Udemy’s reported post-Black Friday promotion was real, but it was a November 2024 deal—not a current sale. An Engadget shopping report published on November 25, 2024, said selected courses were discounted by up to 79%, with some priced as low as $13. The promotion has not been verified as active in 2026, so treat its prices as historical examples rather than offers available today.
The report also disclosed that the publisher received compensation. That makes it useful as a dated deal roundup, but not as independent testing of every course or proof that the entire Udemy catalog received the maximum discount.

What the 2024 Udemy promotion included
The headline claim—“up to 79% off”—applied to selected courses, not necessarily Udemy’s entire marketplace. The discount was calculated against listed or reference prices, and both prices and availability could change.
Udemy’s earlier Black Friday pricing had reportedly reached 85%, so the post-Black Friday promotion was slightly less aggressive than the best discount mentioned in the report.

Those course lengths, ratings, enrollment figures and prices were snapshots from the 2024 article. They may have changed since then. The promotion also covered or mentioned subjects including Python, web development, data science, cybersecurity, business intelligence, design, photography, leadership and communication. That does not mean every course in those categories received the maximum discount.

Individual Udemy course or Personal Plan?
The most important buying decision is not the percentage discount. It is whether you want permanent access to one course or temporary access to a subscription catalog.

Udemy’s broader marketplace contains more than 250,000 courses, while the Personal Plan covers a substantially smaller curated selection. Not every course is included, so check the course page before subscribing.
When buying one course makes more sense
- You already know which instructor or course you want.
- The course is deeply discounted and you expect to revisit it over many months or years.
- Your target course is not included in Personal Plan.
- You want to avoid recurring charges.
When Personal Plan may be better
- You plan to study several included subjects during one subscription period.
- You want to switch among courses rather than commit to one.
- The subscription costs less than buying the courses you realistically expect to complete.
Personal Plan access is not permanent. Udemy’s FAQ says cancellation ends access after the current billing period, and subscription progress or certificates may not remain available after access ends. Subscription refund rules also differ from the rules for eligible individual-course purchases.
What “lifetime access” actually means
For an eligible individual marketplace purchase, Udemy generally provides lifetime access to the course and its materials. The price—including a sale price or coupon price—does not shorten the access period.

However, lifetime access is not ownership of the videos or other course materials. Udemy’s lifetime-access policy ties access to your account remaining in good standing and Udemy retaining a license to the course. If an instructor unpublishes a course, enrolled learners generally retain access, but material can be removed for legal or policy reasons. No platform promise should be treated as an unconditional guarantee that a course will remain available forever.

How to evaluate a Udemy deal before paying
- Check the final checkout price. A large percentage-off label matters less than the actual amount charged. Taxes may apply depending on your location and billing details.
- Check the course’s last update. This is especially important for generative AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing and software courses, where tools and interfaces change quickly.
- Read recent reviews. An overall rating or large enrollment count may reflect years of history. Look for current comments about outdated exercises, broken links and instructor support.
- Review the curriculum. Confirm that the sections, projects, exercises and prerequisites match your goal. A long course is not automatically a good course.
- Check the instructor. Look for relevant experience, recent activity and evidence that the course is maintained.
- Confirm Personal Plan eligibility. If you are considering a subscription, verify that the exact course is included rather than assuming the whole marketplace is available.
- Compare web and app pricing. Udemy says mobile-app prices can differ from prices on Udemy.com, and coupon codes cannot be entered in the app in the same way. Compare the final price on the platform you intend to use.
- Read the refund terms. Udemy’s refund policy describes a 30-day refund policy for eligible individual-course purchases, subject to exclusions and payment method. Do not assume the same guarantee applies to a subscription.
Regional pricing and changing promotions
Udemy uses country-specific price tiers and may change pricing based on market conditions. The amount shown to one learner may not match the amount shown in another country, account or platform. Promotional prices can also expire, and the reference price can change.

Udemy’s current Personal Plan page has displayed individual-course purchases in a $19.99–$199.99 range, but that is a current displayed range—not evidence that the November 2024 Black Friday prices remain available. Check Udemy’s marketplace directly before buying.
Should you wait for another Udemy sale?
If you have a specific course in mind, compare its current final price with its curriculum and update history rather than buying solely because a banner says “79% off.” If the course is inexpensive and meets your needs, a one-time purchase may be worthwhile. If you want to take multiple included courses in a short period, Personal Plan may offer better value.
But the $19 AI course, $13 IT course and 79% maximum discount should be treated as historical benchmarks from November 25, 2024. They are not promises about what Udemy charges in September 2026 or what the next promotion will offer.
