If your Microsoft 365 trial appears on account.microsoft.com/services and the button says Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off. The subscription is scheduled to expire on the date shown, so you do not need to cancel it again to prevent the next renewal.
If you see Cancel, or cannot find the trial at all, use the steps below to identify the billing provider, stop renewal, and preserve evidence if a charge has already posted.
First, identify the status shown on your account

Microsoft’s current trial guidance says a trial can be canceled within 30 days of signup without being charged, but promotional offers can have different terms. Check your welcome email and subscription page for the offer that applies to you: Microsoft’s free-trial instructions.

- Open https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account used to start the trial.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 listing and read its renewal or expiration information.
- Select Cancel or the relevant management link.
- Read the confirmation screen. If Microsoft offers to retain benefits or proceed with cancellation, choose the option that stops renewal.
- Save the confirmation page and any confirmation email.
- Return to Services & subscriptions and verify that an expiration date or Turn on recurring billing now appears.
Uninstalling Office, closing the browser, or removing a payment card does not establish that the subscription was canceled. The account status or a written confirmation must show that renewal is off.

If the trial is missing from Services & subscriptions

Microsoft explains these account and seller differences in its troubleshooting guidance. A trial activated during new-device setup may belong to a different personal account than the one used to sign in to Windows.
When Cancel is unavailable or the page errors
Visible subscription, but no cancellation control
- Confirm that the subscription is not already showing Turn on recurring billing or an expiration date.
- Check for an overdue balance. Microsoft says an outstanding amount may need to be paid before cancellation is allowed.
- Recheck whether Apple, Google, a retailer, or an organization is the actual billing provider.
- Review the account’s billing state and offer terms; labels can vary by region, plan, and account status.
Error messages, loops, or an unresponsive page
- Open the Services & subscriptions page in a private or incognito window.
- Sign out of every Microsoft account, then sign in again with the purchasing account.
- Try another current browser or device.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, pop-ups, or cookies.
- Capture screenshots of the subscription, error, dates, and account identifier.
- Use Microsoft’s official support route at https://support.microsoft.com/contactus.
Do not delete the Microsoft account or cancel a card as a first response. Those actions do not reliably end a subscription and can complicate access to receipts or support records.

If a Microsoft 365 charge has already appeared
Stopping future renewal and obtaining a refund are separate requests. Take these steps in order:

- Check the subscription end date and billing history.
- Turn off recurring billing immediately if it is still active.
- Submit a refund request through Microsoft’s refund process, or through Apple, Google, or the retailer if that seller processed the purchase.
- Keep the receipt, screenshots, cancellation confirmation, support case number, and dates of every contact.
Microsoft says refunds are not guaranteed and depend on the subscription and purchase circumstances. Its troubleshooting page also states that, under its process, cancellation must be made more than two days before the billing date to avoid certain charges; that is Microsoft’s stated timing guidance, not a universal legal deadline.
If a company continues charging after you canceled, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises following up in writing and asking your card issuer about its dispute process: FTC guidance on free trials and auto-renewals. Issuer procedures and deadlines vary, so treat this as general consumer information rather than individualized legal advice.
What changes after the trial ends
Office desktop applications
Canceling the subscription does not necessarily uninstall Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Microsoft says that after expiration, desktop Office may eventually show Unlicensed Product and enter View Only mode. You may still open and print documents, but editing and creating new documents through the desktop apps can be disabled.

OneDrive storage
Before canceling, check how much OneDrive storage you use and download or move files if your usage exceeds the free allowance. Microsoft says its subscription policy may allow deletion of OneDrive files after six months without the paid storage benefit; storage status, plan, and account circumstances matter, so treat this as a policy warning rather than an immediate deletion promise. Shared benefits
If the subscription owner shares benefits with family members, ending the subscription can affect their storage and other included services as well.

Free ways to keep working
Microsoft says users who see a Free badge at Microsoft365.com can use browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with 5 GB of OneDrive storage. These web apps do not include the full desktop feature set, offline capabilities, or every advanced Excel function.
If you need an installable, no-subscription suite, LibreOffice provides downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux at its official download page. It is not Microsoft Office, and formatting, collaboration, macros, cloud integration, and file compatibility can differ.
