Some prominent Twitch streamers reported ad-revenue declines of more than 50% in May 2025, but that is not proof of a platform-wide collapse. Knut and Mizkif described unusually weak earnings, while Twitch said its internal figures showed that advertising and Turbo revenue across the community had not declined. The underlying data was not publicly released, so the fairest conclusion is narrower: serious losses may have affected some creators, while Twitch as a whole remains under monetization and strategic pressure.
What happened to Twitch streamer ad revenue?
On May 20, 2025, reports based on comments from streamers Knut and Mizkif described Twitch ad revenue as being at an “all-time low,” with declines exceeding 50% in some cases. Those claims were significant because both creators are large enough for changes in their dashboards to attract attention across the streaming industry.
However, the reports did not establish that Twitch ad revenue fell by more than 50% for all creators. They did not provide an audited sample, a platform-wide dataset, comparable viewing hours, audience geography, impressions, fill rates, or effective CPMs. It is also unclear whether every figure referred to monthly ad revenue, ad revenue per viewer, revenue per thousand impressions, or a dashboard estimate that could later be adjusted.

That creates a genuine data dispute, not a settled finding. The streamer reports may accurately describe their own experience, while Twitch’s aggregate figures may accurately describe a different group of creators or a different measurement period.
The original reports and Twitch’s response as reported by Dexerto should therefore be read as competing accounts, not as independently verified proof of a universal collapse.
Why more ads can still mean less money
Ad frequency and ad yield are different things. Viewers may complain about seeing more advertisements while a streamer earns less from each hour of broadcasting.
A creator’s income depends on more than the number of ads inserted into a stream. Important variables include:

- CPM: how much advertisers pay per thousand impressions.
- Fill rate: how many available ad opportunities are actually sold.
- Audience geography: advertisers may value impressions differently across countries and regions.
- Ad format: different formats can produce different prices and completion rates.
- Viewer retention: viewers may leave before or during an ad break.
- Concurrent viewers and watch time: fewer viewer-hours usually mean fewer monetized opportunities.
- Ad blocking and non-monetized traffic: not every viewer produces a paid impression.
- Net revenue: the amount paid to a creator can differ from an advertiser’s gross spend.
Twitch’s Monetized Streamer Agreement says ad payments are based on the percentage shown in a creator’s dashboard and on net advertising revenue. Twitch also does not guarantee that ads will appear on every channel and retains control over the type and format of ads served.
As a result, “I saw more ads” does not answer “did the streamer earn more?” A channel could have a heavier ad load but lower CPMs, weaker fill, fewer completed impressions, or a less valuable audience mix.
How to tell whether a creator-specific decline reflects Twitch
The most useful test is to separate audience size from monetization yield. A creator should compare equivalent periods using the same definitions:
- Compare total ad income. This shows the overall change but not its cause.
- Compare hours streamed. A creator who streamed fewer hours may naturally earn less.
- Compare average concurrent viewers. Lower viewership can explain lower ad totals even if ad rates are unchanged.
- Calculate ad income per streaming hour. This helps identify whether each hour became less productive.
- Calculate income per viewer-hour. This is a better measure of advertising yield than monthly revenue alone.
- Check audience geography and category. Changes in location, content, or advertiser suitability can affect demand.
- Separate finalized data from provisional dashboard figures. Later corrections, refunds, invalid-traffic adjustments, or currency effects can change reported totals.
The interpretation depends on the result:
- If viewers and hours fell, lower ad income may primarily reflect lower watch time.
- If viewers stayed stable but income fell, lower CPMs, fill rates, geography, formats, or reporting changes become more plausible.
- If only one category or country was affected, the cause may be local advertiser demand or content suitability.
- If many comparable creators saw the same decline at the same time, that would be stronger evidence of a platform or advertising-market event.
Even then, creators would need comparable data before identifying a specific cause. Viewbotting enforcement, ad-setting changes, audience churn, and multistreaming can also alter monetized impressions, but there is no direct evidence that any one of those factors caused the May 2025 reports.

Twitch’s broader business pressures
The ad dispute sits within a larger set of challenges. On January 10, 2024, Twitch announced a reduction of roughly 500 employees, or about 35% of its workforce. CEO Dan Clancy said the company had been staffed for more optimistic growth expectations. The Verge reported the workforce reduction and Twitch’s stated rationale.
Live video is expensive to operate. Twitch must pay for infrastructure, moderation, safety systems, support, product development, and payment processing while balancing creator compensation with profitability. Showing more ads can increase inventory, but excessive interruptions can reduce watch time and damage the viewer experience that makes the inventory valuable.
Twitch has also faced competition from YouTube Live and Kick, along with the normalization of viewing after the pandemic-era peak. Industry reporting has described watch time as lower than its peak while still above pre-pandemic levels. That supports “under pressure” or “at a strategic crossroads,” not necessarily “collapsing.”

Ad revenue is only one part of a Twitch creator’s income
Creators can also earn from channel subscriptions, gift subscriptions, Prime Gaming subscriptions, Bits, direct tips, sponsorships, merchandise, affiliate links, paid memberships, and content distributed on other platforms.

Subscription revenue-sharing changes are often confused with advertising terms. Twitch’s Partner Plus update introduced:
- Level 1: a 60/40 net subscription revenue share at 100 Plus Points.
- Level 2: a 70/30 net subscription revenue share at 300 Plus Points.
- Tier 1 subscriptions count as one Plus Point, Tier 2 as two, and Tier 3 as six.
- Twitch removed the previous $100,000 annual cap on net subscription revenue at the 70/30 level.
These are subscription terms, not ad-revenue terms. A better subscription split may help an eligible creator, but it does not automatically offset a fall in advertising income. The details are in Twitch’s Partner Plus announcement.

That does not mean every creator receives cash immediately. Twitch said Affiliate or Partner status is still required for payouts. In the United States, Twitch said the minimum payout threshold is $50. Creators below the threshold may use Spendable Balance for certain Twitch purchases, subject to the program’s terms. The announcement is available on Twitch’s official blog.

Twitch is also promoting Creator Sponsorships, Gameplay Ads, Streamer-Led Promotions, subscription-linked Drops, improved discovery and clips, and lower currency-conversion costs for Eurozone streamers. Twitch reported that more than 36 million viewers claimed a Drop during the preceding year and that subscription-required Drops generated an additional $11 million for streamers. It also reported that gift-subscription promotions could produce up to 80% more gift subscriptions during promotional events.
Those figures are Twitch-reported results, not independent audits. They show the types of monetization Twitch is testing, but they do not establish that the programs will replace lost advertising income for most creators.
What creators can realistically do
Creators should treat advertising as one revenue stream rather than a guaranteed salary.

- Use comparable periods. Compare the same month year over year and account for hours streamed, average viewers, category, and geography.
- Test ad timing cautiously. More frequent breaks may increase inventory but can also cause viewers to leave.
- Build recurring support. Subscriptions, memberships, Bits, and direct supporter programs can reduce dependence on CPMs.
- Develop content outside live streams. YouTube videos, Shorts, podcasts, and searchable clips can create additional discovery and sponsorship opportunities.
- Consider sponsorships and commerce. Brand deals, affiliate links, merchandise, and digital products can be more valuable than programmatic ads for an engaged niche audience.
- Protect audience access. Maintain a presence outside Twitch so a policy, algorithm, or monetization change does not affect every income source at once.
Multistreaming can help a creator test YouTube Live, Kick, or another platform, but it also splits attention and may reduce Twitch-specific engagement. Before changing strategy, creators should review each platform’s current contracts, exclusivity rules, payout requirements, audience fit, and brand-safety reputation.
Verdict: serious reports, but not proof of a Twitch-wide collapse
The claim that Twitch ad revenue “plummeted” is credible as a description of severe losses reported by some prominent streamers. It is not established as a universal platform-wide fact. Twitch disputed the claim using internal aggregate figures, but it did not publicly provide enough methodology or raw data for outside observers to independently reconcile the two accounts.
The more defensible picture is that Twitch is under pressure from changing viewership, expensive live-video operations, creator-pay tensions, competition, and the risk that heavier advertising can harm retention. Its 2026 monetization initiatives show an effort to broaden creator income, but access to more tools is not the same as reliable earnings. For streamers, the practical lesson is to measure advertising yield carefully and build several income sources instead of relying on Twitch ads alone.
