For a dedicated Android home-screen currency widget, start with ExchangeWidget. For travel conversions and offline use, Currency Converter Plus Live is the more versatile pick; for rate alerts and international transfers, consider Xe; for comparing transfer rates and fees, Wise; and for charts and trend alerts, Forex currency converter.
These apps do different jobs: some display reference exchange rates, while others also help move money. A rate shown in an app is not necessarily the rate your bank, card, ATM, or transfer provider will use. Spreads, fees, and other terms can change the final amount.

Which app should you choose?
- You want one or a few pairs visible without opening an app: ExchangeWidget.
- You travel and want a calculator, charts and an offline fallback: Currency Converter Plus Live.
- You want to watch a target rate and may send money: Xe.
- You want to compare what a transfer provider charges and what may arrive: Wise.
- You watch currency movements and want trend charts or sharp-move notifications: Forex currency converter.
1. ExchangeWidget: best dedicated Android currency widget
ExchangeWidget is the clearest choice if the widget itself matters more than a broad financial-services app. It can show up to three selected conversions on the home screen, with custom or preset amounts. Its green, yellow, and red freshness indicator helps distinguish a recently fetched rate from aging or stale data.

The listing says it supports more than 170 currencies as well as gold, silver, and platinum. It sources rates from the European Central Bank through frankfurter.dev, requires no account, and declares no personal data collected in its Google Play data-safety information. That declaration is the developer’s listing disclosure, not an independent privacy audit. A May 2026 update added cached rates for offline-first behavior and improved widget reliability on Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices; the listing also notes an ad-free paywall.
Choose it for: a lightweight, no-account glance at a few pairs, especially if you value a visible freshness cue. Skip it for: transfers, balances, payment cards, or transaction-linked alerts. Cached offline rates are useful as a reference, but they are not live quotes. Its smaller footprint also means its long-term support history is less established than that of the larger services.
2. Currency Converter Plus Live: best all-round travel converter
Currency Converter Plus Live combines a home-screen widget with multi-currency conversion, a calculator, historical charts, and offline exchange-rate support. The listing advertises 180+ currencies, cryptocurrencies, and precious metals; another section of the listing uses a different currency total, so treat the count as an advertised figure rather than a guarantee that every instrument has equally current data. Rates are described as powered by the developer’s AccuRate service.
For a traveler, the combination is practical: calculate a purchase, compare currencies, and refer to previously fetched rates when connectivity drops. Historical charts cover periods from about a week to five years. Offline conversion necessarily relies on stored information and can become stale, so refresh before relying on it.

The app contains ads and in-app purchases. Recent Google Play reviews report concerns about paid-feature limits, lifetime-purchase entitlements, and support responsiveness. Those are user reports, not independently verified findings; check the current listing and purchase terms before paying.
Choose it for: an everyday travel toolkit with a widget, charts, calculator, and offline fallback. Skip it for: money transfers, holding a balance, or a minimal ad-free experience.
3. Xe Money Transfer & Currency: best for rate alerts and transfers
Xe combines currency conversion and live-rate tracking with target-rate alerts, international transfers, and multi-currency features. Its listing advertises transfers to more than 190 countries in over 130 currencies, but route availability, balances, payout methods, limits, and fees depend on location, account eligibility, payment method, and transaction details.

The current evidence supports Xe’s tracking and alert features, but does not establish an Android home-screen widget. Check the app’s current listing or your installed version if a widget is essential. Choose it for: monitoring a pair and potentially sending money through the same service. Skip it for: a simple no-account home-screen glance.
4. Wise Currency Converter: best for comparing rates and fees
Wise Currency Converter tracks rates, lets you favorite currencies, and shows rate history for periods up to 500 days. Its listing also describes comparing providers and seeing exchange rates and fees before sending or converting. This makes it useful when the real question is not only “What is this amount worth?” but “What might this transfer cost?”
Keep the products distinct: the dedicated converter is an information and rate-comparison app, while transfers and multi-currency account features belong to Wise’s separate financial app. Features and availability vary by location, and estimates can change with route, funding method, verification, destination, and timing. The converter listing does not establish an Android home-screen widget; Wise’s separate website FX widget is not evidence of one.
Choose it for: rate history and a clearer comparison of provider costs before sending. Skip it for: an offline travel calculator, a dedicated home-screen widget, or trading analysis.

5. Forex currency converter: best for trends and market-style monitoring
Forex currency converter advertises minute-by-minute rate updates, a widget displaying a selected pair and trend, notifications for sharp movements, and charts covering periods from an hour to a year, with historical rates for previous years. It also advertises broad world-currency support and an unlimited portfolio. Its listing shows ads and no in-app purchases, and was updated April 22, 2026.
“Every minute” describes the developer’s stated refresh behavior, not guaranteed real-time execution data or a price at which you can trade. The listing alone does not establish the feed’s provenance or independent verification. Ads may also make it less appealing as a clean travel widget. Frequent refresh claims do not mean the app can bypass Android’s background and battery controls.
Choose it for: trend charts, a rate-and-trend widget, and movement notifications. Skip it for: sending money or a simple offline-first travel calculator.

What currency tracking can mean
- Conversion: “How much is 100 euros in U.S. dollars?”
- Tracking: “How has EUR/USD changed?”
- Alerts: “Notify me if USD/JPY reaches a target.”
- Transaction planning: “How much will my bank, card, ATM, or transfer provider actually charge?”
A converter can answer the first question and sometimes help with the second or third. Only a financial service can quote or execute its own transaction, and the resulting customer rate may differ from a reference rate. None of these apps should be treated as a substitute for a regulated trading platform, professional market-data terminal, or financial advice.

Reference rates, live updates and the amount you pay
“Live” is not a universal guarantee. An app may display market or reference data refreshed periodically, a provider’s customer rate, or a cached value last fetched earlier. ExchangeWidget’s freshness indicator is helpful precisely because a widget can show stored data when background updates are restricted. Currency Converter Plus Live’s offline mode is likewise a fallback, not a live feed.
Before trusting a number, check:
- Timestamp or freshness: When was the value last updated? Is it cached?
- Rate type: Is it a reference or mid-market rate, a buy/sell quote, or a provider-specific customer rate?
- Direction: USD/EUR and EUR/USD are reciprocal conversions, not the same quote.
- Costs: A bank or transfer provider may apply a spread and fee. Cards can add issuer or foreign-transaction charges; ATMs may add their own fee or offer dynamic currency conversion. Weekend or out-of-hours exchange fees may also depend on provider, plan, and market hours.
Use the final quote from the institution or service that will handle the transaction, including fees and the amount the recipient will get. Do not assume the converter’s displayed reference rate is executable.
Add a currency widget on Android
- Install the app from its Google Play listing and open it once.
- Select the currencies and amount you want to track.
- Long-press an empty area of the home screen and tap Widgets. The exact wording and placement varies by phone and launcher.
- Find the app’s widget, then long-press or drag it onto the home screen.
- Configure the pair, amount, size, and refresh options if offered.
- Refresh the app before relying on the displayed number, particularly before a purchase or transfer.
Widget availability and behavior can vary with Android version, launcher, manufacturer software, permissions, background-data settings, and battery optimization. Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Samsung, and other customized Android builds may impose additional background controls. ExchangeWidget specifically notes improvements for Xiaomi-family devices, but no app can promise identical behavior on every phone.
If the widget is blank or does not update
- Open the full app and try a manual refresh; confirm that the phone has internet access.
- Check Android’s battery and background-activity settings for restrictions on the app. Manufacturer menus may include autostart or similar controls.
- Remove the widget and add it again; then restart the launcher or phone and check for an app update.
- If the app is installed on an SD card and the widget fails to load, move it to internal storage.
- Consider an unchanged value cached rather than current, especially offline or when background refresh is restricted.
Alternatives: when a finance app may make sense
Revolut is a possible alternative for readers who want broader account, card, balance, and exchange features—not the default pick for a lightweight currency widget. Exchange fees can depend on plan, allowance, transaction timing, and market hours. Its U.S. help page describes examples for particular terms, but those are not universal: check the current fees and rate information for your own country, plan, and transaction rather than assuming Revolut is always cheapest.
For any app, a free download does not necessarily mean an ad-free experience or that every feature is free. Currency Converter Plus Live and Xe list ads; Currency Converter Plus Live also lists in-app purchases. ExchangeWidget’s listing notes an ad-free paywall, but its price and purchase terms should be checked in Google Play. Financial-service costs for Xe, Wise, or Revolut depend on the specific transaction and location.
