Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi resigned from Aurora Innovation’s board effective December 31, 2024, Aurora disclosed in a filing on January 3, 2025. The move was a resignation from Aurora’s board—not from Uber—and Aurora said it was not caused by a disagreement over the company’s operations, policies, or practices.
What happened
Khosrowshahi notified Aurora on December 31, 2024, that he was stepping down as a director, and the resignation took effect that day. Aurora reported the change in a Form 8-K filed with the SEC under Item 5.02, which covers changes involving directors and certain officers.
According to the filing, Khosrowshahi’s stated reason was to reduce his outside board commitments and focus on his continuing responsibilities as Uber’s chief executive. Aurora also explicitly stated that his departure was not the result of a disagreement with the company concerning its operations, policies, or practices.
This was not an Uber resignation. Khosrowshahi remained Uber’s CEO, and Uber’s 2026 proxy materials list his service on Aurora’s board as spanning 2021 through 2024.

Shailen Bhatt joined Aurora’s board
Aurora appointed Shailen Bhatt to its board on December 31, 2024. His term was scheduled to run until Aurora’s 2026 annual meeting of stockholders.
At the time of his appointment, Bhatt was senior vice president and chief operating officer for AtkinsRéalis in the United States and Latin America. He previously served as administrator of the Federal Highway Administration from January 2023 through September 2024, as a senior vice president at AECOM, and as president and CEO of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. He also held leadership positions at transportation agencies in Colorado, Delaware, and Kentucky.

Khosrowshahi’s board seat stemmed from a 2020 transaction between the companies. Aurora acquired Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, the ride-hailing company’s self-driving unit, and Uber invested $400 million in Aurora. Khosrowshahi joined Aurora’s board as part of that strategic relationship.

Aurora’s autonomous-driving platform was designed for more than trucks: its stated ambitions included passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks. Trucking became a major commercialization focus, which is why the company is sometimes described as a self-driving truck startup.

Did the resignation end the Uber-Aurora relationship?
Not based on the cited filings. A board resignation removes a direct governance connection, but it does not automatically cancel an investment, data-sharing arrangement, or commercial contract.

Those disclosures establish the relationship as Aurora described it at the time. They do not, by themselves, establish the precise status of Uber’s ownership stake or partnership terms as of 2026. The January 2025 board-resignation filing did not announce that Uber was selling its Aurora investment, ending its commercial relationship, or changing its autonomous-vehicle strategy.
What Aurora’s business looked like at the time
Aurora described its 2024 commercial trucking work as pilots in which autonomous systems hauled loads under the supervision of vehicle operators. The reported pilot customers and partners included FedEx, Hirschbach, Schneider, Uber Freight, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, and Werner.
That distinction matters: the filing supports describing Aurora as developing and piloting autonomous-driving technology, with trucking as a key commercial path. It does not support portraying the company as already running a fully driverless, mass-market trucking network.

What the resignation means
The clearest interpretation is limited. Khosrowshahi’s departure simplified his outside board commitments and allowed him to focus on running Uber. It also ended his personal governance role at Aurora.
However, Aurora’s filing provides no evidence that the decision reflected a dispute, dissatisfaction with Aurora’s performance, misconduct, or a breakdown in the companies’ strategic relationship. It likewise did not state that Uber would appoint another representative to Aurora’s board.
