Yes—but as a historical price change. On July 28, 2022, Twitter announced that Twitter Blue would rise from US$2.99 to US$4.99 per month in the United States, a US$2 increase, or about 66.9%. New subscribers faced the higher price immediately; existing subscribers were told it would take effect for them in October 2022. This is not the current price of X Premium, the service’s later successor.
What changed in July 2022?
Twitter announced the increase on July 28, 2022. The U.S. monthly price moved from $2.99 to $4.99. The percentage increase was about 66.9%, calculated as the $2 difference divided by the previous $2.99 price. Contemporary reporting on the announcement said new subscribers paid the higher rate immediately, while existing subscribers were notified that it would apply from October 2022.

Those are reported July 2022 prices, not current rates. Prices varied by market then, and the product and its pricing changed again afterward.
Why did Twitter give for raising the price?
Twitter said the higher price would help it continue developing features subscribers requested, improve existing features, and support its mission of supporting journalism. It also said the original price had been kept low while the company tested the product, gathered feedback, and refined its vision. These were Twitter’s stated reasons; they do not establish that the service’s value to each subscriber increased in proportion to the price.

What did subscribers get for the 2022 price?
The pre-relaunch Twitter Blue was a bundle of reading, customization, and posting tools—not primarily a paid-verification plan. Its features included:
- Undo Tweet: a short preview window to review a post before it was published, rather than a way to retract a post after publication.
- Reader mode and Bookmark Folders: tools for making long threads easier to read and organizing saved posts.
- Customization: options such as custom app icons and navigation-bar settings.
- Reading benefits: ad-free articles from participating publishers and a view of Top Articles shared in a subscriber’s network.
- Twitter Blue Labs: early access to some experimental features, which could change over time.
- NFT profile-picture support: an additional feature available in that product era.
Twitter’s 2021 U.S. launch announcement described the original $2.99 price and the service’s reading, customization, and tweet-preview tools. Whether $4.99 was worthwhile depended on which features a subscriber actually used. A reader chiefly interested in a blue checkmark was looking for something that became central only in a later redesign.

Was the increase about blue checkmarks?
No. The July 2022 increase applied to the existing Twitter Blue subscription. The paid checkmark association came later, after Twitter’s acquisition and a redesign of the product. In December 2022, Twitter relaunched Blue at $8 per month on the web and $11 per month through iOS, adding a checkmark after account review and promoting features including Edit Tweet, 1080p video uploads, and Reader Mode. - June 2021: Twitter introduced Blue in Australia and Canada.
- November 2021: It launched in the United States and New Zealand at US$2.99 per month in the U.S.
- July 2022: Twitter announced the increase to US$4.99 per month in the U.S., with different regional prices.
- December 2022: Twitter relaunched Blue with a new feature set and web-versus-iOS pricing.
- Later: The subscription became X Premium, with Basic, Premium, and Premium+ tiers.
The sequence matters: the $4.99 plan was one generation of the service, not a price quote for the later paid-checkmark product or today’s X Premium.

What does the equivalent cost now?
X’s current help documentation describes Basic, Premium, and Premium+ tiers. It says web pricing starts at $3 per month or $32 per year in available countries, but the amount depends on country and tier and may be affected by taxes and payment method. Mobile prices can differ from web prices because of Apple or Google app-store fees. Check the X Premium page and the X Premium FAQ for current availability, features, and localized pricing before subscribing; the historic $4.99 figure is not a reliable guide.
The tiers also do not map neatly onto the old Blue bundle. X describes Basic as including features such as editing posts, longer posts and videos, reply prioritization, formatting, and bookmark folders. Premium adds benefits including a blue checkmark, reduced advertising, creator-program access, ID verification, Media Studio, and higher Grok usage limits; Premium+ adds further benefits, including no ads across X, higher usage limits, Radar Search, and Articles. Features and eligibility are subject to X’s current terms. The present blue checkmark is associated with an eligible active Premium or Premium+ subscription, rather than the former notability-based verification model.
For anyone comparing subscription costs, compare the same country, tier, billing period, and purchase channel. A monthly web starting price is not necessarily the amount shown in an app or the price of a higher tier. X says cancellation generally leaves features active through the billing period, subscriptions are generally non-refundable unless law requires otherwise, and users should cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid another charge. Apple or Google may handle refund requests for subscriptions purchased through their platforms; these are current X Premium policies, not terms to assume applied to Twitter Blue in 2022.
