For most people shopping in 2025, the Apple MacBook Air with the M4 chip was the safest default: quiet, light, fast enough for office multitasking, and equipped for video calls. The 13-inch model favored travel; the 15-inch model gave spreadsheet-heavy workers more room. It was not universal, however. Windows-only corporate software, ARM compatibility, touchscreen requirements, repairability and demanding development or creative workloads point to different choices.
This is a retrospective guide to laptops available in 2025. Apple’s store now lists M5 MacBook Air configurations in August 2026, so the recommendations below refer specifically to the 2025 M4 generation, not the newest current model. See Apple’s current buying page for today’s availability: Apple MacBook Air buying page.

Basic administrative work
Email, documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs and occasional calls need a responsive modern processor, 16GB of memory, a comfortable keyboard and a usable webcam. Paying for a discrete GPU is unnecessary.
#1 Best Overall
Heavy multitasking
Large spreadsheets, dozens of tabs, Slack or Teams, databases and frequent screen sharing justify 16GB as a minimum and 24GB or 32GB for longer ownership. A 15- or 16-inch screen can reduce dependence on an external monitor.
Creator and developer work
Photo, video and audio projects need faster sustained performance, more memory and at least a 1TB SSD when files are stored locally. Developers running containers, virtual machines, compilers or local databases should consider 32GB, strong cooling and Linux or virtualization compatibility.
Corporate and travel work
Corporate buyers must check VPN clients, endpoint security, device management, smart-card readers and Windows-only applications. Frequent travelers should weigh the laptop, charger, battery behavior during calls and durability rather than manufacturer web-browsing claims alone.
macOS or Windows?
Choose macOS when
- You value Apple-silicon efficiency, a strong trackpad, integrated speakers and microphones, and a quiet design.
- You already use an iPhone and want continuity features across Apple devices.
- Your required applications, VPN and peripherals have confirmed Mac support.
The M4 MacBook Air includes Touch ID, a three-microphone array with directional beamforming and voice-clarity features. Its specifications are listed by Apple at Apple’s M4 MacBook Air support page.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Choose Windows when
- Your employer requires Windows software, security agents or specialized peripherals.
- You need more screen sizes, ports, 2-in-1 designs, gaming support or easier access to CAD and legacy utilities.
- You prefer Intel or AMD compatibility and do not want to validate an ARM software stack.
Snapdragon models such as the Dell XPS 13 and Surface Laptop run Windows on ARM. RTINGS advises checking application compatibility before buying: RTINGS’ remote-work laptop guide. Confirm every VPN, driver, plugin, printer, scanner and device-management tool with your employer or vendor. If compatibility is uncertain, select an Intel- or AMD-based Windows model.
Best overall for most people: MacBook Air M4
13-inch MacBook Air M4
The 13-inch Air was the best portable default for writers, consultants, students, managers and travelers who did not need Windows-only software. At 2.7 pounds, it was easy to carry, and its fanless design, keyboard, trackpad and built-in audio suited ordinary work and calls. The 13-inch display can feel cramped for large spreadsheets or side-by-side documents.
Apple’s 13-inch specification page is here; the 2025 buying page is here. Memory and storage are selected at purchase and are not ordinary user upgrades.

The 15-inch version was the better choice for spreadsheet-heavy work and split-screen use without stepping up to a MacBook Pro. It weighed 3.3 pounds and offered a 15.3-inch-class display, six-speaker audio and a three-microphone array. Apple lists its ports as MagSafe, two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and a headphone jack. Full specifications are at Apple’s support page.
Rank #3
For either size, 16GB memory and 512GB storage were sensible starting points. Move to 24GB or 32GB memory, or 1TB storage, only when local media, development environments, large datasets or a long ownership period justify it.
Best Windows choices
Dell XPS 13 Snapdragon
The XPS 13 offered a thin, premium Windows design and efficient Snapdragon hardware. It was a good fit for users with a confirmed ARM-compatible software stack, not a blind default for corporate fleets. Check the exact configuration at Dell’s laptop page.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition
The Surface Laptop delivered a clean, conventional Windows experience with strong efficiency potential. Its Snapdragon platform creates the same compatibility obligation as the XPS 13. Microsoft’s product page is here.

The T14s was the safer conventional-business recommendation for managed fleets, heavy typists and buyers who prioritize keyboard quality, security, docking and business support. Intel and AMD versions, displays, cameras, batteries and memory arrangements differ substantially, so compare the exact SKU through Lenovo’s ThinkPad catalog.

Best for demanding professional work
Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7
The P1 Gen 7 suited developers, engineers, designers and analysts running virtual machines, CAD, simulations, GPU-accelerated applications or large datasets. Covered configurations offer discrete graphics, broad connectivity and replaceable RAM and SSDs. It is heavier, costlier and less battery-efficient than an ultraportable, making it excessive for email and video calls. RTINGS discusses it at its work-from-home comparison.
MacBook Pro 14-inch M4
The 14-inch MacBook Pro made sense when sustained performance, a better display or additional connectivity mattered. It was unnecessary for ordinary office work. TechRadar reported more than 18 hours in its own testing of the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro; that result is a device- and methodology-specific test, not a promise for every workload: TechRadar’s testing and recommendations.
Best repairable laptop: Framework Laptop 13
Framework’s Laptop 13 was the standout for owners who want replaceable parts, upgradeable components and swappable expansion-card ports. It favored technically comfortable, sustainability-minded buyers who plan to keep a laptop for years. The trade-off is more configuration responsibility and potentially less out-of-box refinement or battery life than a MacBook Air. See Framework’s product page and the RTINGS comparison.
Best convertible and Chromebook
Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14
Choose the Yoga 9i when handwriting, document annotation, presentations or tablet mode is central to the job. Touch hardware adds cost, weight and repair complexity. OLED models should be checked for flicker and reflections if you work long hours. RTINGS lists it among its remote-work alternatives at this guide.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714
The Chromebook Plus Spin 714 was appropriate for Google Workspace, browser applications, Android apps and light multitasking. ChromeOS does not provide the Windows or macOS desktop application ecosystem, so it is a poor fit for local engineering, advanced creative work, specialized corporate tools or Windows-only accounting software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Memory, storage and minimum specifications
- Memory: 8GB is only for very light use; choose 16GB for most workers and 24GB or 32GB for sustained multitasking, creative work, development or a five-year horizon.
- Storage: 256GB works for cloud-first users but is restrictive. Choose 512GB for a general laptop and 1TB or more for media, development environments or large local datasets.
- Camera and audio: Prefer a well-processed 1080p-class webcam, clear microphones and a camera position that can be raised to eye level. Resolution alone does not determine image quality.
- Connectivity: Require USB-C charging and a dependable external-display path. Wi-Fi 6E or newer is useful; Wi-Fi 7 also requires a compatible router, operating system and network hardware. Lenovo documents those requirements at its product information page.
- Return policy: Buy from a seller that lets you test your employer’s applications, VPN, peripherals and monitors before the return window closes.
Ports, cameras and the total desk
The MacBook Air’s two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, MagSafe and headphone jack are sufficient for a simple desk but can require a dock, HDMI adapter, USB-A adapter or card reader. Count the accessories as part of the purchase. A ThinkPad may be better value for a fixed desk with several legacy peripherals.
Frequent callers should evaluate dim-room image quality, microphone noise rejection, Zoom, Teams and Meet behavior, and camera placement. A monitor-mounted webcam, headset or USB microphone can improve calls more than moving from a midrange processor to a premium one.
How to compare battery claims
Manufacturer ratings, independent tests, video playback and wireless web tests are different measurements. Video calls, screen sharing, high brightness, external monitors and weak Wi-Fi reduce endurance. For context, RTINGS reports roughly 12 hours of light use for the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7, while TechRadar reported more than 18 hours for the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro in its own testing. Neither figure predicts a universal workday; compare methodology and workload.
