Yes—but the original 2024 headline is now outdated. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy previewed a plan on April 11, 2024, under which Twitch and DJs would share money with music labels. Twitch later launched the Twitch DJ Program in August 2024.
Under the program, participating DJs can livestream tracks in Twitch’s approved DJ Catalog. Twitch says monetizing participants have a percentage of their channel revenue set aside for music-rights costs, while Twitch shares some of that cost. Twitch has not published one universal deduction rate for every DJ. Non-monetizing participating DJs are covered by Twitch under its published explanation.
What Twitch’s DJ revenue-sharing arrangement means
This is not a separate bill that every DJ pays directly to a record label, and it does not mean labels receive all of a DJ’s earnings. Instead, Twitch’s DJ Program Terms allow Twitch to deduct “Music Costs” during participation in Twitch monetization programs.

- the additional Music Costs deduction associated with the DJ Program; and
- any Twitch subsidy that reduces the effective cost.
Twitch says payments go through music companies and other rights holders representing musicians. The public announcement and legal terms do not disclose a single rate that applies to every channel, a per-track royalty, or a public breakdown by subscriptions, Bits, advertising, donations, or sponsorships.

In an interview reported by Engadget on April 11, 2024, Clancy said Twitch was developing a structure in which Twitch and DJ streamers would share money with labels. The goal was to replace an unsustainable temporary arrangement in which Twitch paid music companies itself and to reduce repeated copyright disputes.
At that stage, the terms, rate, allocation across revenue types, and operational rules had not been published.

Twitch formally announced the program on June 6, 2024. It said the catalog would be supported by agreements involving Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, independent labels, and rights holders represented by Merlin.
The program went live in August 2024 with a catalog containing tens of millions of tracks, which Twitch described as representing most popular music. Twitch also announced a one-year transition subsidy. The subsidy began at 100% for August 2024 and was designed to decline over the first year. It was a launch measure, not a permanent promise; readers should not assume it remains available in September 2026 without current confirmation from Twitch.
How much money do DJs lose?
There is no publicly disclosed universal percentage. Twitch describes Music Costs as a percentage of channel revenue that varies according to how the channel monetizes. It also said it would initially share most costs 50/50 with streamers while absorbing more during the transition period.

That statement should not be confused with Twitch taking 50% of a DJ’s revenue. “50/50” refers to Twitch’s stated cost-sharing model, not a universal deduction from subscriptions or total channel earnings.

A creator comparing earnings before and after enrollment should also account for Twitch’s normal deductions. A lower payout cannot automatically be attributed entirely to Music Costs.
Who is financially affected?

The terms say the deduction begins at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the day after the DJ opts in and ends at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the day after the DJ opts out, subject to the agreement’s conditions.
What music can DJs play?
Enrollment is not permission to play any song. A track must be listed in the current Twitch DJ Catalog when it is used, unless the DJ has separately obtained written permission from all relevant rights holders.
The catalog is track-specific and can change as rights change. An artist’s presence in the catalog does not necessarily clear the artist’s entire discography. Bootlegs, unofficial remixes, edits, mashups, unreleased recordings, and other versions may have separate rights issues.

The authorization is limited to Twitch DJ livestreaming and the applicable territory. It does not clear the same music for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Mixcloud, podcasts, downloads, club recordings, or other services.

The larger cost: what DJs give up
No VODs, Clips, or recordings containing catalog music
Twitch’s terms restrict participating DJs from creating or uploading VODs, Clips, highlights, or other recordings containing catalog tracks through Twitch. This can remove replay value, searchable long-tail content, viewer-created clips, and promotional excerpts from a DJ’s content strategy.
The precise issue is not simply that DJs cannot save streams: recordings containing catalog music are restricted under the program.
The agreement covers the whole channel
The opt-in applies to all streaming on the enrolled channel, not only streams placed in the DJ category. Twitch recommends that creators who DJ only part time consider using a separate DJ channel.
That matters to variety creators. A dedicated channel can keep gaming, talk, production, and other content on the main account outside the DJ channel’s program restrictions.
The stream must be a live performance
Twitch’s terms prohibit uses that make the broadcast function like an automated music service. Participating DJs may not:
- publish setlists ahead of a performance;
- immediately play audience requests;
- play a full album or substantially all of an album in one stream;
- play catalog tracks from only one artist in one stream;
- run audio-only or automated broadcasts;
- rebroadcast or simulcast concerts without permission; or
- play music videos or other third-party audiovisual content without permission.
In practical terms, Twitch is authorizing a live audiovisual DJ performance—not a radio station, playlist, album stream, or music-video channel.

Does joining prevent DMCA claims?
No. The program reduces risk for permitted uses of catalog tracks, but it is not blanket copyright immunity.
A DJ can still face enforcement for:
- playing an uncatalogued track;
- using music outside the program’s permitted format;
- including a catalog track that has become unavailable;
- posting a prohibited VOD, Clip, highlight, or upload;
- broadcasting music videos or concerts without permission; or
- using music in a territory where the relevant authorization does not apply.
Twitch also maintains a separate Music Reporting Process for certain participating rights holders and prohibited uses.
Geography and availability
The program and catalog are available only in territories designated by Twitch, and availability can change. Twitch’s published terms specifically exclude Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, South Korea, and Syria. The terms also allow Twitch to change or terminate the program.
Do not treat the program as worldwide. DJs should confirm their territory and current eligibility through Twitch’s DJ signup flow.
Should a DJ opt in?

A practical compliance workflow
- Confirm eligibility: Check the current territory and signup requirements at Twitch’s DJ signup page.
- Read the terms: Pay particular attention to Music Costs, channel-wide coverage, catalog rules, recordings, and opt-out provisions.
- Check every track: Review the DJ Catalog immediately before each set because rights can change.
- Keep written permissions: Store documentation for any music used outside the catalog.
- Use a live-performance format: Avoid automated, audio-only, album-length, single-artist, and music-video programming.
- Control recordings: Do not create VODs, Clips, highlights, or uploads containing catalog music.
- Separate channels if needed: Follow Twitch’s recommendation if DJing is only one part of the creator’s work.
- Review payouts: Compare net revenue before and after enrollment, while separating Music Costs from ordinary Twitch deductions.
- Clear rights before opting out: Leaving the program does not create permission to play recorded music; the DJ becomes responsible for obtaining the necessary rights.
Common misconceptions
“I bought the song, so I can stream it.”
Buying a track generally does not provide every public-performance, reproduction, synchronization, and online-streaming right needed for a Twitch broadcast.
“It is on Spotify, so it is cleared.”
Consumer streaming availability does not clear a track for a DJ livestream. The relevant question is whether it appears in Twitch’s current catalog or is separately authorized.

“Twitch takes 50%.”
This confuses Twitch’s stated cost-sharing arrangement with the amount deducted from a DJ’s revenue. No universal 50% deduction is published.
“The first year is free.”
The 100% subsidy announced for August 2024 was part of a temporary, declining transition program. It should not be presented as a current benefit without updated Twitch documentation.
Alternatives for creators who need replay-safe music
For background music, talk streams, gaming, and VOD-friendly content, Twitch lists services and libraries including Pretzel, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop Music, NCS, Outertone by RouteNote, and StreamBeats on its music-options page.

They may be better suited to creators who need cleared background music and recorded-content rights, while full-time DJs may value the DJ Program’s access to popular tracks despite its revenue and replay restrictions.
What remains unclear
Twitch’s public materials still do not establish one universal Music Costs rate, a public per-track payment, a label-by-label allocation, or a detailed formula covering every monetization source. The catalog, territory rules, and any subsidy can also change. DJs should rely on the current signup flow and legal terms rather than older launch coverage.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Twitch’s original plan became a live DJ Program. Monetizing participating DJs give up an undisclosed portion of channel revenue toward music-rights costs, while Twitch shares some of the expense. In exchange, DJs gain a structured way to livestream approved music—but accept strict catalog, recording, channel-wide, format, and territory limits.
