s Hide My Email guide. - Custom Email Domain: Lets you use an email address at a domain you own with iCloud Mail. You must control the domain and configure its DNS records. Family use is supported under Apple’s arrangements. If storage is full, you may be unable to receive new messages at custom addresses. - Apple Invites: iCloud+ subscribers can create invitations and manage RSVPs. Guests can view and respond on the web or in the app without an iCloud+ subscription or Apple Account. Invitations can include shared albums, collaborative Apple Music playlists, and Maps or Weather information; optional Apple Intelligence assistance depends on compatible devices and availability. - Family Sharing: Share plan capacity and iCloud+ features with up to five other people in a Family Sharing group. Each person uses their own Apple Account; private photos, files, and other personal content are not merged into one account. See Apple’s Family Sharing instructions.
Which plan should you choose?
Start with the iCloud storage breakdown on your account, not the storage capacity printed on your phone. A 256GB iPhone does not automatically need a 256GB iCloud plan. Photos and videos, backups for several devices, and message attachments often determine the actual requirement.

- Stay on 5GB if your iCloud use is genuinely small and your device backups fit. It can be restrictive once Photos, attachments, and backups accumulate.
- Choose 50GB if you use one iPhone, need a larger backup allowance, keep a modest Photos library, or want iCloud+ features without sharing a larger pool.
- Choose 200GB if your photo library is growing, you back up several Apple devices, or you want a small family to share storage. It also supports up to five HomeKit Secure Video cameras.
- Choose 2TB for a family, a substantial photo and video library, multiple regular backups, or more than five supported HomeKit Secure Video cameras.
- Choose 6TB or 12TB only when measured household or media use warrants it. These tiers are useful for several heavy users, but are excessive for many ordinary users.
One practical example: if two adults and a child share storage, first add up everyone’s current Photos, backups, and files. A 200GB plan may be enough for a modest group; a large video-heavy library can make 2TB more sensible. Remember the allowance is pooled: one person can consume most of it.

Camera support does not mean the plan alone provides recording. You also need compatible HomeKit-enabled cameras and a supported home hub, such as a HomePod, Apple TV, or suitable iPad. Confirm current device requirements in Apple’s iCloud terms and the camera documentation.
iCloud+ or Apple One?
Apple One can be a better overall deal if you already want several of its included entertainment or fitness services. Apple’s U.S. offers listed as of August 18, 2026 include:

Compare the bundle with only the services you would otherwise pay for. If you need cloud storage but do not use Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, or Apple News+, Apple One is not automatically cheaper. Check Apple One’s regional offer before deciding.

You can also buy additional iCloud storage alongside Apple One. If your standalone iCloud+ plan is larger than the storage included with Apple One, Apple says both plans can remain active. If Apple One provides more storage than the existing plan, Apple may cancel the standalone plan with a prorated refund. Review Apple’s explanation of Apple One and iCloud storage to avoid paying for overlapping capacity unintentionally.
What’s new in iCloud+
Apple introduced 6TB and 12TB plans in September 2023, extending the range for households and users with unusually large libraries. Apple Invites, launched in February 2025, added a social event-creation benefit to iCloud+. Apple’s 2026 services update also highlighted the service’s expansion; see the large-tier announcement and Apple’s services update.
Apple announced a Hide My Email relay-domain transition in June 2026, with new relay addresses planned to use private.icloud.com later in summer. Because rollout status can change, check the address shown in your Apple Account rather than assuming the transition has reached every user.

How to check usage, upgrade, or change plans
Check what is using space
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name or Apple Account.
- Tap iCloud and review the storage bar and category breakdown.
- Open categories such as Photos, Backups, Messages, or Drive to identify the largest uses.
- Delete only files or old device backups you no longer need. Before removing a backup, make sure you do not still need it to restore that device.
Storage use may come from several places at once: a second device backup, long message threads with attachments, app data, or files you forgot were in iCloud Drive. In a family plan, check whether the issue is one person’s usage or a category shared across the household.
Upgrade on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name or Apple Account at the top, then iCloud.
- Tap Manage Storage or Manage Account Storage.
- Choose Change Storage Plan or Upgrade to iCloud+, select a tier, and confirm.
Upgrade on Mac
- Open System Settings and select your Apple Account.
- Select iCloud, then choose Manage or Manage Storage.
- Select Change Storage Plan and confirm the subscription.
Labels can vary slightly with operating-system versions. Apple also supports purchasing iCloud+ from a PC; use iCloud for Windows or Apple’s account-management flow, since the precise Windows interface can change. Apple’s iPhone subscription guide describes the plan controls. Plans are billed monthly.
What happens when iCloud storage is full?
When account usage reaches or exceeds its available capacity, iCloud services can stop accepting new data. iCloud Photos may stop uploading new photos and videos; iCloud Drive may stop uploading or syncing files; device backups may fail; and some iCloud Mail functions can be affected. For a Family Sharing pool, these problems can occur when the family’s combined use exceeds the shared capacity.
That does not mean all existing content is immediately erased. The immediate risk is that syncing, uploads, and backups stop or fall behind. To recover:

- Review the storage breakdown and identify the largest categories.
- Remove files and backups you are certain you no longer need; empty Recently Deleted areas where applicable if you need to reclaim space immediately.
- Check each family member’s usage when sharing a plan.
- Upgrade if the household’s ongoing use is legitimate and cleanup will not create enough room.
Do not assume a new backup exists until you confirm a recent backup completed successfully.
Before downgrading or canceling iCloud+
First download or remove enough data to fit within the lower allowance, including the free 5GB tier if that is your destination. Apple warns that if your stored content remains over the new limit, some information will stop syncing or updating and new device backups will not complete until you free space or increase the plan again. Downgrading to free also removes access to iCloud+ features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email, Apple Invites event creation, and HomeKit Secure Video support.
- Check Photos, Drive, Messages, Mail, and every device backup before changing tiers.
- Save independent copies of important originals and files before deleting them from iCloud.
- If you share storage, confirm the effect on other family members and decide who will cover the replacement plan.
- After changing the plan, verify the new allowance and confirm that backups and syncing resume.

For people who primarily use Apple devices, iCloud+ is often worthwhile when the free 5GB no longer covers backups, Photos, or shared household use. It can also be attractive for a specific feature such as Hide My Email or HomeKit Secure Video, even if storage is not the main reason. Choose the smallest tier that comfortably fits measured use, then reassess if your household’s library grows.
It is less compelling as a generic online hard drive for mixed-device households that need broad file-sharing and collaboration across platforms. Google One may suit Android and Google Photos users; OneDrive may fit Windows and Microsoft 365 households; Dropbox emphasizes cross-platform file sharing; and Proton Drive is a privacy-focused alternative. Their prices and features change, so compare current offers directly at Google One, OneDrive, Dropbox, and Proton Drive. Whichever service you choose, cloud syncing should not be your only copy of irreplaceable data.
