Twitter announced an $84 upfront annual Twitter Blue plan on January 18, 2023. It was a web offer equivalent to $7 per month—$12, or 12.5%, less than paying the $8 web price for 12 months. The figure is historical, not a confirmed current X Premium price.
How the $84 annual price compared
The annual plan required subscribers to pay $84 at signup. The $7 figure is its monthly equivalent, not a monthly billing option. Twitter’s December 2022 announcement listed the monthly web price as $8; Reuters reported a monthly price of $11 through iOS and Android.

Against twelve web monthly payments, the annual plan saved $12: $96 − $84. That is a 12.5% discount from the $96 total. The annual web offer was reported as web-only, so the mobile figures are a channel comparison, not proof that a comparable $84 plan could be bought in the apps. The apparent $48 difference between $84 and twelve $11 payments is likewise a mathematical comparison, not an advertised mobile annual discount.

Where the offer was available
Contemporary reporting described the annual offer as available through Twitter’s website in markets where Blue was offered, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Availability could vary by account and region; not every user was guaranteed to see the same option. Reuters’ report, republished by Euronews, covered the price and reported markets, while TechCrunch reported the annual plan’s launch and web availability.
What Twitter Blue included
Twitter’s December 2022 product announcement listed features including Edit Tweet, 1080p video uploads and Reader Mode. It also advertised a blue checkmark for eligible subscribers after account review. Subscribers could access the service on supported platforms after subscribing on one platform, but that did not mean the annual purchase itself was offered in every app.

Contemporary coverage also described benefits such as longer video uploads, reply ranking, custom app icons, themes and a thread reader. Features and eligibility could change; the annual price did not guarantee that a particular feature would remain available for the entire year. The checkmark was not the old verification system
The paid Blue checkmark differed from Twitter’s earlier verification program, which identified accounts Twitter considered notable, authentic and active. Under the relaunched product, a subscription made an account eligible for a blue checkmark after review, subject to eligibility and anti-impersonation requirements. It is more accurate to say Blue included eligibility for a paid checkmark than to say the $84 purchase automatically bought legacy verification.

When did the annual plan make financial sense?
Ignoring taxes, refunds and price or feature changes, $84 equals 10.5 months at the $8 monthly web rate. If someone expected to keep the subscription for 11 or 12 months, the annual plan would cost less than paying monthly. At 10 months or fewer, monthly billing would cost less overall.
The trade-off was flexibility. Annual billing saved at most $12 against a full year of web monthly payments, but required the full $84 upfront. Paying monthly cost more over 12 months but made it easier to stop if the service became less useful or its features and policies changed. Check the applicable checkout screen and purchaser terms for renewal, cancellation, refund, tax and eligibility details; the available launch-era reporting does not establish every annual-plan billing condition.

Is $84 still the price?
No conclusion about today’s price follows from a 2023 announcement. The $84 offer was for Twitter Blue at that time; the platform is now known as X, and its subscription name, features and prices may have changed. Before subscribing, use X’s official Premium signup to check the current plan, billing period, total charge and terms. Compare the web and in-app checkout prices, and avoid third-party sellers promising verification.
