Important context: This is a retrospective on a TechCrunch Mobility roundup published September 26, 2024—not a report of new August 2026 developments. The underlying stories were Uber’s planned WeRide robotaxi partnership in Abu Dhabi, a cluster of transportation and climate-tech financings, and Rivian’s disclosure of its first foundation grants.
Together, the developments showed three different forms of capital allocation: Uber was supplying platform access and customer demand, investors were funding transportation technologies, and Rivian was directing corporate-linked philanthropic capital toward environmental and community organizations.
Uber and WeRide: a platform partnership, not a mature robotaxi network
On September 25, 2024, Uber and autonomous-vehicle company WeRide announced plans to make WeRide robotaxis available through the Uber platform in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The companies expected the service to begin later in 2024.

That wording matters. The announcement described a planned marketplace integration, not proof that Uber had launched a global robotaxi operation or that Uber would own and operate WeRide’s vehicles. WeRide had obtained a UAE license to test its vehicles in July 2024, according to TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report. Testing authorization and passenger-service authorization are not necessarily the same thing, and a partnership announcement does not establish that a commercial service was operating at scale.

Abu Dhabi was significant because Middle Eastern markets were becoming attractive launch locations for Chinese autonomous-vehicle companies. Favorable regulation, available capital, and the opportunity to deploy in a defined geography can make the region a useful proving ground for companies that still face more complicated regulatory environments elsewhere.
Uber’s asset-light autonomous-vehicle strategy
The WeRide agreement fit a broader strategy: Uber was positioning itself as the demand, dispatch, payments, and consumer-interface layer for autonomous fleets developed by specialist companies.
At the time, Uber’s announced AV relationships included:
- Waymo vehicles on the Uber app in Phoenix, beginning in October 2023.
- A planned Waymo expansion into Austin and Atlanta in early 2025.
- A planned partnership with Cruise.
- Work with U.K.-based autonomous-driving company Wayve.
These were announced plans and partnerships as of September 2024, not guarantees that every deployment would occur on schedule. The model offers a clear trade-off: Uber can access autonomous fleets without developing every vehicle and operating system itself, while AV companies gain distribution and potential ride demand. The difficult questions include economics, safety responsibility, customer support, data ownership, insurance, service quality, and who absorbs the cost when an autonomous vehicle is unavailable or a trip fails.
For investors and industry observers, the important distinction is between app availability, vehicle operation, and network scale. A vehicle appearing as an option inside Uber’s app does not by itself mean Uber owns the fleet, operates the technology, or has demonstrated a repeatable multi-city business.
The transportation funding ledger
The same September roundup listed financings across fuels, aircraft, electric propulsion, charging, maritime transport, trucking, and mobility software. They should not be treated as one homogeneous “aviation boom.” Several companies were aviation-related, while others were adjacent transportation or climate technologies.

The strongest conclusion is narrower than “aviation startups were booming.” Investors were backing technologies aimed at difficult transportation and industrial problems, including aviation emissions, hydrogen storage, autonomous flight, electric propulsion, charging access, maritime freight, and commercial vehicles.
The financings also illustrate why readers should distinguish among funding types:
- Venture equity: capital invested in a company, such as AIR COMPANY’s Series B or Pyka’s Series B.
- Project equity: capital directed toward a specific commercial project or facility, as in Twelve’s financing.
- Credit facilities: debt or debt-like financing that must be repaid under its terms.
- Strategic investment: participation by an industry company or affiliated investor that may provide commercial knowledge, distribution, validation, or future customers—but is not proof of mass production or profitability.
Twelve’s announced $645 million total is the clearest example. It consisted of a $200 million Series C, $400 million in project equity, and $45 million in credit facilities. Calling all $645 million “venture capital” would misrepresent both the risk and the intended use of the money.
Strategic participation was also notable. AIR COMPANY’s round included airlines, aviation suppliers, and mobility-focused investors. Its Avfuel relationship was described as covering distribution, logistics, and environmental-attribute tracking, while the new capital was intended to expand engineering and research and development. Those relationships can improve a startup’s route to market, but they do not eliminate certification, production, feedstock, infrastructure, or customer-adoption risks.
Similarly, a large raise demonstrates investor interest and provides financial runway. It does not prove that a sustainable aviation fuel has reached commercial-scale profitability, that an autonomous aircraft has completed all required certification, or that an electric vehicle platform can be manufactured economically.

Rivian Foundation: where the first grants went
On September 24, 2024, Rivian disclosed approximately $10 million in initial grants from the Rivian Foundation to 41 organizations. The grants covered conservation, land preservation, agriculture, Indigenous communities, urban communities, renewable energy, and climate resilience.
The largest disclosed grant was $2 million to The Nature Conservancy for collaborative work intended to protect California landscapes, wildlife, cultural resources, and public access. The Ocean Resilience Climate Alliance received $1 million. Most of the other 39 grants were reported as ranging from $100,000 to $400,000.
The grant disclosure was newsworthy not only because of the amount, but because it provided the first public view of how Rivian’s long-promised philanthropic structure was actually allocating money. The foundation’s focus broadly reflected Rivian’s environmental identity, while also extending to community and Indigenous priorities.

Rivian announced in October 2021 that it intended to create “Forever by Rivian” and contribute more than 8 million shares—approximately 1% of its equity—along with $20 million in cash.
The structure later changed. “Forever by Rivian” was established as a 501(c)(4) social-welfare organization, but Rivian subsequently determined that a 501(c)(3) foundation would provide a more transparent and effective grantmaking structure. Nearly $25 million was transferred into the Rivian Foundation in 2023, while the 501(c)(4) entity was being wound down and its equity was intended to transfer to the foundation.
The value of a stock-based philanthropic commitment can change substantially before it is transferred, sold, or granted. TechCrunch reported that the hypothetical value of Rivian’s original equity commitment had fallen from approximately $643 million around the company’s IPO to approximately $98 million by September 2024. That is a change in market value, not evidence that Rivian had already distributed all of the promised shares or that the original commitment had been converted into grants.

The distribution-timing question
TechCrunch reported that the foundation distributed $123,250 in 2023, below the usual 5% annual distribution requirement for private foundations. Foundations can generally address a shortfall in a later year, and Rivian said its 2023 and 2024 activity had surpassed the applicable minimum requirements when considered together.
This distinction matters. A public corporate pledge, a transfer of assets to a legal entity, a tax filing, a stock valuation, and an actual grant are separate events. The reported timing warranted scrutiny, but it does not by itself establish wrongdoing. Nor should the first $10 million in disclosed grants be described as money distributed in 2023.
What these three stories had in common
The Uber deal, the funding announcements, and the Rivian grants were not one transaction or one market trend. They represented different channels through which money and resources were being directed toward the future of transportation:
- Uber allocated platform access and demand. Its strategy was to connect customers with autonomous fleets developed by specialist partners.
- Investors allocated risk capital. The funding cluster targeted technologies that may reduce emissions, automate transport, or improve the economics of electric mobility.
- Rivian allocated philanthropic capital. Its foundation supported conservation, resilience, renewable energy, and community organizations.
The common thread was capital seeking exposure to transportation’s next phase—but with very different time horizons, return expectations, and measures of success. A venture investor may be seeking commercial growth. A strategic investor may be seeking technology or supply-chain access. A foundation is pursuing social and environmental outcomes rather than financial returns.
What readers should not conclude
- A partnership is not a mature robotaxi business. Uber’s WeRide announcement concerned a planned Abu Dhabi integration, not proof of a scaled global network.
- A funding round is not commercial validation. Capital can fund engineering, certification, manufacturing, infrastructure, or projects that still face substantial execution risk.
- Twelve did not raise $645 million in one venture round. Its total combined a Series C, project equity, and credit facilities.
- Rivian did not simply “give away 1% of its equity.” The company announced a commitment involving approximately 1% of its equity, and the legal structure, transfer process, market value, and grant timing evolved afterward.
- The funding cluster was not a sector-wide performance index. It showed investor and strategic interest across selected technologies, not universal commercial success in aviation or mobility.
